Whenever I start the game it can not update because it needs to be in a file that is not read only.
So, I've tried everything and on my computer with windows ten the files themselves are never read-only. The documents in the files can be changed back and forth, but not the files themselves, so when I start the game it can not update and I can not play. Inheritance is enabled, I am administrator with full access. I have found that only zipped files can be "not read-only." Is it possible for me to play this game? It will not update on my computer.

are you using custom server in settings? , cause if it's the case you have to uncheck it to make the update

Thank you for responding, but I dont know what you mean. The only in game settings are "full screen, music, and sound" when I go to login the game tries to update but can not. I have never been able to play.

I play this on Windows 10 myself and have never had any problems. Where did you put the game files?

Have you tried creating a games folder in your c drive and putting it there? You could also place it in program files (x86). It might solve your problem

I've actually set onelife to run in admin mode on win 10 to get it to work properly. This is easy to do by editing the properties of a shortcut (under compatibility).
It opens up the potential for malignant code but I trust Jason and any mods I check the code of myself first.
I am Eve Raven. If not, I will name my babies after flying creatures. Or ridiculous and long names like Oluwadunmininu.

Jesus. How has no one else come across this...
I got you bro. Change the name of onelife.exe to anything different (onelife1.exe for example).
It's trying to modify itself while it's open.
Now it will make a new updated onelide.exe to play.

Running as admin is easier, but I get it.

I had to run it as administrator AFTER putting in c drive AFTER changing its name. only this combination let it work for me. even tried it on an old crappy computer I had around.

okay NOW after I log in after the map is loaded the screen just sits there, black with white text, until it tells me I died when I was 15 from starvation, then it prompts me to restart the game. thats all it does.

When you say the screen is "black with white text" do you simply mean the loading screen, or something different? Are you sure the game has fully loaded? When entering the game for the first time, the map can take a long time to load. For some, it might take long enough that you starve before it loads fully.
Are you sure your computer has good enough specs to run the game? Maybe you can try pausing or closing unnecessary things running in the background. Or maybe try changing your power plan to maximize performance (You can do this through the control panel). Are your drives fully updated?
Did you place the files in program files (x86), or a new games folder? The program files and program files (x86) folders can be iffy in my experience (at least in Windows 8 and windows 10).
Have you tried troubleshooting compatibility on the exe file? What about running it in compatibility mode?
Sorry I can't be more help. I sincerely hope that someone with more knowledge of Windows can help you.

You are running the new onelife.exe that's generated, right? Not the one with the name you altered.
Your plight sounds very similar to my experience. I had forgotten about this second part of the problem.
Do let me know if this fixes things.
