Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

Well the return of apocalypse seems like the answer for a problem that just wasn't there (yet).

However complaining about it and it's mechanics now might be just as well... so I guess lets see how it turns out.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing yet -- it'll depend very much on how often people manage to trigger the apocalypse this time.  But...  Am I the only one who thinks it at least sounds really interesting to see what happens when the inhabitants of a big town suddenly find themselves surrounded by wilderness?  That seems like an interesting social experiment, and the interesting-social-experiment aspects are what attracted me to the game in the first place.

Seriously sucks if you've just got your Eve camp up and running and you have to start all over from scratch, though.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

Well, I’ve never really liked the apocalypse. The last time it was in the game, it was WAY too easy to activate, and I think there was one every few hours. It really took the fun out of trying to survive, for me and a lot of people.

This new one has a twenty-four hour timer, so the same lineage would have to survive overnight, which is pretty unlikely. They’d also have to have many groups of people along the way having the same ideas to trigger the apocalypse, while the last one only needed one person, one lifetime. Just mine yourself some gold and get a horse.

I like how complicated the new apocalypse is. How it requires a lot of sacrifice to even move onto the next level. But I don’t like how Eve camps can complete the first level — mainly because before, the apocalypse was, as Jason mentioned, the most “high tech” craftable item of its time. It was supposed to be more end-game.

But I’m excited to contribute to one. See one happen, hear the call sounds. Could get people cursed, though. That being said...

What happens to Donkey Town if someone activates the apocalypse? What if THEY activate it? Is it on the same server as the “regular” world and the tutorials?

Is there a reason a reason to prevent apocalypse tho? all Towns get lost eventually and now when you live to 60 as eve you can't respawn back in town

I feel like you are asking if there's even a reason to keep playing the game??  Or maybe that's just my whole reaction to this update seeping through.  There's no old towns to discover.  Bell meta is killed off, cause eve's won't spawn close to old towns anymore.  What's the point?  We're gonna do endless early Eve grinding.  Whoop-dee-doo.  <sigh>

I know Two Bell Berry Patch is still out there, even if it's been dead for nearly a week now.  Until that server gets wiped, I'll be fighting the Apocalypse every chance I get.

Either that or I'll quit the game.  I'm not sure which right now...

If I play the game and everything could end at any second, I don't wanna play. But if it's like "here live out your life, but no more kids!" I would be like, ok cool, sit around and say goodbye and chat for a while and then die. Cool.

I think you are missing a key change in this version of the apocalypse.  No one dies.  You instantly respawn at the same age in the new world.  It's the world that is wiped, not your character or lineage.

Semi-New player here, bought the game to play over Christmas after seeing some of Twisted's videos and have been playing a fair bit since. After reading through this thread, I do not even feel like playing anymore. What even? Similarly this is combination with griefers at almost EVERY single medium - large sized village makes the appeal of the game turn . very quickly in to frustration, hours of frustration.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

Server wiping is fine, it's just a matter of tuning to figure out how often.  Honestly eve chaining being lost is probably the bigger blow.  I think we're just being guinea pigs again xD  Nobody's actually caused an apocolypse anyways right?

Anyways, the One City server is going nicely if you just wanna derp around in big towns.  Only been up for a day and we've got a good town going and a massive one up north.

Honestly, the death of eve chaining was a bigger hit than the ability to have the chance of activating the apocalypse. I've probably spent 6-8 hours since the update attempting to put together a tier two (I'm not even at the point of looking at activating just trying to see the server wide warning) and we can't even get that far. Don't get me wrong, the six hours is a good thing in my eyes but being able to dismantle it so easy or just never seeing the village again kills any chance at seeing it.

What is dramatic about stacking some blocks? What is exciting about blind siding a baby loading into the game for a stone? Where is the reward for playing well?

My best memories of this game comes from the experiences I've had in the CITIES of the game not from the random families as they come and go within a blink.

I remember patrolling four cities with other members of the discord community to keep cursed players from wrecking the place.
I remember seeing all the bitching and suicides related to people being born in Trinity/Ivy
I remember all the murder/fighting/griefing of Ducks.
I remember how it felt to open my first locked door by teleportation in Seoul.
I remember the human zoo and trying to ungrief the doors around Goose Town with the help of others in the community.

I remember making 100 plate in Mango town and I remember Mango town changing over to Casino town due to all the painted buildings. All the fun of different subcity areas and all the Eve immigrants.
I remember trying to fling piglets through the walls of Uber Alles
I remember how upset Hitlerd made peope that they even went to the forums asking for Jason to do something about what people can write on the town signs.
I remember how magical it was to have a semi-functional school in School where adults would bring new children to a sort of learning area.

