I noticed a bug in the code that caused a crash earlier tonight.
The bug is fixed, but I'd better roll out the fix to all the servers, otherwise, the crash could strike when you least expect it this weekend and really ruin a bunch of people's games.

Could make the server restart mechanic so that as soon as you make the server restart it kicks all players and in the client a message appears "waiting for server restart", than as soon as the servers are online again the client reconnects and the player gets back to the exact same life they had (same age, same character, same position)

Problem with that is that like half the people would bail, and then you have a bunch of zombie people standing around with no one controlling them.

Out of curiosity, I was wondering it if it would be possible to provide a visual sign when someone has lost connection with the server - due to logging out or internet issues. I play SS13 and in that game, when someone disconnects, their body remains alive and in the game, just like in OHOL. However, there is a visual indicator (cartoon Zzz's and a description that indicates they have "space sleep disorder") for other players so they can recognize them and know that they are unable to respond. When in the state, your body does not experience hunger, so you will not die, unless you are injured. If you reconnect, you can go back to playing the game.
I think it would be a good change if disconnected players showed some kind of emote - maybe closed eyes, sleeping face or something - so family can tell that they are not "at home" right now. No hunger drain, but they still age and die after their sixty years are up. So if you get disconnected and it takes you longer than a few minutes to get back on, you won't be dead of starvation. And your family doesn't have to stick around feeding you.
Lastly, for purposes of genetic score, only count the amount of time/years they spent AWAKE. So if they disconnect at 15 years old and never come back, that is the same as dying at fifteen. If they disconnect at fifteen and come back at forty five years old and die at sixty years old .. that life counts as having died at thirty, since they only stayed connected for thirty minutes of play.
Not only would this provide a nice quality of life bonus for players - sometimes I really need to take a poop break. But it would also close the loop on an annoying "exploit" to farm genetic score off comatose family members.

+1 to destinys idea

When i restart my local server it takes 2 seconds, idk maybe it takes longer with the public servers. But i think as long as it takes less than 15 seconds most people will stay.
Even if half of them became zombies i would still prefer this system over the current one, but it was just an idea, its not so important.

The update process takes so long because people are living out hopeless lives. I think a quick boot and restart and update would really help the process. Maybe give them a 5 minute window, no hunger lost, no age progressed. After that 5 minutes is up though they will die without reconnecting.
I think it would be a lot better than confusion "why am I getting no babies" and ending lineages.
I'm Slinky and I hate it here.
I also /blush.

Destiny's idea is perfect, I love that idea. The last life I've played there were 5 AFK people (including my mother) and people become hospice workers rather than actually having any enriching life of their own. We should also be able to move these people somehow, since they are usually in front of an oven.
I'm fish, deal with it or don't, idgaf
