i was born amy to a small village with a bear. it nearly claimed the life of one of my cousins and it was terribly frightening. but soon the bear was slain and the town returned to a life of mundane peace.
as i grew along with my crops i wondered, is this all that will become of me? was i born amy to do nothing but fertilize some plants and water them in a constant cycle? trapped in a cruel game of survival against nature and the devious mind of other humans?
as the queen paraded her young son in her arms i grew determined not to end this life like others. i would change a child's life.
so when i grew of age i took it upon myself to save all the children to came into my arms. i cooed over my oldest daughter, Helen, naming her after the famous beauty whose looks caused the destruction of Troy. i told her of the story of Troy and how a single golden apple cost so many lives. she asked "y mom?" with no answer to provide her i merely said "use your beauty wisely and live gloriously"
after she was grown the aged queen found a young boy. a second cousin of sorts. i asked him where his mom was and the queen told me she found him. a sad fate it was, to be abandoned. but he cried, "no." i saw his iron will and told him he is chosen to lead us. but he only cried "name" "name" "name".
i am not your mother! i shouted at the boy. but he did not cease his wails. "name". "name" he called
i took him north to look for his mother, where he said she ran.
i took pity on the boy and named him Athens. told him he can be the master of his own fate, even if he was abandoned by his mother.
By then the queen's young son had grown. His name was Jax and he was filled with fiery spirit, as wild as the wolf hat upon his young head. His first wish was to be the next king, to follow after his mother's steps. but she denied him, saying "only women can inherit the crown. it is tradition". but he wished to change his mother's mind. we wished him luck.
Despite our searching, we could not find Athens' mother until he was too grown to be named. he cried at his mother, saying "mum!" "mother!" "you abandoned me" but she ran off. i saw darkness growing in his eyes. he cried for revenge. despite my pleas that he could be kind, good, and wise, he chose to embrace evil. he had decided to be evil the moment his mother abandoned him.
while he plotted his mother's demise i found my young brother, also abandoned. i lamented my fate, to rescue children who were doomed to be discontent with the world. he went off and Athens came to me, confiding in me his plans to grow an empire and to overthrow the queen. he wished to name the empire the "motherless ones". and he asked for my support. but i remained silent. i had just birthed my second, another girl that i named cassandra.
jax reappeared now, a full grown man with a beard. he declared to his mother that he wished to be hunter, to provide for his family. the queen and I endorsed his dream and he went off happily.
i too, took my daughter into the woods. i held her in my arms and told her, "young one, you will have a life of chaos. the boy i rescued wishes mayhem. you can choose your part in this play. whether you support him or fight him is up to you. you are the only master of your destiny."
as my smallest, asha, was born i witnessed my mother stab my young brother. still a tiny thing. she claimed he was a griefer, that he was upset with his fate and hid pies from the family. despite that i wept for his loss of life.
athens came to me then, "my adopted mother," he said, "the queen tried to kill me. we must overthrow her."
"support me", he pleaded, "i will create a parliament. vote king Athens" he cried. Jax, moved by his speech, and reminded of his own childhood wish to rule, supported him.
but he hesitated to follow Athens' plan. "we cant kill her. it will be illegitimate rule. she is still my mother," he pleaded.
The two stood beside one another at the forge, discussing plans over my brother's bones.
My last would be born at this time, another daughter i named Hera.
Helen came to me with a child in hand and i gasped, "helen you grew into your name. so beautiful"
"but i still haven't captured a man's heart" she said.
as i typed the words, "you could marry athens" the boy and Jax came to us.
"Amy, the plan is cancelled," Athens said. "because the queen... is DEAD" he laughed
Jax screamed in rage. pulling out his knife and ensuing chase. "my nephew killed my mother!" he cried and rushed after Athens, who pranced away gleefully.
Athens later came to me after losing Jax. "i am king," he said.
"what will you do?" i asked
"uncle wants to kill me. Amy, help me!" he cried. i remained unmoved and he said, "listen, i didnt kill the queen." his pleas reminded me of the lost babe i found, holding onto the queen for dear life.
"i know that Athens." i sighed, and reached out to Jax, who had run back into the farm.
"Jax. Athens did not kill your mother" he stopped. and paused
"he had no knife. no bow. he is a liar but he is not evil" i pleaded. "remember your words to your mother. to become a hunter for this family and to provide food for our family. is this how she would have wanted you to be known? as the killer of your own kin?"
then he put away his knife. and the two men, now both grown with full beards stood face to face.
Jax shook his head. "you shame me" he snarled "i will not call you nephew anymore"
the two stood in the square where the bear and my only sibling was slain. a gap between the two. a rift created by lies and mistrust.
"i was born evil like my mother," athens explained
"my dearest athens, you always had a choice"
"amy have i failed you?"
"no."
he sighed, and looked back at his uncle. "im sorry uncle, i have wronged you and this town."
"i accept." jax replied, "on the condition you may be gone from my face of anger"
"am i banished?!" athens cried.
as jax stormed off athens turned to me. "uncle has banished me. there is only one solution"
"repentance" i offered
but the boy, he sneered. "kill uncle jax." right as jax walked back. the two stormed off in another chase. and i was left alone in the farm. asha comforted me, saying "i cannot change the chaos, but i can bury the bodies."
"you can retell their stories" and she agreed. i gave her my bag and my shoes. the last of my clothes. as my withering bones settled, ready to be put in a grave, i watched her with her small daughter and Athens returned with Jax's knife.
"Amy, jax is dead. i am now king!" he cried.
he finished his mission, and he was now king. he put down the knife for a moment to grab food and asha snatched it, squirreling it away in the bag i gave her moments before.
jax stormed back, screaming "where is it! where is it aunt amy!!"
"i do not wish to see more death" asha pleaded. a pacifist in my own blood. i remained silent as athens cried, "i am king! i am your king! i command you all to build me a palace!"
but my little granddaughter challenged him, "i am queen" she laughed, much as Athens once did. all in the center of town.

