Tool Tier List

So, I made one of these. Thought it might be interesting considering the current conundrum we find ourselves in with the new tool learning mechanic. This tier list only consists of things that are considered tools, which means there will be some obvious contenders missing, such as the froe, mallet and firing forge. To make this list I used the tools Jason listed in this thread:

https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8196

So please tell me if I missed an item that's considered a tool in-game and I'll edit it into the list. Without further ado the link to the tier list can be found here:

https://tiermaker.com/create/one-hour-o … ols-200574

The question is what tools are good to learn, and which tools are not as good to learn. I haven't been playing around with it, since I'm busy playing other games atm, so I might very well be completely wrong but here is my version of this tier list. Feel free to post your own in this thread and give your reasons why you filled it in as you did. Anyway here's mine:

Feel free to disagree with me.

Edit: Tier List has been updated to match tool groups. So now a flint-tipped fire drill will count the same as a fire bow drill for example. A hatchet and an axe seem to still be seen as two seperate tools according to his list, so they are left as they are. Thanks to the people who pointed it out.

Edit 2: Oops, missed the roller. I has now been added.

Re: Tool Tier List

here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ … 7&range=A1

36 total categories.

Let's see how many categories Oil needs.  Is it more than 10?

I took Jason’s list of tools as the source. I agree that for example needle and thread, and needle and ball of thread should be counted as the same tool, so you don’t need to learn them separately. As far as Im aware that’s not how it works currently in-game. I used what Jason himself has defined as different tools. The link to that thread is in the OP.

Oh, the needle is bugged and function as separate categories?

Haven't tested it out myself but they are considered to be different tools on Jasons list, same with the sterilised knife and regular knife.

Re: Tool Tier List

Needle and Thread & Needle and Ball of Thread count as the same tool, if you learn one you automatically know the other. Knives are their own tools, but Sterilized Knives are the same tool as Sterilized Pads. The same is true for the Bow Drills and Hoes - each of those sets has two tool items within them.

So you are saying that if you learn Needle and Thread or Needle and Ball of Thread you automatically learn the other without using two seperate tool slots for effectively the same tool?

If this is the case I'll remove all the duplicate tools from the list and edit the OP.

Yes, that is how it works. It was mentioned by Jason at the very beginning https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8196.

Re: Tool Tier List

Up to this point I've felt the shovel is the single most useful tool out of all of them. You use it to make compost, dig up stones, remove bushes/plants, build fences, bury people (if you want), farm potatoes... Might've forgot something still. I feel it has more uses than any of the other tools and I definitely don't mind using one of my slots on it (especially since it allows me to put dung in all the wet compost piles you see all over the place).

For me, S / A tier skills are skills that have more than one use (shovel, knife, needle & thread), whereas the lower tiers are things you rarely need to use at all (lasso, bow & arrow, bowdrill, file). I feel cars/planes/cameras are great to use your last skill slots on if you have some remaining at the end (especially if you made/finished it during your life and finally get to use it), but are indeed generally useless.

It really depends on what you like doing though. If you like smithing, things like the smithing hammer would be super high on the list. Same goes for having the hoe if you like farming or gardening. However, those tools aren't useful in any other way. The tool is great to have in town, not necessarily to have as a skill. All those kinda things are kind of in the middle tier-wise for me for that reason.

In general I think about what I want to do that specific life and base my slots around that. Which skills do I need so I'm able to do this start to finish? I'll ask a smith for tools if I need them, but I don't want to have to ask someone to either dig up or smash rocks for me when I'm trying to build a wall.

edit:
ok I did the thing

I see. I'll edit the tier list and OP.

ETA: After looking over Jasons list again it seems like mostly all tool groups have been cleared up. Hatchet and axe still look like they are considered different tools, so I will still leave both in.

Re: Tool Tier List

Bow is deffinetly not that low on the list. You can get turkeys, get sheep/cow started for the village, defend from bear attacks, kill dangerous animals and get food n cloth for it (carnitas/ducks/wolf hat/mouflon hides). Also a tool to defend village. One bow can feed entire village in right hands with zero water needed.

Re: Tool Tier List

You're somewhat right. Bow is good early game, but if you have sheep/cows and a decent fence, you'd just use it for (a few) clothes / food and you can get those in other places as well. Not worth my slot unless we depend on wild animals for food, which rarely happens. It's good for yum, but takes longer than the other ways to make food especially if the animals start dying out. To me, it still feels like a tool I'd use for maybe 5 minutes and then be done with for the rest of my life unless a griefer takes a bear into a village. Can move it up to like C maybe, to go with all the other tools for specific jobs (in this case, hunter).

The reason I placed the bow in B is that it’s usefulness kinda does of in the late game. Outside of bear attacks and usage as a weapon, most of the animals you attack with bows are usually more or less extinct late arc. All the tools I rated above it are useful to learn at pretty much any point in the arc. That’s just my opinion though.

Also, add this one, Firing Newcomen Roller!

Thanks for the list! Now I can see how many tools Each activity needs.
