Armors are mainly made out of iron and give some extra hitpoints (1 to 3) depending of the armor, all would have by default one more hitpoint.
Once they loose all the hitpoints you need again some iron to repair.
If you wear an armor, your speed is (x95, x9, x85)(armor with more hitpoints would be more / less heavy
If knife / sword / arrow hit an armor, they may brake similar to tool uses. A sword for sure breaks far less often then an knife.

What if a greifer gets the armor?

he is slower, so you can run away and if you are more then him you can still kill him.
Or craft an armor for yourself....
For example, if he hast the best plus 3 armor, he has speed x0.85 and in total 5 hp. 3 people together would have 2*3 = 6 hp also weapons would have a small cooldown after you it, so maybe even 2 people would be enough to kill one with an heavy armor.

This would be a straight up griefer buff.

only if we just want to play a pure farming and eating simulation.

Every time we try to implement combat we get like, really extreme griefing because it's super easy to be a griefer and super hard to be a community dealing with a griefer. I like the idea of having armor and war and combat but I'd really like to see balance that would prevent this from becoming another griefapalooza.
And I mean, like, right now would be the worst possible time to implement a new mechanic that buffs grief, I've been dealing with ten years olds running around screeching f and grownups filling every bowl in town with berries then starving because they don't recognize they can eat tacos all day today

We do, we absolutely do. It is better without fighting. Griefers always abuse fighting.

If we did have armour, it would have to tie into this "Voting off the island" thing that Jason wants. There should be something stopping players from being able to
1. Wear it
2. Mass produce it
Possibilities include having to be below a certain number of curses
Having a gene score above a chosen threshold (that depends on the range and averages of the current gene scores, number of players, etc.)
Something to do with the leadership system or posse system
