Rosie's weak old hands were shaking as she carefully operated the arrowhead from her brothers chest. It was almost out and she could finally close the wound. She didn't have much time and her brother had even less, so she had to hurry. This time, she will be successful.
She was always very interested in the arts of healing people. Pads soaked in blood, open knife wounds and the smell of fresh antivenom made her a little too excited. She loved healing people, the smile and relieve on their faces when she used her magic hands on their wounds and stitched them back together, but could be depressed for days after a loss of a patient.
It was her calling and she would constantly find herself near the medic station in her afterlife's, making sure that there were enough pads and needles and someone with the knowledge nearby.
Even though she had treated so many wounds successfully, from bear wounds to pit bull bites, she could never heal a snake bite or an arrow wound. Each time, she wasn't fast enough and each time, the patient passed away.
But destiny was about to give her one more chance to prove her skills and to become a better healer.
She was born to a mother called Simona in a very organised city, populated by the Nameless and the West Family. Named after her grandmother, Rosie sat quietly and still near the fire so her mother could feed the other kids next to her. She noticed a woman who came near the baby station and was talking about something. All she could hear and understand was "Test Subject ..... Snakebite .....".
She ran to the woman who she later found out was her aunt and offered herself as a test subject. She was happy to give her body for science and learn at the same time. Maybe she could finally learn how to heal a snakebite without any failures. And if she died, she died for a god cause.
Her aunt Aria seemed to be very pleased to have found someone and carried Rosie to the desert, home of those damn creatures that everyone feared. Along the way, they came across a boy who unfortunately stepped on one and was rushing back to the medic station. Still holding Rosie in her arms, aunt Aria rushed back home and started to treat the poor boy who cried for help. Rosie watched every move of her aunt closely, not blinking once so she wouldn't miss anything. But just as her aunt was sterilizing the knife, the boy sadly passed away.
So it was back to the original plan. Even though Rosie was now older and could hold her own berry bowl, Aria preferred to carry her to the snake spot and back, so they would be faster and the wound could be treated much quicker.
When the snake bit her, she felt a warm sensation running through her arm and then to her shoulder and chest. At first, it didn't hurt, it was like a mosquito bite but then she felt dizzy and had problems breathing. But she kept quiet. After all, it was for science.
Back home, her aunt managed to successfully inject the antivenom and Rosie finally understood how to treat a snake wound. She was very pleased with herself but her aunt was even happier. It seemed that she too tried to perfect her skills in healing. As thank you for Rosie's help, she gave her her seal coat, rabbit pants and shoes.
Test Subject One. That's what her aunt would from now on call her. And she didn't really mind. She was the first one who offered her help. The first one who survived.
In the following years, her aunt tried to convince new babies to offer their body for science but wasn't too pleased with Test Subject Two. After some failures, she didn't see the point to continue and wanted to test her new skills in a new environment and gave Rosie all her stuff before she slump down into a pile of bones. Weird. Rosie still had to determine this strange phenomena but for now she had other things to worry about.
In the city, there were some sightings of dogs and everyone knew that Pit Bulls will appear in no time. So she prepared some more pads and had her arrow ready in her backpack.
The following years she spend her time searching and hunting down Pit Bulls. But there were another issue with the beautiful city that Rosie loved so much. There were no babies being born. Rosie never gave birth to a child and her cousin only gave birth to a stillborn baby boy. Many of the women in town never had children of their own. The city was dying and so was the population.
But Rosie still had one more goal before she would lay her bones to rest. She still wanted to successfully heal an arrow wound. Something she always failed at.
It wasn't easy to find someone who was willing to be her first Test Subject One but her big brother John finally offered his help. They asked their cousin CJ if she could shoot him and she was willing to do so.
Her time has come. Now she really shouldn't fuck this up.
CJ shot the arrow right in her brothers chest and Rosie quickly started her work. Pulled out the arrow. Sterilized the knife to carefully extract the arrowhead. Took it gently out with her shaking old hands and pressed a pad on the wound to clean it and stop the bleeding. And then finally closed the wound with needle and thread.
She did it. Her brother smiled at her. "GG", he said with his crackling old mans voice. She finally managed to heal her first arrow wound! She even could heal Paco West who shortly after came with a snake bite.
Now she had all the healing knowledge. Now she was a real healer. She smiled, thankful for her aunt who didn't let her die. Thankful for her brother, CJ. Thankful for this life.
Test Subject One died happily at an respectful age of 60 years.
