Big change to the way /DIE works (family skip list, Eve overload)

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/ … 84efdd7649

/DIE lets you cycle through families, but you will never run out of families by doing this.  If you run out, you'll cycle back through again.

The only way someone becomes Eve now is if a new Eve is really needed (all available mothers are on birth cooldown or real area ban for you, which comes only from living 30+ years in a place or being involved in a murder).

This will lead to a dramatic reduction in the number of Eves in the game.  Hopefully way fewer than 900 a day, or whatever I last measured.

This is really good, opens space for mechanics that reward players with eve spawns, like living to 60, or respawning to a family, like graves and maybe photographs

Re: Big change to the way /DIE works (family skip list, Eve overload)

Is this a server side change that's active right now or will it require an update to go out?

I think this is a good change, I know a lot of people really enjoy playing as Eves, but IMO it's just not feasible to support that many Eves at the same time, no matter the player count - even if OHOL had 100x as many players, you'd have 100x as many people that would want to be an Eve. Eves should be something special and rare.

This should also help with families dying out due to lack of babies.

From what I can tell from the github link, it's server side.

Edit: It appears to be live as well, just went on a slashdie streak and it took me many tries to get to an eve. It really felt like cycling through families.

Sounds like people who want to play Eve would be back to doing the kill me baby thing but I don't think it's worth doing considering the lack of early game at this point.

I'm really optimistic about this change being positive! Let's see how it works.

Is it possible to keep dying to return to same family you last left?

Pretty sure you only cycle to families you aren't area banned to.

What if I run 200 tiles away before I die?

You're still banned from the area. Your ban is based off where you are born and not where you die. Of course this means you can always get around bans by just having someone walk outside of town but that's a bit of a hassle for both parties.

Oh I see, so the more settlements a family has (fireplaces and nurseries far from each other) the family can get reincarnations?

I don't think the change is live now. You become Eve faster and more often than ever it seems.

Yeah, change isn't life yet, I /died out to Eve and played about 15 minutes before killing myself.

Probably people getting their last minute Eve shenanigans in before the change.

Re: Big change to the way /DIE works (family skip list, Eve overload)

It's potentially a good change, people who like to eve will still have access to the small servers. It also perpetuates lineages on big server, hopefully we will see more towns surviving the 24 hour cycle.

It would be interesting as a reward system, if there was some special way to start a town on big server if certain criteria were met. Perhaps players who die at sixty could have a small chance of rolling an eve spawn randomly.

Re: Big change to the way /DIE works (family skip list, Eve overload)

I love that Eve problem is being addressed, and hopefully we can get back to starter camps being a thing again after some more changes. Every life being in a town feels bad still, lots of drama and murder and no escape from it. As Tarr said on discord earlier this evening - although eve play was very samey, you were more guarenteed to have people in your family that wanted to really play the game rather than cause a ruckus.

Question - if a child uses /die before being picked up does it reset birth cooldown or does it not? If it does not, then that needs to be changed when this goes live. Players that are not aware could potentially /die on the same mother multiple times if they recycle through multiple times.

I am happy for this change, but I worry that there will need to be some kind of limit on /die spamming to prevent players repeatedly cycling through all available families, either out of ignorance (not realizing they can't just die a few times to become Eve) or intentionally to annoy other people by spamming SIDS deaths or in an attempt to eventually get lucky enough to spawn as Eve while all mothers are on cool-down.

It may be necessary to find somewhere else to put people that refuse to settle down.   Some kind of hard cap on the number of times you can use /die in a short period of time might be a good idea.  Like if you have used the command more than X number of times in the last 30 minutes, you can't keep spamming /die and will have to start killing yourself the slow way.   Or after someone has cycled through all available families two or three times, they get kicked out into the woods as an Adam (not an Eve).   This would limit the ability to abuse /die repeatedly to circumvent the Eve restrictions.

But I guess we can wait to see what happens.  I might be worrying over nothing, but I've seen enough crazy antics in this game to assume the worst.
