That's the thing, I tried teaching one kid at a time. Those three were sequential, that's why I burned my whole productive life on them. I guess there's a bit of a gap in understanding of expectations, and I kinda understand it because it's hard to explain it all with the in game chat. But my idea is that I take an apprentice who sticks close to me until he learns the craft, and then goes on to actually do that for the village for the rest of his life. And hopefully takes on an apprentice of his own to take over the shop when he passes. I think this master-apprentice relationship is the only way for long term stability of a community. The problem is, I can't explain all this in game, it's hard enough explaining the craft I'm teaching and I can actually demonstrate that. We need to somehow develop this apprenticeship culture in the game, but I'm not sure how, especially since the apprentices would by definition be newbies and unaware of lots of the game's culture.

I totally agree with and understand you here. I think that the apprenticeship culture should be encouraged and developed. For some people, I think they only need to learn of it. Unfortunately, though, there will always be people who just have different levels of involvement with the game. Those who immerse in the role play opportunities present within the game, such as the idea of families and interpersonal relationships (i.e. master and apprentice, mother and child, leader and follower, etc.) will quickly adopt the master-apprentice style of gameplay. But people who choose to play the game more casually without investing so much in the social aspect of the game probably won't get involved even if they know other people play that way.

I think the clothing item could work, certainly. At least in terms of designating who is in charge and who should be delegating work. I actually spawned into a community yesterday that sort of did something like that. Though, I think it was more due to scarcity. The leader of the community was fully clothed, he taught me how to farm and where the nearby resources were and things like that, then when he became close to death, he took off his clothes and said you are the leader now, take these. Other people did have clothes, but he (and in turn I) had the most of anyone, as it was my job to go out and make sure things were running smoothly and teach the next generation. Eventually as you get into a society where more and more people are fully clothed it seems necessary to add something to distinguish between players.

I also have been thinking that something as simple as signs could help solve the generational communication gap, if only for very specific things. A sign that says "SEEDS" next to a seeding row and one that says "FOOD" next to rows of produce intended for consumption, for example, could help cut down on veteran players having to check in on everything so frequently (though, like you said, they should do so every once in awhile). But that would also help new people who stumble into the camp (inhabited or otherwise) or newly born newbies to understand that there is a specific system in place that needs to be followed.

Totally agree, the most fun and the most successful playthroughs I have had so far have been spawning into groups who take the social/community/familial aspect of the game seriously. Honestly, it's kind of an emotional experience to have someone who taught you the ropes of how to farm and where to get the necessary resources for your group pass on their clothes and other items to you and bid you goodbye. That happened and then I passed the knowledge he taught me on to the next generation, and eventually passed the belongings that gramps gave to me on to the next generation, wished them good luck, said my goodbyes, and died.

Other groups I have joined have been bigger and had more things, but I have yet to join one where I had more fun or learned more about the game. I think it would be easier to cultivate a feeling of family or community if it were easier to chat in-game. Often times half the text is off the screen or players aren't always right next to each other. If there was some kind of a text box that made it easier to read full sentences or text cut off-screen, or even what players nearby but not on-screen at all are saying (though, not too far away, I would not want it to feel like conversing with a phone or telepathy, but rather shouting from a distance or something like that). Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Agreed, that is annoying that that happened to you. But don't stop teaching, those of us who are eager to learn rely on people like you. So thank you, keep passing on your knowledge, even if you choose to do so with a little more caution.

You could have a "spectator mode" that allows you to watch over the actions of one of your living descendents. That might give you a sense of continuity without breaking the spirit of the game.

I really like this idea and I was just thinking about how it would be interesting to see if any of the children that I had yesterday (had some good ones that seemed to really know what they were doing) were able to thrive and build anything of interest.

The generational aspect of this game is so fascinating to me, but I think it would be even more interesting if it were possible to see any of your legacy. But that should be observe-only, I think. Maybe even having personal statistics pages would be cool, if that were possible. That way you could just quickly go see, oh, that family line lasted X number of generations and contained Y number of people, etc. that kind of stuff. I don't think there should just be an option to spawn into your old community immediately. If you do it by chance, cool, but you shouldn't be able to just pick.

Communication is key, and as it is difficult in game, I think the forums can and should play a bigger role for player development and coordination. Furthermore, as the generational aspect of the game is one of the most important, generation-to-generation communication is also incredibly important, but not even possible in-game, beyond the 2 or 3 generations that exist simultaneously. A civilization may be extremely well run for the first and second, and hell maybe even a few subsequent generations, but what happens when someone slips up and someone who does not know the rules of sustainability (for example) spawns and depletes the resources necessary to survive. There are countless things that could happen. But with some form of cross-generational communication, even those who know nothing could be educated and learn without another player having to spend quite as much of their valuable time to explain that much information. I do wonder how this game will change as societies get more and more advanced. Who knows? Maybe there is already some sort of record-keeping feature within the game that just has not been unlocked yet. Until then, though, someone's got to find a way.

I think encouraging new players to check out the forum and the wiki are very helpful too. I am still quite new, and there are still many things that I have not been able to manage yet, successfully composting being one of them, but I have only played a handful of games so far, and each time I play I am trying out new things that I have read on the wiki or on here. The more people that come into the game with at least a little bit of basic knowledge like how to make baskets and start farming, etc. the better off everyone will be. Often times, due to the speed of the game, it can be difficult to explain things to people, even if you really wanted to. There is just not enough time to do that and then also do what needs to be done.

MfG,
Alex