The point is a family name lasts a few generations, a city lasted what seemed like forever.

Tom, I wouldn't let words on the forum discourage you. First off, the apocalypse is never going to happen - at least not until Jason does something to restore some degree of city revisiting, or changes the apocalypse mechanism so that it can be worked on by multiple lineages, or removes the mandatory waiting periods (which I am certain he's not going to do).

Second, everyone here is making far too big a deal about the apocalypse. The problem with the first apocalypse was that people figured out how to make it happen every hour, which caught Jason off-guard. That wasn't what he intended, so he disabled it. The new apocalypse, assuming that it can happen at all (it can't), can happen at most once per day. I suspect that Jason's intention is that it happen much less frequently than that, and if it actually happens that often then he'll change things once again to slow it down. Having towns that last more than a few days hasn't happened in a long time - the glory days that Tarr wrote about above were from the early days of the game, back when Eves spawned close to each other and people could keep repopulating towns. So if you've only been playing recently, the apocalypse (which isn't going to happen) wouldn't change much even if it did happen (which it won't).

Personally, I think the idea of an apocalypse is an awesome addition to the game; Jason still has a lot of work to make it workable and worthwhile. The first one was a failure because it could be triggered at any time, quickly, over and over. This one will be a failure because it can't be triggered at all, due to a different issue that Jason still needs to grapple with (the inability of lineages to last more than roughly half a day, coupled with the inability to revisit dead cities). But this game is a work-in-progress - and will be up until the end - so Jason will figure out a way to make it good in due course of time.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

Tarr:

Idea A - Try building the Apocalypse in the tutorial area. You can always spawn there any time you like, and your previous spawn will be a very limited distance away and in a known direction. Hide the tower some distance away from your initial chamber so that it will be difficult for others to spawn into the tutorial and search for your tower. Use a non-blatant marker (a certain arrangement of stones, perhaps) that will be easy for you to spot but hard for others to notice so that you can quickly recognize which tutorial chamber was your initial one and thus navigate from there back to your tower.

You'll need to coordinate with another competent player so that you can both spawn into the tutorial at the same time, escape from your respective chambers, rendezvous, and stab one another to get the bloody knives. You only have to do that once if you get all the blocks made in the first go-around. Then every six hours you can redo the tutorial on your own. In fact, it doesn't even need to be a particularly competent player, since you can break them free once you escape.

Idea B - Get a few trusted people to curse you, just enough to get sent to Donkey Town. Build the Apocalypse there. Die quickly after assembling each new stage so that you can keep returning to Donkey Town at the six-hour marks without having to accumulate a lot of additional curses.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

I think the donkey town one wouldn't work:  getting sent to donkey town just adds 20k to your X and Y as an eve spawn, so it'll be much different place every time.

That tutorial idea is interesting, though, do the jason heads spawn there tho?

Unfortunately last I checked donkeys will always spawn far away from their camps due to the normal eve spiral pushing them out (minimum distance donkeys are from normal players is like 50k) so the cursing tactic will just end up me pushing from one spot to another without me being close to my old camp.

With the tutorial trick I think I end up getting screwed by how spawning into cell areas work. They might be "close" but while a lot of what you see is N + S there's western cells if you go out far enough. It would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack to track down whatever cells I was working at.

Though the more I think about it the tutorial option might be easier to trigger the apocalypse if you find a good area outside. Having all the resources needed to keep a village going at all times while skipping most of early game. Only issue is that if these civs are lost it's 100% gone vs a normal city which can potentially be found again.

I'm not sure there's any real "solo" tricks I can do to force an apocalypse without it being on a low pop server or waiting around for the eve spiral to dump people back into the specific villages I've set up with apocalypse rooms. I have access to a second account so getting a body to stab is easy if I needed it, the lack of eve chaining is what kills me being able to do much.

They'll spawn in the area but you'd have to probably go X units east and then start looking around for the heads. Like any of my successful tutorial lineages you end up having to just leave the area directly around the cells as they're incredibly inhospitable but not go far enough that no one will fail to find the tutorial. I'm not real sure how far my cells would be apart on the different six hour spawns but I feel like it would be too far to be reasonable.

I miss you showing up into towns already sad

Id always run to you as a baby (and annoy my mom rip) and say stuff like "hi tarr ily". I know that when I see you my life's gonna be fun - last ones I had with you were pretty memorable - I played as Woodley, Gio (two times, different surnames), Killian and Godwin. Im also the kid asking you If youre tarr when you don't pick your usual surname haha,,

Yesterday when you - by some miracle - spawned as eve into town, I was your first baby boy ! Thanks for showing me the apocalypse room, I made sure nobody got in it and I was a guard. Wish I was a girl tho so I could name my babies Ree.