Ah, the town narrator! I think I danced with you as a baby.
I was very lucky to have survived that bear. It killed my mom when I was born, then took a bite out of me while I was smithing as a child. Joke's on the bear though, because I died of old age and it died of being shot by my uncle.
But yeah, I remember Athens, the motherless one. Guess what Athens, I was motherless too, but did I go on a crusade? No! I became a potter. He stole my pants while I was trying to give them to my granddaughter. What kind of king steals pants from a baby? I tried to yell at him but only got as far as "Yo" before I died. Glad I never supported him.
I hope those pants gave him a rash.
Edit: Looks like a grizzly bear killed my daughter, and Athens killed my son. I guess that sums up my life pretty well.

cousin! i recall you. we were practically twins. both babes dancing on the wastes. im sorry Athens grew to be selfish. i just wanted to give him a chance to decide his own path instead of one carved for him as an abandoned babe. im glad you lived to old age, you were a good dance partner

Hi Mom. I was Helen, your firstborn child to whom you told many tales.
I wanted to ask Athens for his hand in marriage, and to prove my love to him I lead him to a refuge where he could be safe from Jax. Little did I know, Jax had followed us there and tried to stab Athens. But he starved before he could put the knife down, knowing doing so would be a death wish.
A bunch of kiddos ran to collect Jax’s loot as I proclaimed he was dead. I took a loincloth from his corpse as a statement that I had been the one who essentially killed him. If he’d had stayed in town, if I hadn’t lead him away, Jax would have continued to hunt my love.
But Athens wasn’t pleased with me. He didn’t give me any credit and I decided to give him the knife instead of keeping it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Athens became corrupt when the knife was in his possession, threatening to stab me if I didn’t give him my clothes. (Well, he hinted at it more indirectly — standing with his knife in hand, free from his bag, while he told me he needed my clothes.) I was forced to flee with my child. And he didn’t, as far as I know, hunt any of the children who had looted more of his valuables, like his bag and other clothes. (Which I ended up giving the king later before I died...)
By the time I arrived, you had already passed, dear mother. And soon I did too, for I was forced to press ESC and then % due to real life matters. I loved listening to your tales. And although I wasn’t the cause of war, I sure did contribute to it — just as you prophesied.
Thank you for your beautiful story.
Helen

then it was wise of asha to hide the knife. he only managed to slay one innocent. dear sunny... i recall him crying, saying "scary" as jax and athens quarreled. its unfortunate that this argument cost him his life.
and you, my eldest. im sorry to have cursed you to seek what you could not possess. i wanted a better life for you, with someone to love. if you are born to me again i hope to give you a blessed name and to tell you of peace and love, rather than war and heartbreak. maybe next time i will find you a kinder husband
also, lotus it seems that you and i end up getting born in the same family quite a bit! and have many adventures together. first as waylon, then as mary, and now as helen. i wonder what interesting life we will be born together next!

That would have been my boy, Sunny. Glad he was the only one to die at Athens' hand.
You were a good dance partner too. Better than me at least. I grew old far too quickly and had to get to work.
Also Helen fed my youngest son, Barnaby. Thank you Helen. I was old, but still wanted a good life for him. He was smithing with his sister when I died.
