Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

All clothing should decay.

There's no sense in having limited rabbits if we have infinite backpacks, clogs, straw hats, seal skins, and fancy clothes.    Rabbit clothing already decays, but reed skirt lasts forever.   We never wash our clothing or maintain it in any way.   It should all eventually become rag clothing and fall apart from years of constant use.

Right now, what does or does not decay isn't logical - a pile of wheat decays, but a bundle of wheat does not.   A seal skin coat decays, but a seal hide does not.  Milk and raw meat never spoils. It isn't consistent or realistic.  In fact, everything should have a decay timer, so everything goes away eventually.

Clothing, raw meat, crops, tools, carts, walls, food, roads, diesel engines, radios, cars, airplanes ... nothing lasts forever.

Dust to dust, ashes to ashes.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

I mean that's sort of the issue with him solely looking at rabbits and deciding that their a problem without taking a step back and seeing the big picture. Removing infinite rabbits doesn't suddenly have an real effect on the game as putting on the cheapest nondecaying clothing set still raises your temperature by a moderate amount.

However, when he goes towards the early game clothing he needs to be careful to not make it completely useless like he did to mouflon hides for a split second by reducing their insulation. Make it all decay but be reasonable about it. It's not worth a rope + reeds if the thing decays <6 hours considering any other rope related item doesn't currently decay. Straw hats on the other hand are incredibly cheap and should have a shorter timer (which you then upgrade everyone elses hats to bowlers later when sheep are more plentiful.)

Like I said in the other thread the main issue with rabbits is they produce a lifetimes supply of food by clothing a single person in the village, dress a few people and next thing you know you've potentially fed 1/3rd of your village in a single life.

Kill wild gooseberry bushes after being picked up, cacti stop producing eventually, geese stop laying eggs, and let the meats decay. Nerfing rabbits isn't treating the actual problem we have.

There are many things without logic in OHOL ...
an arrowhead occupies an entire square ... just like a car with horses ... or an engine ... size does not matter in OHOL hehehehe

Mutton is too OP... theoretically, you should be able to feed 10x the number of people by feeding them what would be fed to livestock.

Meaning, mutton should only be worth the food of : 6 Berry+Carrot*0.1(because 90% of energy is lost when moving up tropic level) / 4 (divided by # of pieces of meat)

You are thinking too small.   Look at the food utilization numbers.

https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=69

I think the problem is pretty obvious.    Wild gooseberries are OP.

The replenishment timer on wild gooseberry bush should be changed to match the new rate of pond refill - 168 hours.   So one new berry regrows each week.  Any wild bushes near town will be quickly depleted and no longer provide cheap, easy food.  All food production will require time, labor, iron, and water usage after the initial start-up period.

Also, domestic sheep, pigs and cattle should die of old age, like dogs.    Nothing lives forever.

This would be extreme and maybe we will start having problems with bootstrapping.

Ether make them spawn with like 40 berries and then and they refill after 168 hours
Or make them change over time so they stop producing after the Eve window closes.

I think tie them over the Eve window is better.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

Bananas don't respawn at all.  Neither do carrots, burdock, or onions.

Why should berries?

It only takes four minutes to grow a row of carrots.   We don't need all these pesky gooseberries, cluttering up the map.   It just creates more problems.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

because we will mess with bootstrapping.
It is ok to enforce scarcity by limiting wild berries but only after the bootstrap has ended.

Or we will need to rebalance Berries increasing the number of berries each bush contains to ensure they are enough for bootstrapping.

Eves don't just eat berries, right?

Just increase the initial spawn of burdock/onion/carrot/etc.

yeap that could do, but you have to calculate how much to increase them to match the stable and reliable berry source.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

You are over-thinking things again.   There's no need to carefully balance everything so it is perfect before making this kind of change.  It will just work itself out over time and future updates.

Also, if the lack of renewable wild food makes boot-strapping harder, that is a good thing.   Being an Eve should be hard.   You have nothing and the world is a tough, unforgiving place.   Most Eves should fail.  Most people wandering around in the wild should starve and die.  That is natural and good.

Hopefully, these changes will fix how easy it is to survive in the wild as an experienced player with zoom mod, because that is also a big problem right now.    Way too many people living to 60 in this game.

Don't make things harder for very beginning towns. Better idea would be to make wild gooseberries stop growing after growing 15 berries in total (keep max 6 berries on a bush).
This would give us 21 berries from a bush in total.

Now you are making things harder for Jason.      Berries don't work like that, so it would require coding to implement that change.   Adjusting the replenish rate or spawn chance is much faster.

Two bushes = 12 berries.

