Writing is an important and hard thing to begin and learn.

Writing is an important and hard thing to begin and learn.
As an example, if we make a wood sign with words, any people with a Carving knife can write on the sign but no need to prove the character have knowledge?

if we have a pen and a book, any people can write without learning Writing?

even 1500AD not every one know how to write.
Ancient times, only noble or rich man have ways to learn words.

And here is just the beginning.....

may be material refining do not need knowledge.
but make material to be components, there should require a level of knowledge.

My suggestion is add a system call [knowledge],while new born is 0.
player gain 1 point every year.
[if they read tutorial or books or blue print, they can gain extra point]
high level product require knowledge point(won't consume).
make high level product will gain points.
if player operate the things they should not know, they will fail the work.
A Savage can't write a book or group some component to make a car.

Well our first form of writing should just be pictures. I think we could get a lot of information across in pictures.

Perhaps if we are able to start tanning hide we could use rose madder or indigo to make paint. It could work like a hot iron ingot and smithing hammer where each time you interact with those item the image changes until you get the one you want.

.......you mean use smithing to get A-Z , 26 paper letter, and than craft a letter book.

put paper with letter book on desk or floor, then put the item to craft a word?
but how about [to go and]or other word?
also this need tone of space and time....

Re: Writing is an important and hard thing to begin and learn.

Good idea, a knowledge parameter should be point into place.

A system where you can actually "Teach" your kids and pass down your knowledge level. Lets say an eve spawns a 0 and the more crafting that eve does the more "knowledge points" she gets, certain crafting recipes may require a certain amount of knowledge to craft like smithing or baking, therefore, a town would need to be a certain amount of generations old (given knowledge is passed down) before they can advance in tech.

Books could link well into this, it could be a way for towns to store knowledge so if the town dies, an eve can find it.

when it comes down to "Reading" It could simply be a tech that requires a high knowledge level to craft, like [bare hands] + [Book]  = Writing book IF knowledge > X

Now bare in mind we haven't even got to Leather or irrigation in the game yet so writing will likely come at a later date.

why I talk about writing this early , because before papers and books , wood sign or bamboo book or fabric with Writing are already Existed.

Re: Writing is an important and hard thing to begin and learn.

It really seems like Jason was going for a less artificial approach for the game such as using something like knowledge points to unlock things, and more for a figure out a way to overcome a problem on your own and with the help of other players. He limited the amount of freedom you have personally in order to add more importance to passing down what you know and have down to the generations to come. The whole point of the crafting system being so convoluted is so players can help each other by passing down the information needed to maintaining a tribe to players who do not know the information. This idea of knowledge points would go against the idea of the game, since you would be gaining and manipulating things on your own with and passing down information automatically.
Writing is more of a social effort since everyone has to be on board and agree upon what a symbol means rather than some object, such as the wheel, being created to make everyone's life easier.

Re: Writing is an important and hard thing to begin and learn.

I think it'd be somewhat immersion breaking if you could write in plain English for signs etc. I'd prefer trying to communicate with images, e.g. picture of a carrot, bear, seed, house, rabbit etc. Obviously this would prevent people writing their names, and shit-talking. Not a perfect solution, but IMO most preferable and contextually realistic.

Historically this could be implemented similarly to the central American and Egyptian hieroglyphic writing style.

knowledge points is just a unlock system.
player still need to learn them self. play normal as now.
one of the main function is don't let a Savage can write a book or group some component to make a car.

knowledge points always begin from 0.
player gain 1 point every year.[if they get tutorial or books or blue print, they can gain extra point]
They stile need to learn from the society in real life.

0-5 is the child time, while arrive 6, they unlock to pack things up(include watering). Also unlock to craft the things about with wood.
10 to unlock how to kill animals or human. Also unlock to craft the things about pie and metal.
20 to unlock building with mud.
30 to unlock building with wood.
40 to unlock catch animal.
60 to unlock steel and [pan & paper](put with an item will craft out a picture on paper of that item)
after 60, there will be the new world.
I predict 100 to unlock writing word on paper or sign.
