Things were bad enough after The Come Together Disaster were Eves would finding towns, and thus their family would not rebuild from scratch.

Things are arguably worse now, because of the iron system, which makes it impossible in enough cases for a family to rebuild from scratch if they are to survive say a few dozens of generation.

If you want some analysis and examples of how bad things are, read this Github report: https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/issues/691 .

I'd like to be able to say that the looters, and The Ginger Deliverers, are all a bunch of candy asses who fear rebuilding from scratch.  I mean, wouldn't that make sense for a game that is supposed to be about rebuilding from scratch?  Unfortunately, the system is kind of messed up that doing things such that a family *earns* their value by rebuilding from scratch, just isn't feasible in plenty of situations.

I read the report...

"Playing on a low pop server a few months ago, I tried once to get to an engine on just one iron vein. After the mine exhausted, I realized that I wouldn't make it. No doubt, in the larger population context, one iron vein wouldn't suffice to even make one engine for a family.

I've also scouted looking for at least two veins on low pop servers a few times. It requires at least 80 tiles of travel, even if born near a well site, and though I usually make the three primary tools first, my estimate is that I'd be lucky to have a found a spot with two veins by the time I'm 25. "

you know you can just upgrade the well right?

I've been playing server 1 with my gf for the past week. We're up to our third engine lol. I think you just need to learn the game more

My character always feels slow when walking around, I play this game with my gf who sits next to me and her game looks fine. Still don't know how to fix this..

This really needs to be changed. It's crazy because I'm being punished for their mistakes and carelessness.

This is exactly why I made this thread. The fundamental issue is that the weighting is all off. You could gain less/lose less from great grandchild than you do from your direct child/family.

#4 Re: Main Forum » Genetic Fitness Rework? » 2020-10-16 12:07:07

In fact, I propose that they have "Genetic Fitness" AND another score called "Productivity Points". E.G making an engine would give you lots of productivity points, whereas stealing one would give you no productivity points, but if it saves your family from dying it might be the key to saving your gene score. This also stops griefers, because if they arent being productive, they wont gain much productivity score.

#5 Re: Main Forum » Genetic Fitness Rework? » 2020-10-16 12:03:25

I disagree with this entirely. It's not about teamwork, it's about survival and how much work you put in to survive. Even if you're doing the "Dirty work" like stealing an engine from another town to save your town. This should in effect reward you. HOWEVER, it should be HIGH RISK as players from another town should be able to kill you easier. I think dogs should be able to work as guard dogs imo.

I think we get a nice amount of teamwork on cooking and furnace tasks. And delegation and division of labor still counts as teamwork to me. Having someone go prep stacks of kindling is a huge help for everyone, even if they never personally use the kindling and it's an individual task.

In his words, if I steal wood from another city and take it to my city, is it also a team effort?
Or an EVE that stays in a dead city to reestablish it?
is it also a team effort with the dead family?

So, should you give me the genetic points of the other family?

This not the logical

A teamwork is NOT based on using the wood that another player has cut

A team effort is cutting a tree between 2 players
If there is no teamwork, there should be no rewards

#6 Re: Main Forum » Genetic Fitness Rework? » 2020-10-15 01:00:14

Agreed. I think it needs to be more complex, as it also doesn't reward productivity that may not directly help ur closest relatives. e.g. if u spend all your life making an engine, or gathering sulpher, mining iron, or making clothes from rabbits.

What's your objection(s)?

Typically in video games, rewards, scores and prizes are earned through the effort of the player or a team of players

For example, in APEX Legends, a team of players unite the skills of each character / player to be victorious (there is a common goal)

In OHOL there is no teamwork, the players perform individual tasks for 60 minutes (most of the time for fun)

Surely some of you think that the challenge of the group is to survive ... but to survive is an individual and personal challenge, it is not a family challenge

In early camp, when there is no food, the most skilled players survive ...
the fate of the family is pure luck! ... if the last girl is a new player ... that family dies ... that simple

There is no team, no family ... Each player is independent and performs independent tasks

So ... why has a score been created where the survival of the family is so important?

Simple: it is another forced mechanic to encourage teamwork, just like skill boxes and racist skills

But ... as in any game, you can always take advantage of the defects of the game mechanics

In OHOL, you can dedicate some games to raise your genetic score by forcing the feeding of your closest relatives so that they do not die of hunger and chasing and watching them with pads and needles, like a babysitter so that they do not end up dead

this is the only thing that encourages the genetic punctuation of meme ...
and ... no this is not family work either

I agree. It should be easier to chase and find your child if it does a runner

I find it really irritating when I get to 55+ then spawn with loads of people who are sat afk, or griefing and then my score tanks.. I think people who don't care should be in one server, and "try-hards" should be able to enter a higher tier server.

What are your thoughts?

Why do you care about gene score?

Personally speaking, it feels a bit strange to have like 10+ maximum pips at the end of a life, but when I first played everyone had 4 pips maximum at 59, no matter what they did.  I'm not saying that having that many pips is bad for players or for me, but personally I don't have an interest in trying to maximize gene score for that reason.  Do you want to have a high gene score for having those extra pips at the end of life?

Gene score also affects leadership potential.  Do you want to be a leader?  Do you know who to listen to?  Can you handle all of the stations, farming, cooking, basic cooking and more advanced foods, basic blacksmithing, and also making an engine and oil rig?  Can you effectively get or give resources needed to make rubber also?  How are you on handling destructive players?  And how are you on town design overall?  How are you on teaching new players?  There's a lot to having the know how to be an effective leader in OHOL.  If you want to be a leader, you're going to have follow first, at least in some respects, and know who to listen to and when.