I sign my ingame notes as Gio or Truz.

Re: It's that time of the year, apocalypse is back!

The ironie is until jason doesnt make a way to replace eve spawn in favor of big cities (faster road building, transporation, closer spawn etc) we will probably never have an apocalypse since towns eventually die out faster than we can make it

So by nerfing the eve spawn mechanic he actually prevented us from erasing all, which actually doesnt matter since if a town dies out its lost anyway unless you get really lucky and find it back from another village and spawn some kids but good luck with that

It would be nice if the apocalypse fixed the tundra snakes and other out of biome wildlife that has been worse since jungle biome has been added

If new players git gud enough it would actually be possible to make the apocalypse since the server always has enough players to sustain at least one big village, but noobs still die for stupid reasons atm and we need them to spawn smile

It was pretty funny, I was in Knight family, gen 16. The line died at 18 due to a toddler girl saying "brb". They had an apocalypse tower a bit out of the town, I noticed it as an adult. I was planning on taking the block off and running away with it, but left it as it was due to rather seeing the apocalypse first before sabotaging it.
Children born to the town would often /die. And someone brought a bear in too. I wonder if they even knew that this was an apocalypse town?? Were they trying to end the apocalypse town or were they regular old derps who didn't realize the ultimate griefing tool was right outside of the town? I'd imagine every kid would want to live there, to either destroy apocalypse tower or build it, but no. Bears, /dies... And a lineage ending to afking last girl. Wow. big_smile
It's dead now, and I guess that's good? As the apocalypse town is now a ghost town? It was a Knight II line from yesterday. The Eve did live to 60...

Yeah that was another one of my apocalypse bunkers. I've since stopped making them and playing. I thought when he was reintroducing the apocalypse it was going to be some difficult end of tech tree item that required crazy stuff like a diesel engine and other hard to make items. Instead we got something incredibly easy to collect with the only difficult part being can your lineage last long enough to see the end? (hint: It can't.) It took me one attempt to put up an apocalypse endbase in an Eve camp and one single attempt to collect all the endstones needed for the apocalypse while hiding them away from a town.

With all the changes what is the purpose of playing? You are playing a waiting game until the girls /die the lineage to death and that's their choice.
I'd rather him just remove the lineage ban on old age deaths to allow people who want city lives to keep playing in their cities just as players who like early game can just /die until they get what they want. I personally only ever started Eve chaining because of the lineage ban in the first place, if it wasn't there on old age you would be getting rewarded for good play vs wasting resources for a different cause of death.

What went from passing down an axe to your grandchildren became passing your hopes to the next family and now it's wait for rng to kill your dreams.

I think that's probably no so much ironic as deliberate.  He thought he was making the previous apocalypse trigger extremely hard, and it turned out to be pretty easy, at least for the sufficiently dedicated.  So now he's making it darned near impossible. I think that's what it's supposed to be.  It'll be really interesting to see if anyone ever manages it.

I am little surprised at this as well. Given that we just got machines an all I was picturing some sort of mechanical doomsday clock, not a voodoo-esque sacrifical totem. It's like 50 times harder to make a car than to bring about the end of the world, not having it compete with resources I can see, but making the difficulty artificial with the timers is really lame.

I'd have to agree with some points here. Every tech update goes further and further out, but a lot of recent updates have made it much harder to get to those points. Now with the Eve changes even a determined player willing to commit a few hours in a row can't experience any continuity at all. Personally I don't understand fully the war against towns. Why spend the time designing and implementing cars if 80% of your players never get to see them? I get that it should be challenging to succeed, and that going from an Eve to a civ should be no small feat. But this never ending running around struggling to stay afloat also gets boring.

I can't even imagine what people would create if they had the chance to. Full on cities with 3-4 lineages in them, each with their own home building. I want to see cities with stone walls around them, littered with plastered housing. Right now there is no point in even beginning projects like these. It will never last long enough and it would be too hard to find when it dies out. Seeing designs like pein's car workshop is really really cool, but then it becomes sad when the chances of a car actually coming out of one is so damn low.

I agree.
How many times can you start from the beginning?
Currently, there are no chances to build an advanced civilization.

If this game is to be RPG, please add some white magic too.
This is what I associate, the classic - the world is threatened with destruction, only the chosen one can prevent it.
However, this game was supposed to be something else?
