But for the other hand I would be fine with such consequences, it's their fault they died out, "next time do better so you won't lose the town".

So yeah, I would still prefer towns dying out together with their families.

this will fill the map with abandoned white villages

Unlike geys and slinkies (both had the best towns on the map), whites are still alive. They have engine pump and kerosene. Don't underestimate them.

My theory is that you got it the other way around. Gay and Slinky family died out because they developed way faster than Whites and Gingers. I was trading 4/6 buckets of latex per run with the Slinkies while Gold familiy had at most 3/5 people in total and 2 rubber tires. I managed to share two rounds of oiled and sulfured latex with them. At the same time Browns and Blacks had at the very least 10/12 people in each camp. At some point they all got oil but people got bored of the developed camps because they already had it all, so they started siding to be born elsewhere. I would love to see a sid time plot per family because for me the reason families die out is lack of people and not water or food. The second south west camp of the Gays even had enough water to keep it going. So it´s not that families die because they did bad or poorly, they just didn´t have enough content to make people live in their town permanently.

#207 Re: Main Forum » My worries with the homesick update » 2020-03-11 21:07:05

Slinky, I believe ohol is a metagame, a game about a game. Each new update Jason comes with a new riddle everyone has to solve in order to play. It´s a new puzzle every week or so to keep the oldies interested, because they get bored of solving the game over and over again. They want the survival challenge: ditch parenting and civilization building. You can see them around in the forum talking about "challenge" and "pressure".  Rich dynamics mean conflict and struggle, everything you described is expected to happen and a desirable part of the game at this point. They are licking their chops to see how this turns out.

Food hasn't needed the invisible food bonus for literally forever.

Oil is getting nerfed because one rig was producing so much water that one rig was worth 46.2 cisterns worth of water. Do you not see the problem with a single rig producing that much water?

I don´t usually follow Spoonwoods train of thought, but in this case the amount of water produced per oil is in my opinion not the problem.

If we expect a town to develop any sensible way of actual civilization (just as the premise of the game) we have to expect a water and resources surplus and not the other way around. Big cities and empires benefited in some way or another from resource abundance and not from scarcity. Given that oil is a) Region limited and scarce b)Hard to find and c)Non renewable i´d say there is no problem with that much water.

Of course you only argue about a number because a small group of people think the game is "not challenging" if there is no scarcity. In this sense this game has progressibely abandon its premise from civilization building to surviving. I you truly believe in the premise about civilization then you should recheck the numbers:

Shallow well 1.3 cistern average
Deep well 3.3 cisterns average
Newcomen pump 12.3 cisterns average.

Do you follow the patern? Every step is about 3 to 4 times the step before. That is obviously related to the needs of a growing town.

Now we are facing a drop from 46 to 26 cisterns worth of value in water from an oil rig.
Why? Because people like you find it boring and unchallenging when theres too much water and nothing else to do.

I say the problem is in the second part of my last sentence: there is nothing else to do, meaning exaclty what everyone has been telling from six months ago: WE NEED CONTENT.

If we had a nice way to use the water in construction, crafting, art, cooking and others there would be nobody bored about too much water. If we had a decent alternative to use kerosene (cars and planes are laughable) then we would have an actual choice in terms of water or "something else". But no, nerfing water is the best way to keep everyone on their toes and doing something before they note we haven´t had a tech improvement since a year or so.
Seriously, I love Jasons latest attempts to fix old stuff but this is a big dump on everything.

Do you really think nerfing food bonus and dropping about 50% water from the oil rig is "boiling the frog"?

The is one of the problems with the drastic changes Jason likes to make to his games.
Something he just doesn't understand as a game designer.
People invest their time into making guides and strategies, coming up with collective ideas as to how to overcome the hurdles of existing dynamics.
WE, do that part, and WE become closer as a group for doing them together.

To just go and overhaul THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME just because people overcome one of those hurdles, doesn't just present a new challenge for people to overcome, it's hurts the formation and cohesion of the existing community that bonds overcoming those previous hurdles, who did so for the sake of people yet to come.

This guide, and so many guides that others players have made, have become near meaningless to the present state of the game.

