There's another update in progress. Here are three lineages which will soon die off due to the update. Under current game mechanics, they never had a chance at eternal survival, so long as an update was coming.

It seems Wassers were alive 6 minutes ago.
The update doesn't really kill people by itself, right? It doesn't take very long to update and log in back.
Maybe it would help to temporarily stop food pips being depleted before and after the update. And/or show a splash screen explaining that you'll be able to log back in and continue playing real soon.

Yes, no one gets killed by an update.
However, a server has to be empty before the update applies to it. Also, during the update process, people are locked out of joining servers that will get updated when they become empty (the lockout first applies to the the odd numbered servers then the even numbered servers, if I recall correctly). An update does kill lineages all by itself. If you somehow still think otherwise, then explain to me, how can a lineage have a child when no children can get born?

That won't solve the problem of lineages not having the possibility of eternal survival because of an update. Were it the case that there existed some way that someone could appear as a woman under the same family tree either by choice (perhaps by saying something like MY FAMILY IS BOOTS, given that BOOTS was the family name) or by their family name getting made for them, then lineages could survive updates.
Why does this matter whether or not lineages can survive updates? Well, there's some old threads by Jason this one https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6087 and this one https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=5824 He also said this:
I'm also perplexed that there have been no extremely long or even eternal family lines. 288 is the record, on a less-populated server, and 11 months ago. The usual weekly record never tops 80. That's 19 hours, and is impressive, but.... it's clear to me that it's just not important enough to anyone. I envisioned people hopping on discord during desperate times and trying to recruit players to keep the flame burning through the night.
He also expected when he removed The Rift the following:
Eternal survival of one family will be possible through distant resource outposts and migration.

Since a week consists of 7 days, with 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in a hour, and one minute being an OHOL year, a week is 10,080 OHOL years. In the sense of eternity, one may as well call that nothing. The age of the Earth is estimated at something like 4.54 billion years according to Wikipedia. Let's assume that the Earth has existed eternally (it hasn't... but the age of the Earth is less than the age of the universe). Heck, I can assume that Jason made only one update every 10 weeks. (100,000 / 4 billion) = 0.000025. That's the fraction of eternity an OHOL can exist in between updates. To get a sense on that, let's suppose that eternity were equivalent to a day, a day was how long the Earth has existed. How long would 100,000 years last? There's 86,400 seconds in a day. (0.000025 x 86,400) = 2.16 seconds. So, if Jason did only one update every 10 weeks, then an OHOL family could last 2.16 seconds of one of our days. That's not an eternity, not even close.
And it's even less like eternity were I use the age of the universe and get a more accurate average on how often Jason updates. But, I don't need to in this case, since that would turn the 2.16 seconds number into a smaller one, since 100,000 years would get replaced by a smaller number and 4 billion would get replaced by a larger number. So families only have the possibility of surviving an even smaller fraction of an eternity in OHOL at present.

Heh, my family has died out many times because of an update. It's annoying, but it is what it is.

Add zoom and hotkeys to the base game (see Hetuw mod) to improve the popularity of the game.
