Goal completed! 1 MILLION HOURS!
What a fantastic milestone! 1 million hours.... it's about time we celebrate all this little game has gone through! Everyone who has ever played has helped contribute to this goal. We have all collectively pitched in 1 million hours of bug reports, feedback and suggestions! Here's to 4 million more in time!

how is this even counted anyway? No matter how I calculated it, the rate at which it rises makes absolutely no sense

This is based on a total count of actual hours lived inside the game. Based on actual seconds inside the game, actually.
Whenever you die, the server sends a report about your life to the central stats server.
So anyway, this isn't counting time spent in the menu, time spent with the game minimized between lives, etc. Only actually lived time.

At any given time , around 50 players are online at least. Shouldn't it go up 50hours per earth hour then?

I don’t really care how it’s calculated, I just know that so many people have played! Collectively all of us have spent nearly 1million hours in one little game. Maybe there can be a special update when we reach 1 million?
Perhaps when it happens, Jason could spawn in a bunch of gold crowns and everyone could be kings for a day.
Until the inevitable power struggles start to break out and the whole server descends into chaos and slaughter, of course.
