Question about family types

Is there some kind of a mechanism in place to ensure that all the needed skin types actually appear on the map?  Like, maybe one that forces an Eve of a particular family type if there isn't one in existence?  Because I just spent a very frustrating life scouring the countryside looking for someone who could get us some damn sulfur, or an abandoned town with sulfur in it, or any such thing, and never found any.  Just brown people and gingers.  (Admittedly, this was probably not the best task for someone playing without the zoom mod.  It annoys me to admit it, but I think I'm gonna have to break down and install the thing after all.)

I don't necessarily mind the challenge of realizing that, crap, we need to go out into the world and find some way to make rubber before all our crops die of thirst, as long as there's some way to realistically do that.  Did I get unlucky and look in the wrong places, or was there honestly no way to succeed at this particular quest?  Because I can make my peace with the former, but the latter... does not make for good game play.  And I suspect it's the case, because I'm not seeing any black folks showing up on the family tree page right now.

It feels very much like last night when there weren't any animals to be found, all over again.

Re: Question about family types

Yea I don't think there is because, we have no black families alive. Yesterday I spent my whole life leaving at the age of three to travel 5 k to bell town to bring sulfur to the world. I got bit by a wolf right as I popped out my sixth child and only girl. My five boys saved her and made it to bell town. She had one girl and one boy died at the age of 60. Her only girl died childless at the age of 38.

Re: Question about family types

if there is no mechanism in place to make certain there is one of each skin tone, there is a significant probability one will be missing with only six families. Each skin tone type would have 0.75^6 =17.8% chance of not existing.

If my math is right (1-0.178)^4, no mechanism making sure a skin tone exists with complete randomness means there is only about a 53% chance no skin tone will be missing with six families.

Re: Question about family types

Afaik eve spawns were tweaked to be slightly closer together with the race update. In practice it doesn't seem to have changed anything though. Earlier I spent a half hour searching and never found a single trace of civilization. It was tempting to spend my entire life just to prove a point. Seems like the only way to feasibly make this work is to /die until you spawn as a black girl. Get yourself a horse (since they're the only race that can) and abandon all your babies in the wild while searching for a brown family. If you get lucky you'll find brown town and have at least one girl there. Right now that's the only realistic way that any player of any skill level can progress a town past the deep well. If you're another race all you can really do is desperately bide your time and pray that a black girl on a horse rides into town one day.

Thing is, most players don't even know about this very important update. They live blissfully ignorant lives where water and food is infinite because other people make it happen for them. I tried explaining the problem to a few browntowns. Why do we need black people? Why do we need sulfer? What does the newcomen do? That was the response I got from pretty much everyone. Especially with steam's promotion adding brand new players the game is going to be broken for a while. I'm expecting a reaction like when it was first released on steam. A bunch of primitive camps full of nothing but dry wells and starving babies. It's not going to be a good time for new players with the notification that mom gets. When everyone is starving another berrymuncher is just a liability.

There's no mechanic to balance races in the game. We had to kill off a ginger family in hopes of a black Eve spawning so the game could get passed deep well tech. Having 2+ white families while now missing black + ginger is pretty insulting tbh as they're useless AND were taking up lineage slots that were needed to actually do something other than sit around family. Not only is it frustrating to watch as white Eves spawn but then watching as the type of Eve needed fails to thrive just puts salt on the wound.

This update makes me question why he didn't try this when we were in the Hell Cell instead of all those weeks of "testing" oil and depletion. I'm praying tomorrow all the steam players fix these issues but we'll still likely suffer from some problems due to all the new players.

Don't kill the gingers.  You want to eliminate the vanillas.   Those are the unspecialists.

Unfortunately in a world where you're stuck in mid game, have no idea where the two white families are, and only have a few gingers around you do what you need. Obviously, you don't want to kill gingers but they're just as useless up until oil tech which still requires you to get blacks/browns in the first place.

The game really needs minimum numbers for each race just like you don't start having boys until you have x females. No whites until each lineage has X amount (preferably something like 8-10) as whites are basically males but even more useless.

Re: Question about family types

I think the better solution is to give up on oil, unless you already have the skintones lined up.   We have an infinite world and plenty of room to build roads to new water.

First option should be carting from nearby ponds.  Make carts, lots of buckets, and cisterns.   Haul water.

Second option is making a road to the next well site and moving the farms.   Requires less hauling and makes your town easier to find, but spreads you out further which could confuse some people who are used to finding everything close to the village.

Third option can be hunting for the magical flavors of humanity.  But I think this only makes good sense as a horse-riding Coffee.  Anyone else would be better of utilizing local water and laying down roads and migrating to a new well site when the time comes.   You can always follow the road back to older towns when oil is available someday.

...

Less murder.   More village building.
