Is the lineage server screwy again?
Check this out:
I was Kim in this game, and actually started a new camp that was possibly successful, but my niece got a last name somehow, and it connects her to a different family. Does this happen if you are named by a woman holding you who isn't your parent?

yes if someone hold you and name you, you get his family name if he has one, even if he is not a relative.

Family tree is fine. Your niece was adopted by someone in the other family which gave her a different last name than the original line. This used to be a lot more frequent when Eve chaining was a thing since Eves would pop in and either assimilate the family living in the town or the eves line would lose their last name and you'd have a bunch of what looked like one line but had nonrelated members.
It happened so frequently that people joked your family got Tarr'd when my lineages popped up and replaced the original family surname.
