a multiplayer game of parenting and civilization building

And the reason for this problem is very simple: progress in this game is collective and accumulative. As soon as one person in a village builds a diesel pump, everyone has it going forward.
Not necessarily, since a well can get blocked off. Also, there exists an assumption here that a diesel water pump would only get made once in a village. When ponds could get dug up into wells I think there existed a town with multiple diesel water pumps. And players should do things like that if they want to do so and can.
Also, when cars got made before they would consistently disappear from a town. Same for horses. Progress wasn't collective and accumulative in those cases.
It was a tech-tree challenge only for one person or a small group of people. They essentially "spoiled" it for everyone else going forward.
No, it didn't get "spoiled", because of that. It got "spoiled" because of the spring system which doesn't make multiple diesel water pumps in a town viable.
Imagine a brand new player being born in a town where all tech is already built.
Since cars have existed, on the main servers, there never has been a town that had a running car for every adult in that town.
But even there, WHY extend the road?
Because nearby oil just ran out, and the expert family we were depending on nearby just died out, and we need to extend the road farther to reach more oil and other experts.
No, no family has to do such. They will die out anyways no matter what they do. There is no compelling reason to do anything for survival purposes in this game, there never has been, and likely there never will be.
There have to be challenges facing you, when you're born into a village that has already invented everything, because that will be the experience of 99% of the lives lived in the game.
No, 99% of lives lived in the game have not had both types of radios existing. Also, the game has had periods where there were many more Eves during a week, and many lives lived with lower technological levels around than, well basically since the change that got rid of Eve spawning by choice.
The game could also have Eve spawning by choice, which would slow the tech pace down.
The game could has have mating mechanics as necessary in most cases which also would slow the tech pace down.
Additionally, Jason is wrong. Most people don't play this game for 'survival' challenge reasons. The graphics aren't right for that sort of game. There aren't enough ways to die. There is no way to survive individually or collectively either because of time or some looming update.
Also, Crafting things is more interesting and always has been. Roleplyaing is more interesting and always has been. Building structures is more interesting and always has been. And people do do things for aesthetic reasons.
