Item in hand disappears when mother picks me up
adults pick me up and whatever i'm holding disappears.

We need more information. I've never seen an item disappear from being picked up (although I have seen them move more than 10 tiles away lol)

Yeah, you can't hold anything while being held, so you drop it on the ground.
If the ground is cluttered, then it may move quite far away to find a place to land.