I get why he changed the temp system, I get why he changed the pond and well systems (TIME AFTER TIME AGAIN) but what he needs to get is other people.

If he is going to make a game where people want to be together and care for each other, anything he does to hurt that, is going to hurt the game and it's ultimately going to hurt us as people, who would have prospered from the bonds we'd have continued forming as a community, INCLUDING HIM and his reputation as a game designer.

I mean, there are a lot of game designers out there that their community will do everything short of dying for, whereas the people who once cared for and trusted Jason, have left him. But at least he has 4 people in his life that mean more to him than anyone else in the world, right? I mean, that is a big thing, obviously, for any human being, to have REAL people in your life, and not just some NOT REAL people on the internet.

I'm sure if Jason had to solve the trolley problem, with his, what is it now? Something like 70,000 people that have bought One Hour One Life, on one track, and his wife and 3 kids on the other, he would, no questions asked, kill all 70,000 of us, for the sake of his family.

I think that is how little, he cares about everyone else in the world, at this point.

So, now this forum should become a lesson, for any future game developers that plan to put their work out for the public, to make and enjoy as a community.
You make a promise, you better damn well keep it.
Don't say you're going to make a game about parenting, and then just leave it about oil and murder for 6 months.
I'm sure it's hard for Jason to separate oil from parenting, when that's basically what he's told us his mother and father did just to afford him the luxury of being able to sit his big dopey ass in front a PC for long enough that he could figure out how to make a machine add 2 and 2 together, but there is a obviously more to life than fucking oil.

What? They are super cool. The first one is a little out of proportion but it is still nice (they look a little short for adults). The second one is amazing, I love the details, you also nailed all the tattoos in the game. The last one is nice, you need to smile more!

#215 Re: Main Forum » The Chemistry in OHOL, Volume 1 » 2020-03-04 12:40:03

It would be cool if you could put them in crafting order, since there is a linear path.

  • Niter - KNO3 + Water, Paper and Ashes

  • Saltpeter Solution - KNO3 H2O + Sulfur

  • Sulfur trioxide - SO3+ Hot Coals and Water

  • Sulfuric Acid - H2SO4 + Copper foil

  • Copper Sulfate - CuSO4 + Niter, Alum and Hot Coals

  • Nitric Acid - HNO3+ Electrum Ingot

  • Silver Nitrate - AgNO3

The only things that go "separated" are:

Malachite + forged with Charcoal in a Sealed Crucible-> Copper Ingot + Newcomen Hammer -> Copper Foil
Electrum Ore + forged in a Sealed Crucible -> Electrum Ingot.

Out of all those in the main list the only products that can be used outside this path are:
Sulfuric acid  and Copper Sulfate for Daniell Cells
Silver Nitrate for Photo Paper.

Let me ask a question about the game.. um... why are, they called, German, Shepherds?

It is a little known fact that the first the first dog was crafted by Eve VonStephanitz  to assist in the herding of Germans, an important activity in early village life.   Unfortunately, griefers abused this feature to cause havoc, over-producing dogs and herding the Germans to near extinction.     Eventually Jason was forced to severely nerf all dogs and completely remove Germans from the game to restore balance.

So that's why dogs appear to have no purpose in OHOL and why they are the only domestic animal that dies of old age.    And, of course, that's why German Shepherds are called German Shepherds.

Marry me.

The community hasn´t really changed for months in terms of functionality. I´d say it is amazing that people still take time to add up to the game.

Booklat1 wrote:

I think there is so much that we should get revisited, so many features that got rushed over and that we keep trying to redesign for Jason intead of just saying "hey jason, i really dont like this".

But really, sometimes a mechanic is just bad or poorly designed (hierarchy system took about 2 weeks of development and adds like zero value to the game). Toolslots are not a bad idea in itself but restricting to 6 tools is too much and the link to the leaderboard is pathetic, may as well run a dice before the game to tell me how many tools can I use. A ranking with an almost random outcome adds or takes 2 toolslots. Thats it.

