There are 28 new piles in this week's update already (aka, DOZENS)

https://edge.onetech.info/

So many piles.

By having a bunch of piles of different things around, you can create a real "market bazar" feeling.

This was in response to a reported issue.

Pile of worms, yessir.

Wait a minute... shouldn't you put worms in a bowl, or in a rabbit/water pouch?
and shouldn't the bowl of goose eggs be containable?

Also for some reason can't stack back wooden disks (You can add a wooden disk to stack of wooden disks, but can't add a wooden disk to another wooden disk to make stack again).
This sometimes makes mess when people unstack them with no reason.

Jason, in that issue you mention that hats are hard to create a stack for because of combinatorial issues.

What is stopping a stack from acting exactly like a ‘container-less’ container. Hats can be put into crates, so what’s stopping a stack of hats from operating like an invisible crate?

Obviously a different question from if they *should* stack but it as wondering about the mechanics of it.

What about if Stacks can be made only by the same type of hat?  Only a straw hat stack.

At least do staw hats they litter A LOT!

Also Needles and Dirty wool pads!?

Since we're obviously targeting clutter here, how about some dry bean changes? Why can't we collect them the same way as green beans by just using a bowl on the bean plant? They're SUPER annoying clutter

Yes, please!     Tiny little dry beans filling up all the tiles because people mis-clicked the bean plants with an empty hand is super annoying and unnecessary.

Requiring a bowl to harvest the dry beans would keep them contained and cut down on accidental clutter.

If it is requested to use a bowl to harvest dry beans, how do you get seed to plant a new one ?

Re: There are 28 new piles in this week's update already (aka, DOZENS)

Use the bowl on the dry bean plant to harvest.   Gives a full bowl.   Then you just pull beans out of the bowl if you need to plant them, like normal.

The difference is that harvesting is a one-click process AND requires a bowl.    This prevents people from accidentally picking one bean when running around near the bean plants.  And it ensures that dry beans start out in a bowl.   If you want to pull all the beans out and scatter them on the ground, you could still do that.  But it would require more work to be that messy.

Maybe we could have a similar system to the dung buckets? Bowls of wheat fill a bucket, buckets fill a box? They do create a lot of clutter on the farm and moving wheat from the farm to the kitchen is a pain.

Piles of straw would also be nice, and complements the grain storage. Something like, straw stacks and using a rope makes the stack into a portable bale.

Re: There are 28 new piles in this week's update already (aka, DOZENS)

Egg bowl is already containable.

I will look at the situation with dry beans and wooden disks.  Bowl of worms is a great idea.

For a few of the things that I skipped (pencils and bone needles), the idea was this:

--Is this something that you generally WANT to gather or make in bulk?  If so, they should stack.  You might gather a bunch of worms before fishing (and pile them next to the fishing hole).

Needles and pencils are only made in bulk by accident.  Allowing them to stack just kinda papers over a different problem that I don't want to paper over just yet.

For the hats, the problem is not stacking different colors together (that would obviously not be possible).  The problem is just that there are SO MANY HATS in the game, because of all the colors and decorations.  Making a stack for each, and keeping it all straight, would be a lot of work.  Six colors, three styles, plus some of the styles have 8 different possible decorations.

I suppose I could eventually make a "hat rack" container that only allowed hats to hang on it, but allowed a lot.  I worry that it wouldn't look good, though, with the hat orientation set automatically through containment.

For wooden disks you can probably just add a new recipe to combine two discs to start a stack of these:

aSEfhXP.png

Since currently you can't start the stack again if all discs are removed from the position where they were cut.

This possible solution is similar to the one you did with flint chips when you made them stack, since a stacked set of discs already exist, but is rather limited.:

Flint chips can stack. Fixes #136

Re: There are 28 new piles in this week's update already (aka, DOZENS)

Ah, I see what you mean about the green beans vs dried beans.

In general, I do want individual picking of most things (berries, grapes, tomatoes, etc.).  That is what it feels like to pick things.

Green beans are a historical anomaly.  Not sure what happened there, or why I did it that way, but I baked the ripe-plants sprite WITH the beans all in place.  I could go back and re-make that sprite from its parts, and keep the bean pods separate so that you could step-by-step pick green beans.  However, rebuilding that object would be quite a bit of work (all those separate leave sprites have to be placed just-so), and I don't think it's worth it.

There was also, probably, some reason for the difference there.  Maybe I realized that you can't really see the green bean pods very well, so you couldn't see them disappearing?

Whereas, on the dry bean plant, it's much more visually clear that the pods are disappearing?

In general, my aesthetic rule of thumb is that you pick things one by one, though.

I'm fine with picking one by one, tho making mess on the ground due to missclicking is a little problematic.

No, needles sometimes get made in bulk on purpose.  I seem to even recall discussing that a camp needed a bunch with Fulmen.
