Cursing - how does it work?

In game an old guy started chasing me with a knife, so I cursed him.
And indeed his text changed to black.
I went to another town and there were two people with black text (and nice names).
Only I didn't curse them unless I used to.
What's worse, everyone also saw that I had black text.
Of course, I play long enough that I collected some cursings, but certainly no one cursed me after the last amendment.
Is this another mistake - something like - you curse - you become cursed to everyone?

Re: Cursing - how does it work?

It is.   But it is counting any active curses accumulated prior to the update.   So if you have cursed anyone in the last thirty days, they will show up as black text to you right now.   And if YOU have been cursed by anyone in the last 30 days, they will see your text as black.

The system is new, so glitches are possible, but it sounds to me like everything is working as intended.   You would expect to potentially encounter cursed people when you visit a new town, since your curse means they must be born far away from you.    And you can expect to encounter some people who cursed you to stay away when you arrive in a distant town.   After all, you were born far away from them, possibly for a reason.

It is something to consider as a traveler.   Best to keep a clean record, so you don't get a cold welcome at the next town over.

Re: Cursing - how does it work?

It's impossible (almost certainly).
Very rarely, I was cursed, and usually the grief cursed me, and I cursed him.
That would mean it was a city of griefs.
But ... why only two people had black text for me?
I think it's a mistake though.
And one more thing - the old guy didn't get any name after the curse.

Re: Cursing - how does it work?

You see black text when you curse someone. When you curse someone they cant be born to you and you cant be born to them HOWEVER, you can be born to other moms around someone you curse which is why you seen older black text people.

How many people reported seeing your text as black?   I doubt everyone could, unless you have more enemies than you realize.

...

Just because they see your text as black, that does not mean you will see their text as black.   Cursing is unilateral.

...

The "name" isn't really a name.   It is a random two word phrase that the cursed player will occassionally mutter.  Only you can see them say it and they do not say it all the time.   It was added to allow you to detect black speech, even if the cursed player remains silent.

This was an issue when Jason previously tried to implant black speech as a way to identify cursed players.   People who got cursed a lot would simply avoid speaking so they wouldn't give themselves away.    Of course this had the predictable result that a lot of quiet people ended up killed or cursed for refusing to speak.

It also serves as a way to identify individual cursed  players, since each person will mutter a unique phrase.   So if you encounter someone you cursed in a past life, you can choose to watch and wait, rather than attack on sight.   If they behave themselves, they might be okay and can be tolerated with caution.   If they grief again, you can recognize them in future lives by listening for their cursed words and warn others of the danger or act preemptively.  It is a smart feature, because it selectively removes anonymity ... one of the griefer's strongest weapons.

Re: Cursing - how does it work?

How many people?
5- 6.
I didn't ask everyone in town.
And I understand how it works, but as I said - I even curse griefs rarely and usually when they curse me.
But a few people - it is possible.
I also saw how "names" work - these two had very poetic names - "gold harp" and "mercy brute".
Sweet right?
However, this means that it will be possible to identify the grief only when we meet him three times - we curse someone in one life, in the next he gets a name and in the third we know that someone is, e.g. a murderer.

Ok thank you all for the answers.

Re: Cursing - how does it work?

I cursed a couple people today. They immediately receive their cursed name.
