Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

I mentioned three fairly simple changes that would exponentially improve the game here:
https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewt … p?id=10651

It's getting to a point where we may as well just fix the game ourselves.

I mostly just need someone who is familiar with the source, and knows where everything is, to walk me through the various files I need to edit.

I can do the coding myself, I just don't want to have to parse dozens of files to just make a few small changes.

This would all theoretically be done mid-late December after my term is over.

Yes, Steal Jason's game and improve it.

I think it's a good idea, Jason might not be happy though. Or maybe he'll finally admit he's abandoned the game.

Re: Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

Any ideas for how to ensure new players are funnelled into your new modded version instead of all hanging out on bs2?

In a way, yes. If I make basic changes (and make the game free) and everyone hops over, then Jason will have to accept the changes into the main game.

At that point, I would just close my server.

Forums, Discord, Phex etc

I'll probably just fix the biome restrictions and increase band size and wait.

If nobody jumps over then, contrary to possibility 1, I will have officially proven the player base is just a bunch of whiney brats and are not deserving of Jason's attention.

Re: Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

Idk if this will take off there is already a branch of OHOL - Two hours one life and it has very small player base even though there are no race restrictions and lots of more things to craft. It is more single player oriented.
Multiplayer games that are not popular stay unpopular cuz people don't like playing alone.
You need few hundreds people just to keep game alive 24/7 so your version will need something much better than vanilla OHOL or target different group of players.

The game is open source and always has been.  So, no, that wouldn't be stealing.

This post has been viewed 50 times (though admittedly a lot of those were probably me re-clicking)

The post

Race Restirctions Seem Like They are Against Multiplayer Survival by Spoonwood

has over 1000 views.

People will come to know the game exists and it's their choice if they want to switch over

2hol is a very different game, from what I can tell.

My goal is to fix the problems while changing as little as possible.

For example, I will remove race restrictions but I'm preserving that spirit of the game by increasing the distance between bands.

To be blunt, the game now is at best incomplete and at worst broken.

Think of it more like an OHOL remastered than a 2HOL sequel.

Spoonwood wrote:

To be more accurate: I would be stealing the player base, not the game

And, as I've mentioned, my goal is more of a hijacking job than a theft.

My only wish is to make the game more complete so that I can play a more complete version of the game.

I do not want to steal anything.

Re: Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

If you can code, create your own game, don't fork One Hour One Life.
Jason doesn't want you to use his art, if you fork and make it free to play he might sue you.
Something about trade marks
And yes 2HOL uses it but Jason allowed them to do so long ago.
What you suggest has been done before and it failed because only very few people joined the server.

Make your own game, make it better than One Hour One Life and put it on steam.

He's the one who made the game open source.  Though, he did threaten to sue the You Are Hope people a while back, there was no law suit in the end.

The game never has been trade marked in any sort of legal sense so far as I know.

There's a note by Mr. Rohrer on Github that no one can make money off of the game, but him.  But, I have no idea if him just writing that is sufficient for such to be legally enforceable.

If you have the time and money to make a brand new game from scratch, that is great.   Go for it.

But realistically, a fork of the existing game that fixes some of the worst issues while keeping the core intact is a much more attainable goal for the community.  Yes, the odds are against a new custom server surviving, especially right now when the main game is dying and the player base is drying up.    But if enough people like the idea and contribute to it, then there is hope that it will be able to succeed, even if Jason's version of OHOL dies out completely.

For example, the game SpaceStation 13 is a complex multiplayer game that was released in 2003 and abandoned by its developer three years later.   Thanks to community efforts, there are still multiple thriving SS13 servers, each catering to different audiences.  Hundreds of people play SS13 every day.  The game is still alive almost twenty years after it could have died because people cared enough to keep it going and make it better.

We could  do the same thing for OHOL.   But not if we give up  without even trying.

Re: Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

Could get a player base if you made it in a crossplay game like among us.

Give it away, then lure real players back to PC and Mac because, android gaming is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Then to make money just sell loot like special clothes or whatnot.

Jason says your can't make money selling his game, but not selling your artwork loot for his game.

Probably best to just avoid monetizing someone else's IP entirely if you want to avoid legal problems.

Re: Calling All Modders: Lets Fork OHOL

It would need more fixes then the biome restrictions to be interesting, like a better combat system for example.

If you want to know which files you need to change, look through Jasons github changes when he changed biome stuff.
The biome bands where one of the last changes. To remove biome restrictions you can change in server settings when they are activated so no need to program that.

I for my part have rewritten now together with the base from PX 80% of the server code in Haxe with mainly using Jasons protocol descriptions. The main change is it allows to use a hand drawn jpg to generate a map and it allows rivers and mountains.

It has also a server side Ai interface in case one wants to program some NPCs...

Bringing players to switch for sure is the hardest challenge, maybe there are more active in discord?

GTP-3 schould be able to fork spoonwood.

You can test it out in project december with giving the AI some of Spoons text.

Now I want to see a conversation between Spoonwood and AI Spoonwood on what Jason should do to improve OHOL.

I can only assume the argument would be epic and endlessly recursive.

The pineapple of logic would eventually win, Spoonwood is the real thing while AI spoonwood is just an imitation.

Any game where Spoonwood runs is an exercise in futility. The best strategy in such a game is to ignore Spoonwood. Even ignoring Spoonwood by running away isn't really possible in some games when Spoonwood has male children or knows your location, since Spoonwood gets into the cart when you run away. I played my family trying to get away from Spoonwood one game, but he ran before my wife could get into the cart. It was very frustrating for me to see the mover get picked up by Spoonwood.
