Once a server has at least 15 players on it, fertility occurs due to bands. You can still dig up a well outside of your band, and likely have an iron unlock outside of your band also. Even if you don't have an iron unlock, Eves and a child or two don't need iron to survive if they keep moving or if they farm a little or get to a developed town outside of their band.

Having one child after starting as a baby near a biome band border differs a good bit than from playing as Eve in plenty of situations.
