Veganism is only relevant in the context of late stage capitalism and the mass exploitation of animals.
Assuming that as true, one might say that in the later stages of human evolution before they left Earth, veganism became more relevant. So, it's possible that in a later stage of human evolution, veganism would remain relevant. Since the game has an 'evolve or die' philosophy, maybe having a vegan alternative might even make more sense.

A tribe of ethical vegans could live in pine wall houses, dress in reed skirts, and make fire. Their diet would be primarily wild gooseberries, supplemented by carrot pies, and three sister stew. I think they would be able to survive just fine. They wouldn't use much water, so they can gather it from ponds. Most of the tech tree is locked behind animal parts, so they have no use for iron tools or fancy gadgets.
Don't know if you knew, ponds take a week to refill now. But your idea is something. Also, fire isn't needed for heating inside a fully floored pine wall building with shut doors. Oh, you probably mean for cooking stew pots, bean burritos, and whatever else seems good to cook. Lighting the oven might be more difficult, since it would be two kindling to light the oven, instead of kindling in the oven and using the main fire.
Food decay would solve this problem. Kill the rabbit, skin it, and leave it to rot down to bones. But ethical vegans are hard-locked from advancing out of the stone age, because rabbit hide is required for bellows. You can't progress up the tech-tree with clean hands. Simulated animal cruelty and parts collection is required.
At best, you could let someone else do the dirty work, but that does not remove the moral obligation. You are still benefiting from unethical actions.
Exactly.

I mean no civilization have ever sprung up from veganism.
True. But, the OHOL world is in the future not the past. The OHOL world has enough weird things in it, so I think it could be plausible to believe that civilization could spring up with a vegan ethic.

Yeah, the slow refill is a problem. But you will have lots of time on your hands, and not many options for water OR soil. Keep in mind that domestic sheep would not be an option in a vegan village either. No sheep = no compost. You will want to look for natural soil deposits close to ponds for farming purposes. You might want to build roads or mark paths to help people find the water. Or just travel to a new spot and build a new pine house when you arrive. A semi-nomadic lifestyle would probably be the simplest approach to the problem, long-term. Not only does it allow you to gain easy access to fresh ponds, but it also gives you more options regarding wild milkweed and vegan-friendly wild foods.
Also, I don't think a vegan village would want to keep a main fire going indefinitely. Without a forge, you don't have steel. Without steel, you don't have an axe. Without an axe, you can't harvest firewood. So all fires would need to use kindling and burn out quickly. I think it would be more resource efficient to wait until you have a specific need for a fire or hot coals before making one. You also would have fewer reasons to start fires, since you wouldn't be using a forge or making meat pies on a regular basis. Fire would be useful for making pottery, cooking stew, baking bread and a few other things. You would want to making carrot pie, but should avoid make berry pies or berry carrot pies, except maybe for the yum bonus. The individual ingredients can feed more people that the berry pie itself.

Sigmen,
Here's Jason in another thread:
Because such things will create interesting and varied stories. There are already lots of interesting life stories coming out of the game, and I'm extremely proud of that fact, and I love those stories. But I want MORE. I want to turn that crazy/interesting story knob until it twists all the way off. I want no two lives to ever be the same. Not even a little bit the same. Not even similar.
... One more type of story.

My response to Gogo at least suggests some potential here in more types of stories with some development in this direction. Hunting and eating the rabbit is one story, but it's the same old story over and over again. The runner baby making bones that were useful is another story. The griefer dying whose bones got used is another. Yes, I don't want a part of it, but the family engaging in a human sacrifice is another. The family that found bones is another. The new player dying early is another. The experienced player running into a tree boar is another. Some of those stories already exist in the game. But, they might just have more of a pronounced effect instead of just seeming like another senseless death.

It's so easy to forget how things happen from the ground up, isn't it? No bread without a knife, no knife without an oiled file blank, and currently no oiled file blank without a dead goose, and no steel file blank without bellows.
