Using the genetic fitness to select a new default leader once the old one died may be a better way to select an experienced player then simply using the age.
Additionally one could loose some genetic fitness for murdering the own family. the closer the murdered the more fitness loose
Both together would lead to murderers not being selected as leaders
Here in the suggestion reddit:

And here a suggestion to more advance "karma" system then the current genetic system: (thats an early draft and needs some thoughts)

UPDATE: after seeing how naive people are, i would also suggest, that you are only allowed to follow people with a high genetic score or yourself.
Thoughts to Posses
Currently i see the main issue with griefer squads that the posse system makes them faster than their victims, so they can easily kill them.
also it makes it harder to defend against a posse, since you dont have much time to organize a defense. so the current posse system is kind of quite deadly.
Currently there are the following ways to defend against attackers:
1. Take what you can and run away until the attackers are gone
- the current posse system makes this more hard then needed through making the posse faster then the victim
- often the attack is recognized too late, here a better warning system and or "instinct" based automatic run away mechanism could help (of course a player could cancel it)
- if the attackers would be made slower then the victims, there would be a good chance that most of the victims could escape, still the attackers could harm the resources of the village, but i guess thats war.
2. Take what you can and hide inside a building / behind fences (kind of siege)
- this is quite similiar to 1) but with the following differences:
- currently doors dont block outsiders by default. treating doors equally to fence gates could help
- The passage right of doors could follow the leadership, this would also protect against an exiled one
- walls could be similar to fences
- removing walls and fences could be hard work
- majority leaders could be allowed to remove fences / walls / doors / gates.
3. organize and form a defence
- also here better warnings and ability to run away could hep to give more time to organize a defense
- removing posses altogether could help, since then there is no need to organize much and people can go into one on one group combat
- adding better defense mechanisms like in 2. could help
Here a full version to a simple yet effective alternative to the current posse system:

Perhaps genetic fitness should be observable to other players. This way experienced players will have easier time persuading others to follow them.

i guess most will so or so follow the default leader, so most would follow the experienced players by default.
also in midlife you can also see good potential leaders already, but most wont most-likely take the effort to change who they follow

You don't need most to change who they follow, only their leaders.
