What if the timer only applied to the wheels. Overtime the wheels would break down until it turned back into a sledge. Let's say, for example, over time it would devolve from a hand cart, to a wheelbarrow, then finally to a sledge. I mean, sledges and boxes don't deteriorate, but wheelbarrows and carts do. The only difference is the wheels. Once you put wheels on it, suddenly the whole box is compromised? That seems silly.
So right now, hand carts are the end all be all. They're just flat out, the best. There's no reason to use a wheelbarrow, unless you don't have enough wheels (which is silly), and you're going to make it a cart as soon as possible anyway. The sledge is only nice because it sucks so much that people probably aren't going to steal it, and that it doesn't decay. So why not just make them the various stages of carts?
Let's say the sledge stays the same in all regards, but the wheelbarrow has a time limit (lets say 5 hours). After the 5 hours, the wheel breaks, becomes a sledge again, and you have to put on a new wheel. The cart might have a shorter time limit, while not necessary, it could make give wheelbarrow more viability. Either way, after time, it would deteriorate back into a wheelbarrow and you'd have to put on a new wheel again.
So, thoughts?

I once had a griefer steal a sledge from Trump Town back in the day :'(
+1 for general idea, but important to note that it's not just wheels on wheelbarrows/carts that get fucked. Obviously balance is key, hence the +1.