Doubling the initial spawn rate for wild foods, including wild gooseberry bush, would have essentially the same result without all the extra hassle of introducing new berry growth mechanics.  Berry bushes would be more plentiful, but easily exhausted, like tiny red bananas.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

Let's be honest, both baskets and bags not decaying anymore were poor decisions made when Jason tried to satisfy us by making storage better but didn't exactly listen to us and threw his first "do you know how many years of game dev I have?"

which is fine, I guess we ARE a pain in the ass but didn't really fix the issue and created others. He might've killed have the playerbase when he first made things decay but he also perfectly nailed the feel that he was trying to capture for the game. Nothing lasts, right?

I get that this change is with the same philosophy and is much more minor than adding decay but like tarr said somewhere, it just kills rabbit farming. Slow rabbits are good, decaying clothes are good, hardship is good. The game shutting its content out after a few generations not so much. Nerfing should guide us into unused content in the sake of our survival, just like the heat update did.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

I remember the days before carrots. This game was so hard couldn't make it to my thirty's. Lost my town looking for food. It has gotten a lot easyer and lots of players are pampered.

I think the challenge of survival was what got me hooked in the first place.

We need a challenge for developed towns.
How about the plage or food rotting and making you slow if you eat it.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

Why not combine the two problems?

Too many food crops attract a horde of ravenous bunnies to eat all your carrots/berry bushes/cabbage/onions/tomatoes/wheat/etc ... stripping the land bare and empty behind their fluffy legions.

If only we had hunted more rabbits!   This diaster could have been prevented.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

My decay opinions:

TL;DR I think bones, seeds, beans, wheat and flour should not decay, and everything else edible should decay.

New objects will be required to make sure you get your arrows, skewers, plates and bowls back.

Personally I think baskets are annoying when they decay because they are containers.  If they survived as a "basket grave" like a corpse does then it would be less annoying.  However, the mechanisms for replenishing the town's basket supply aren't a super fun minigame sad  That could be tweaked.

Before you ask: I think the best way to deal with the flood of animal bones this would cause would be a new object "bones-only pile" with infinite, or near infinite, capacity.  Trash pits are currently underpowered.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

Food generally has no time to decay since it gets eaten pretty fast, but you want seeds to stick around forever?? God that'd be hell. People accidentally pick up seeds incredibly often and then dump them on the floor, which then takes a spot that cant be used until either someone picks it up or it decays. We don't have enough place to save all those seeds forever. Just put them in a bowl if you want to keep them.

With bones I see no reason to not let them decay. Why do you want to keep those around? They'd just be in the way or cause useless effort if you need to put them on a pile.

I agree with OP, everything should decay eventually.

Bones and seeds should definitely decay.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

Just lived in an Eve camp and we had tons and tons of food.

I made 10 plates personally(still wasn't enough IMO), and we managed to get lots of bread, pies, omelettes, and  turkey. No one was at risk of going hungry. Me and the other elders stood around trying to empty plates by feeding the young adults.

So right now there is never any danger of starving mostly due to the slow drain Jason added for steampocalypse, but even without the boost you're rarely in a situation where there isn't much food.

I think making everything organic decay would be a step in the right direction because it satisfies both:

-Not arbitrary - All organic matter decays in real life
-Adds a challenge, food production must become nearly constant to replace decaying food

I'm pretty sure the slow drain ended after like 8-12 hours of the recent Steam sale going live...?

Eve Whiskey, i.e. "Whisler".

Add zoom and hotkeys to the base game (see Hetuw mod) to improve the popularity of the game.

Really? drain still feels slow and I think bonus is still up to +4 from +2

Buckets are made from wood and rope.  Both organic products.    The wood will rot.   The rope will break.  Buckets shouldn't last forever.

Fancy clothing is made from balls of thread.  Balls of thread come from sheep.   That's organic too.   The threads would eventually wear out, get dirty and torn, fall apart into rag clothes.   Fancy clothing shouldn't last forever.

Bellows are made from rabbit hides and wood sticks ... etc etc.   I think you can see where I'm going with this.   But why stop there?   Everything crumbles and falls eventually.   Even a stone wall wouldn't last forever.

Nothing lasts forever.   Let it all die.

EVEN THIS THREAD.

Could be that's the case, but the slow drain was really slow at the time of the sale. I remember that distinctly, because I was wondering at the time how the dozen or so noobs running around in an Eve camp with no food weren't dying, then noticed my food bar was taking literally minutes to tick down a few boxes. The drain got a lot faster I think some 8-12h later, but maybe it's still not as fast as pre-sale.

Re: Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay.

It should be very dangerous to travel in the wilderness. Otherwise no matter how it's balanced, if Eve camps are at all possible, then you can walk around the map eating natural food and not growing anything yourself.