Gene score also affects Eve potential.  Do you want to play as Eve?  Have you scouted for appropriate spots with the current iron system?  Although it's by no means ideal, how are you at blacksmithing while raising babies?  Also, what if you play during a server restart and have like 15 children as Eve?

I can do all of the above. My main reason for saying this though is nothing to do with that, it's because genetic fitness is the only long-term progression mechanic, and for me as much as I love the game, I need a sense of progression to make my long hours of playing the game feel worthwhile.

I love the concept of a war, but it's unrealistic to expect it to happen much in this game. Within 1 hour it's hard to:

A) have a reason to go to war
B) get people on board
C) Have a big enough possy
D) get the gear for a war
E) travel to the enemy
F) kill enemies
G) bring loot home

again. Love the idea but there's 101 more "wipe mechanics" that would make more sense.

A) fight for resources, instead of 'trading' for them. people are hostile against outsiders anyways
B) no problem, recently I had 4 ppl with me on 'journey for war'.
C) posse should be removed
D) that's the best part! rn old families have unnatural need to satisfy their constant hunger. peope should instead make extra foods for army
E) that should be fixed. I was leader, had info about war, I though it was between us and some other fam. but there were 2 families with same last name.. game need command /peace /war, so you can know with whom you have peace/war
F) smile
G) yeah

Yeah I love the idea, but again I think the issue is arranging all of this within such a short timespan. Especially when you take away the childhood/elderly phases.

#10 Re: Main Forum » Genetic Fitness Rework? » 2020-10-12 17:33:54

I think it should be as simple as rewarding life more than punishing death. The issue now is I might have a family of 10 people that all live till sixty, I get 0.1-0.2 per person, then 1 great grandson dies and makes all that effort worthless.

Oh okay I think I get it now, you can crossplay. But how are new players supposed to learn if people aren't teaching them. Chances are pros would go on the high servers to keep gene score.

A) I doubt all high tier people would go to these servers, but the option should definitely be there.
B) There will still be players to teach them
C) Nobody taught me how to play the game and it was perfectly fine for me. Learning a game is the responsibility of the player and the development team for providing the correct resources, not that of the community.

Hi,

Currently getting really frustrated at the way genetic fitness works. Even if I work my ass off and make a huge difference to the base, all it takes is one scruffbag to make my whole life pointless. I think the formula needs reworking to weight some things lower/higher than others. Here's a great example:

https://gyazo.com/29161025033f0bf020f2d6c164f7222c

My great grand daughter died 30seconds in to the game, 2 minutes before I died of old age nowhere near me.. meanwhile I had set up the farm, smithed everything, got everybody food etc etc. A play this useless should not affect your score, especially when it's a "great granddaughter".

Since I first started playing this game, I've always thought that whilst rewards shouldn't be carried over from life to life (other than genetic fitness and what you produce for your town), an achievement system would give people a reason to keep playing this game for years to come. I LOVE OHOL, but there has to be some reason for me to stick around, other than the awesome content updates that Jason works so hard on. I need a sense of achievement, the feeling that my 250+ hours of game time have amounted to something. I'm sure many of you feel the same.

TLDR, I think an achievement system could only elevate the quality of this game. It wouldn't be too hard to develop, would be an additional system for future updates and game improvement, whilst simultaneously keeping the integrity of the game mode in tact.

I'd love to know what you think!

Hey everyone,

I have another great idea for the game.

Myself and I'm sure many other players enjoy starting a settlement from scratch. In fact, I'm certain that it's the reason many people purchase this game in the first place, and likely the reason the drop-off rate is so high (mentioned in a previous forum post by Jason).

Whilst this may not stick exactly to the 'secret formula' of OHOL, I would love if players had the option to spawn as an eve, or eve twins etc. I think it's a shame that many players don't get to enjoy this, or when they do for the first time, as they aren't used to it they die quickly and never get to try it again as their fitness level tanks. I think this would create a lot more competition, diversity and history within the world. IE, right now it's basically impossible for settlements to form alliances, enemies, or varied trading relationships with other settlements due to the low number of settlements out there.

I also believe it would reduce griefing. Whilst I'm not a griefer myself, I am guilty of being a "serial runaway", often spawning, grabbing some pies and running to set my own base up with my IRL gf. We have so much fun doing this and only do it because we rarely get chosen to be an eve (I'm currently hanging on between 51-55 genetic fitness, usually in top 10-30). If griefers get exiled from multiple villages, they should have no choice but to spawn as an eve - but the idea I'm presenting ensures that this isn't a "shortcut" to becoming an eve, like /die used to be, instead there's an option to become an eve, OR you are force to become an eve (if you're a hardcore griefer).

Another core reason why I think this is important is because it allows great content to be uploaded and shared online. This is the content people want to watch, this is the content that creates a competitive atmosphere within the community (who can create the most advanced settlement in only one hour?).

Let me know what you think, personally this would mean more to me than any other update and I think it would drastically improve player experience, player retention and even publicity.

Hey guys,

I've been in top 10 on my server multiple times (last week position #7) and I have a great idea for a future update on the game.

As food diversity is clearly an important factor in human survival, and OHOL, I think it would be fantastic if we could roll out a large-scale biodiversity update - increasing the range of crops found in the wild drastically.

If we did this, it would force players to have to make tough choices about which crops to crow and use their precious compost and water harvesting. This would reinforce the culture of trade between various settlements and open lots of doors for future updates.

What are your thoughts?