Booklat1 wrote:

personally I'd love to see racial specialization completely removed and tool slots expanded to fill that design void of family specialties but this isnt the point, the point (to me) is racial specialization sucks enormously and I haven't had joy with this game ever since it was added.

And this has been largely talked about, racial specialization just dumbs down everyone instead of giving an incentive to cooperate. We don´t get a bonus for playing in our special bio, we get cut from everything else. Thats just nonsense, and given the amount of content that needs mixed resources it is pretty much the cause of everyone getting in the same town.

Bottomline I completely disagree with your opening. There are at least 4/5 threads of people saying the same thing as you do. At this point if you like racial specialization you are either a masochist or someone that doesn´t really play the game *.

For me the problem behind all the latests updates and "ideas" is the lack of design. OHOL is not a survival game once you get to rubber which it just depends on the races playing at this point. It is clearly not pvp and not a farming simulator. It hardly qualifies as a parenting game because clicking on someone 10 times in 3 minutes and saying "you are booklat" is not really parenting. It is not civilization building because the amount of content doesn´t allow to develop customs or anything related to civilization. A few optional buildings and a farm is not a village, they are all the same. Is it a crafting game? Well, we are just being told it is not and it won´t ever be.

The last wave of new players is just fading away after the steam sale. Most of them just played a few times and didn´t even get to make a steel tool. When they tried to explore the game outside of town they just didn´t even understand that they couldn´t carry stuff everywhere. They had to deal with us (old timers) telling them what not to do instead of teaching them because teaching is expensive (toolslots and time). They had to deal with people yelling them gibberish and cursing them out of nowhere. They could stay next to a berry farm to not "lose". But it was boring. So they left.

#219 Re: Main Forum » Worktable » 2020-02-28 06:26:34

Sounds like a nice idea, you could store stuff on containers (baskets) and swap around yourself instead of having to click and move all around.
Example, baskets with clay around and a stone on the table: swap clay and make several bowls swapping around the clay.

However, i think it is unlikely to get made because of the amount of reversed transitions and the work it needs.

#220 Re: Main Forum » Family professions. » 2020-02-26 18:55:08

Now that is "if" there was a cart to collect the branches and a knife around that I can take and if there is fire in my town. If not, I already have to start begging for someone to make a cart, someone to smith a blade and someone to make the fire or give up my intention to make paper and do one of those things.

jasonrohrer wrote:

But if you already know the stuff yourself, why would you want your baby to learn the same thing?

You probably want your baby to spend slots learning the stuff you don't know yourself, to complement (not overlap) your own tool set.

Because some jobs and tasks are best suited to work on them individually and no by a group of people. The idea that we do everything complementing eachother is not reasonable. Lets say paper. I need to learn coals and knife. I will also probably need some kindling and pencil, unless I want to go around begging for someone to chop wood. Then I´m left with 2 toolslots and can´t barely do anything else in my life.

You would probably need to have more tools for each profession, because 3 is quite a small number if that is the total amount of tools you’re gonna be able to use for an entire life. And how would Eve work, since she (and probably her kids too) will need to learn quite a few early tools, that don’t necessarily fit into a logical profession. And especially not with only 3 tool slots. Also there should probably be professions that you could have as secondary professions instead having it be your one and only profession. Example of this would be the Medic profession. That sounds like the most boring profession in the world if you won’t be able to do anything else.

Outside of that I like the main idea of it, since I myself suggested something similar some time back.

But sigmen I see the idea not as a "full setskill" but as a "basic tools for...". Lets say you are a carpenter, and you are making or expanding a pen on your lifetime. You need to learn stakes/adze/shovel/mallet anyways. When your child is born he/she gets the basics stakes/adze/mallet *for free* and still gets to learn whatever may need to complete this or any other job. I don´t see why you would need four or more toolslots since the focus is not on what makes you "carpenter" but in the inheritance.

Virtually nobody understands how or why curses work and they just abuse the mechanic. It leads to bad players cursing good ones more often than not. The curse system as a whole is clearly broken.

I have 1000 hours played of the game and I have never once landed myself in donkey town, and can barely remember the last time I was cursed. Consider that people maybe just don’t like playing with you.
