*Suggestion* Horses don't run away if within X tiles of a player

Jason

I lot of people have raised concern that it's very annoying and not fun for your horse to take off like a spaz after only a few seconds left unmounted. This is also a problem because sometimes when a player is experiencing a little lag, it can be IMPOSSIBLE to mount your horse.

I propose that when the horse's countdown to "go wild" reaches zero, the game makes a quick check to see if a player is nearby. It could be five tiles, or three or whatever. If a player is near, the horse stays and it's count resets as if it was just dismounted. If no player is near (or even just the last player to ride it), then it begins to freak out like it currently does. I'm sure there are other ways you can code this too. Anyway and whatever is easiest I'm sure is fine.

It doesn't make sense for a tamed horse to just run off like crazy when it's rider is standing right there next to it, and as I mentioned, lag can make it so you can't even get on the horse. That's the most important reason to implement this. Thank you.

Maybe white people should gain the "horse whisperer" super-power.   Not only can they speak any human language, they also be understood by animals.

If you are vanilla, your horse will never flee.

Horses eat grass and poop a lot. They should stand still and make poop, and only run if some kind of threat like a wolf or bear appears.
Grass paths chewed and run upon by horsies?

The suggestion without some serious Engine changes isn't actually able to be done.

That's something I don't think we'll see Jason do.

However, Jason has had the ability to set the various Horse-cart Transitions that cause the movement to Chase the player, rather than running in random directions. Unless he changes that, this is probably intentional to make them 'annoying' to deal with vs. using a Car or ordinary Cart.

Or he could just double the wait time and cut the flee distance by half.   Lazy horses!

ohol sure is a simply designed game, and with that simplicity comes a lot of elegance and a lot of repeated UI inputs.
horse-ai sure is extremely basic, to a point where latency makes horseriding often (almost) impossible.

how about a PASSIVE general purpose leash, that restricts a leashed clients movement and has them follow the leasher on the most recently stood tile, not just active leashes for baby animals.
To put leashes on horses, sleighs, babies, spouses, and most importantly on BEARS!

As we have saddles, how about adding blinders (or blinkers, if you prefer) to the game?  Horses with blinders don't see you, thus they don't get spooked and as a result don't run away.

Horse blinkers are so people can tell if you're turning left or right on your horse.
