Gender lightning rod

In reference to the "popping out babies" comment, what's the purpose of males or gender at the moment?

Re: Gender lightning rod

Ah, you really want to sidle up to a lightning rod and touch your tongue to it, don't you Purumus?

The purpose of biological gender in the game is the same as the purpose of biological gender in the real world, minus any cross-breeding mechanics.  Only women can have babies, and only women can breastfeed.

Men are "dead ends" in the matryoshka doll tree just like they are dead ends in real life.

Every woman on the planet today is at the end of a continuous chain of mothers who had at least one daughter going back 1.2 billion years.  Your maternal grandma had at least one daughter, I know it.  And your maternal maternal great grandma had at least one daughter.

Every man is at the end of a father chain too... but there's uncertainty at every step of the way, so it feels different.

Re: Gender lightning rod

"what's the purpose of males or gender at the moment?"

Perhaps the above "berry muncher" example can give us an idea about how males could end up in differentiated roles based on the current game dynamics. Say such a berry muncher tribe exists but they are preyed upon by a technologically superior tribe which has a thing for genocide.

If the only imperative was reproduction, the men (and menopausal women) would be pretty much useless and would perhaps just be better off left to wander into the desert and die. But in this case since a threat exists to the women -in the form of the "Genocide Tribe"- the men could form a warrior cast in order to protect them. Because the men are inconsequential to population growth anyway, them taking risks while the women are more conservative makes sense. (It's worth noting that after child bearing age the women and men are pretty much identical, so perhaps the warrior ranks would include grannies!).

Of course this would never actually happen, no sane human being would submit to berry munching and baby production for an endless, tedious hour while their male counterparts run around playing war.

Unless the males forced them to?

Re: Gender lightning rod

Except for the berry munching, you just arrived at standard societal gender roles by first principles.  See the Age and Gender tab for the Iraq war data here:

http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/ … raq07.html

Suppose you have two tribes.  One sends its men to war and keeps its women safe at home.  The other sends its women to war and keeps its men safe at home.  Suppose there's no strength difference between men and women (there actually isn't very much of a strength difference, on average, in reality, given the same training, and especially if weapons are involved).  Which tribe wins, in the long run?

Replace the two tribes with two sinking, arctic ships.  On one ship, the men get on the lifeboats first.  On the other, the women get on the lifeboats first.

http://www.anesi.com/titanic.htm

Such old-fashioned nonsense, this chivalry stuff...

Anyway, one thing that's always puzzled me is the preference for male over female babies in many cultures.  Shouldn't the same subconscious logic that leads you to put women on the lifeboat have you hoping for daughters over sons?

That isn't even close to the purpose of biological sex in the real world.

No, men pass on genetic material in real life.  Those that do are not dead ends.  Only those who don't reproduce are dead ends (same holds for women).

No.  The preference for sons concerns who will provide for the parents in their old age.

Re: Gender lightning rod

I've read studies that women live longer because they have two copies of the X chromosome so when a change happens in the sequence it can repair itself guided by the other copy.
Also it appears some studies have concluded that the Y chromosome evolves (Gains genetic changes) faster because they do not have a another Y chromosome to copy from.

Spoonwood you don't need to dispute everything Jason says, makes you seem like a negative Nancy.

But fathers is Spoonwoods most favorite topic, at least here he needs to be "allowed" to participate.

By the way the future for men does not look so bright:

"Fertility specialists have found a way for women to have babies without men."

"Taken to its extreme, it could lead to the science fiction nightmare of a female-dominated society where men have little or no role."

i guess that had to do with organizing war, since men had not to take care of the children they could organize, so they had a leader, becoming a leader is much higher social rank then just having kids, since as leader you can in theory have tons of kids... i guess this / spreading of genes is also what makes male / female evolution work, until Christianity messed it up...

Lol Looks like a bear sneaked into the tree of daughters, maybe thats the future, we will end all up as bears and finally bear griefing is over. I knew that Jason is from the future!

By the way beautiful picture!

lol, simplicity always wins long term. no need for big factories, just put your engine in the box plus 4 wheels and go. No need for a Tesla. Of course he forgot to add the thief security, since in the future there are no thiefs, all learn as child how to create their own engine with own wooden box, no need to steal...

Women's health care gets better funding than men's.  Also, women often work in less deadly professions than men.  Men go to prison more often also.

Sure, if someone else were correcting his errors, than alright.  But, it's not good to let mistakes go passed over.  And so what about looking like a negative Nancy?  Apparently you have a problem with hearing negative information and putting it in proper perspective to positive information, because often enough negative information needs to get said and understood.

Re: Gender lightning rod

Game wise the purpose of the male gender is two fold:

1) To leave town to gather resources.  Why?  To keep women in town so that babies aren't birthed away from it.  Thus forcing the new mom to decide to abandon the baby, or her gathering mission (and possibly basket, cart, horse, etc...)

2) To leave town and make contact with other towns in order to procure the exclusive resources from other biomes.  Why?  Again to keep women in town so that they can continue the family tree without interruptions.

Hence, in game men ideally should not be doing most in town professions.  Women are fully capable of being the bakers, farmers, etc. with newborns in tow.  Smithing may be the only in town job I would consider to be a male or elder only profession due to its requirements for focus and timing.

Or you can do like me and learn to baby juggle.  Women can pretty much do whatever job they want, as long as they are good at multi-tasking.   Worst case scenario, you use one extra piece of kindling/charcoal because you have to take a short break to breastfeed.  Not the end of the world, by any means.

I like being a working mom and doing a job with my baby nearby.   I think it is useful for newer players to be able to see all the steps involved in doing a complex job.    And you don't have much else to do while you are a baby except begging for clothes or asking for a name.

The homelands update is a mixed blessing.   It cuts out the problem of giving birth on horseback miles from town.   But it also discourages you from leaving town in the middle of a baby drought, if you are the only reproductive age female in town.     However, I don't consider it a problem to leave as a woman if your village has a healthy population and the town needs additional resources urgently.  A guy would be preferred, but I will work with what I've got.   In fact, if you care about your meme score, the life of a wild woman might be right for you.   Fewer troublesome offspring to drag down your score.

oh be careful, saw one get killed for using too much kindling for baking...

male in OHOL are just a limited version of a women, no need for them, just use /die and enjoy the future of female reproduction. Time to get rid of the dead end of evolution!?

SpoonWood, did you really ressurect 3 year old discussion just to disagree with Jason about everything? Lmao.

Have you ever thought you might have over-played this game? Reading your posts it honestly seems like it doesn't bring you joy anymore. And if you've been playing for over a year, I'd say you got your money worth. Why not Marie Kondo it?

Strangely, I saw this post on the front page.  I couldn't quote it at first also, so something definitely seems weird.

merryllamax wrote:

I haven't played on bs2 since January 31st I think (sigmen checked), and before that I only played like 4 times since The Rift began, which I never played.  I haven't played low pop for a few weeks now also.

No, it's not that simple.  Time does not suffice.  There does exist the matter of false advertising.
