Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

This bug was reported, but so far, I can't reproduce it:

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/issues/479

In my tests, the cart (or whatever item) is always dropped outside the bad biome when I step into it.

Can anyone find specific steps that trigger this situation?

To test in a low-risk way, you can do it with any held item (not just carts), like pine needles or whatever.

Please add a comment to issue 479 if you find anything.

This never happened to me. But its possible to drop your weapon in a hostile biom when in kill debuff.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Make a good tile inside a bad biome, walk there over the bad tiles while holding an item, click another bad tile while walking over a bad tile?

The idea is to change direction while walking over a bad tile.

Any chance you would consider loosening biome restrictions?

The dropsy mechanic is confusing to new players and very frustrating for everyone.    I want to be able to touch penguins again.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Seriously just get rid of it. We already can't interact with biome specific items when we're on floor tiles in the biomes anyways. It's the most annoying thing in the entire world when I'm just trying to carry my cart home and I have to take 2 min detours around biomes.

Then we also can't pick up our children in the biomes. They can't move for 5 seconds anyways, and then they have to walk to the edge to be fed. It's horrible. I've had so many kids just /die because we're in a hostile biome.

Unfortunately I couldn't trigger it myself either. I know multiple people have had it happen but I haven't a clue what causes it to plop in there instead of going where its supposed to.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Wondering if the mod clients are messing this up.

The official client has code in place that prevents you from stepping in a bad biome by accident.  This is NOT enforced server-side, but only through the client.

You cannot "click across" the bad biome, and the client auto-routes you around it.  If there's no way around it, you will not step in automatically.  You will walk right to the edge, and the only way to step in is to click directly in the bad biome on purpose.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

I use hetuw mod and the rerouting thing is the same when I click. If I use WASD tho it ignores this.

The rerouting is super usefull makes navigating around the biom very easy

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

One of the people I play with in low pop streamed today.  She was worried about streaming, on the chance that it would attract more than 14 people to the low pop server we tend to play on, and we would have biome restrictions to worry about.  I don't doubt that other people than myself just won't play with biome restrictions on bs2.  Wolvenscar, a longtime streamer who has streamed less frequently lately, remarked early on that traveling wasn't fun anymore on bs2, because of the dropsy.

Twisted also said that on stream today that the race restrictions have a rather poor effect.  Specifically, now there's a reason to prefer OTHER people's children than your own, which is the opposite of preferring your children over other people's children for strategic gameplay reasons.  He said that you can have more children of your own, but if there's some child not of your race, that child has special value, because that child can travel to a biome that you can't.  If I've misinterpreted what Twisted said or what he mean, I think he can correct my error(s).

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

I'll never forget being with a smallish tan fam and two of us showing up to a big dead town that was connected by road to ours. We looked around, eventually found a jungle and almost everyTHING conceivable had been moved there, (Steel/Iron/tools/bps/clothes/pies etc) so any other fam couldn't get to it and my tan friend had to get everything out and carry it on a north road back to the town. I can't remember if the town had survivors or other travellers that saw what happened.
it was downright ridiculous. That shouldn't have been able to happen.

There is a way to force-drop things in bad biomes using a horse cart, I reported it today.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

On a side note:

A few weeks ago I was dropping flint chips in a jungle biome to "herd" mosquitoes to one corner. I was holding an ax and accidentally hit the space-bar using hetuw mod which drops whatever you are holding. I was in an area surrounded with flint on the ground and no open spaces near. The ax just vanished. Did search to check if it just was moved further away. Nope, just gone.

I saw this happen this past weekend. I was a baby traveling with two adults. One adult was carrying me and another was carrying a glass bottle with something bright inside. When the 2nd adult carrying the bottle walked diagonally across a corner of Arctic Biome, the bottle was dropped into the snow so we had to leave it.

The only thing I did notice is that she was walking diagonally, traveling from northeast to south west. This will be horrible but I'll try to draw a map with text so you can picture the map layout. I believe the start and end points were Mountain and she crossed a single snow tile. I'm not 100% about which tile she ended on because it happened pretty fast but this might help you with trying to reproduce it on a similar corner.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

For anyone that missed it, here's the video of me reproducing the bug:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN6kLVLoy18

It took me about three minutes to do. The earlier part of the video can be valuable, but if you just want to see the bug I recommend watching from 2:38 onwards.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Happened to me also, by accident.  I was also moving southwest.  I believe I was click-hold-ing the bottom edge of the screen to start running.  There were items around most of the jungle peninsula.

(I'm sorry, I don't know how to add the image, I added to the Github issue #479)

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Yesterday I was moving between a pine tree (south) and a bit of desert (north) diagonally when I dropped the cart by accident. The tree pushed it into the desert and I couldn't retrieve it. I'm not sure why I was even allowed to drop the cart in that space, but I was. I came back later with a black skin person and was able to pick up the cart normally.

You can't walk over to a good tile in a bad biome without clicking the bad tiles. Your character will always try to go around it, and if there's no way to get over there, you'll have to forceclick them through the bad tiles.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

One solution could be to just let us at least interact with stuff in a special biome tiles that border neutral tiles.

Or remove biome restrictions and re-work biome specializations into something that doesn't involve the "dropsy" mechanic.

That would be nice too.

Re: Any way to force-drop something in a bad biome?

Had the bug happen to me while I was non-ginger. I was walking on a snow floor and was curious about losing a rubber tire and/or leaving it for gingers at the oil rig. I don't know how but something related to the cart I was using made the tire drop next to the snow floor so I could not retrieve it.

We should be able to use fishing poles to snag items out of biomes we can't pick up from!
