Since the average for pregnancy would be forty seconds, perhaps at any time in the womb you could press enter to be born. A timer is displayed, and if you hit enter before 30 seconds or after 60, you die or injure the mother, or have some sort of disadvantage, like slowness or less tool slots. It'd allow for disabled people to be born based on birth circumstance, and give a reason to be born at an ideal time. I'd love to see more circumstantial development in characters, too. Being born earlier could make you skinnier, being born later, fatter. Your mother could affect these things too. Perhaps the more she eats while pregnant the more fat is added on at birth. Perhaps being born somewhere cold makes you a little fat? Opposite with hot? Lots of movement could get rid of fat and make you colder. Skinnier could equal faster but more food consumption and fatter could equal slower but less food consumption. I've always loved more in-depth games where unhealthy decisions could equal a terrible life. Your decisions should mean more to yourself and your children, rather than to your cousins or someone not very closely related. Also, perhaps as a fetus you could kick to indicate responses. Mothers could ask kids their preferences and kicking could be used as a yes-no indicator.

I just played a life where we bred tons of dogs- using our own resources of course. Made a pen, imported beagles & poodles, and went ham on it. We gave out pups to young kids, things like that. We ran what was essentially a free pet shop. It had me wishing we could do more with dogs.

-Leashes would make a wonderful but simple thing. Maybe you wouldn't always need to be holding your dog, and could lead them places, tie them up, things like that. Perhaps two lassos could make it? It'd be costly but make dogs much more fun to have, and cause a sense of belonging with the dog. I'd love to see dogs being traded.

-Naming dogs would also help create a sense of property. They'd have to be named as pups, and could probably have any name. Dogs could maybe come to their name?

-Dogs should be able to kill/scare off/detect dangerous predators. Perhaps barking at bears could be a feature? It'd greatly help unmodded users in avoiding danger. Due to dogs' high cost and demand for upkeep, I think it'd be cool and well deserved.

Books, leather, & more

Books! Some people like to tell stories on pages of paper, but it's near impossible to make sure they stay in their assorted order. Perhaps leather, which could provide another purpose for cows, just regular paper, or wood could create a cover. This could even give an opportunity for mapping books, where adventurers could mark down prestigious locations on maps within a book. This would be a lucky find for anyone able to happen across a multi-gen nomad family's old family mapbook. Turning the page should allow a new map to be seen, same with pages and their words. Perhaps paperback books could only hold 5 pages of either maps or writing, woodback boos could contain 10, and leatherback could contain 20-30.

Something to make animals more intricate/useful.
Pets with different skills, perhaps?
~ Cats could bring rabbits or mice, could be trained using fish, shrimp, rabbit, etc.
~ Dogs could hunt smaller animals, like geese or rabbits.
~ Monkeys could retrieve bananas, but you'd have to snatch it from them before they eat them

Maybe a vet profession, with scales, thermometers, stethoscopes, basic stats for animals which could change based on how well bred they are, etc., etc.. Illnesses that deformed animals can pass on to their keepers, other healthy livestock, etc.. Dogs & cats could have an 'obedience' stat that determines how easily trained their offspring are- things like that. There are different tasks that animals have the option of doing each move that could include an assortment of tricks, moving, eating, attacking, a certain task, etc. When you praise or give a treat to an animal that does a certain task, the percentage of them doing that task on their own, without being prompted, goes up. When given a treat, their bond with the treat-giver goes up, making it so they respond to commands easier, if it's from that player. However, it'll also up the percentage of the task they were doing less than a second ago. Now, with breeding. There are male and female animals, females will have a higher percentage chance of attacking, and males will bond easier. Their stats, genetic defects, etc., pass on to their offspring; with mutation chances of course. Sheep could turn darker or lighter, and when bred purely for black wool, their defects will probably be ignored. Or, without a veterinarian to make sure they're healthy and able to breed viable offspring, their stats decrease over the generations.

This could also help biome specialization and help further the process of trading! If the gingers can train a cat with high fat levels to fish, then trade it for rubber from a brown family, the cat would not do as well as it did in a cold environment as it will somewhere else. its offspring will have an affinity to fish and will be easier to train to do so, but if the browns were to continue breeding the lineage with their jungle cats, which have adapted to the heat and have low body fat levels, the lineage would slowly turn into jungle cats again, making the browns need more fish or shrimp, and thus need more snow cats. They, unfortunately, can't get into the tundra to train the cats for what they need, so they must trade again to get what they need. Blacks could breed faster horses, or show horses with fancy coat patterns. The browns could train monkeys to retrieve bananas. The whites, who wouldn't need to focus on a specific animal, could train dogs who hunt rabbits, or fast racing dogs with slimmer bodies, or large aggressive dogs who bite people with certain traits (based on percentages and such), or just people in general. They could be bred to be small and loud like chihuahuas, and I recommend getting rid of specific breeds altogether and to allow players to mold their own. Earlier dogs and pets (cats, monkeys), would of course need to be bred to fit domestication, and aggression levels would need to decrease generationally. Sheep could be raised to be slimmer and eat less, or be fatter and produce more meat. Or, they could be bred through generations to be slower, produce more wool, things of the such.

Veterinarians would be needed to ensure that the animals are suited for what they're bred for, they could be DNA tested with high-tech items, things of the such. A dog with a higher heartbeat rate would probably have babies with higher heartbeats than them, increasing the likelihood of seizures or panic attacks where they go into a frenzy and attack anything in sight. Things of the such. A vet with all types of equipment available to him/her would need to learn how to use it, and the results of it would have to be calculated by the vet themselves. Say, you put a stethoscope on a dog. They have to stay still, or be put under. The heartbeat plays as a sound for the person using the stethoscope on the dog, rather than it just being displayed. They have to either use experience and determine whether it's relatively close to what they consider to be the healthy heartbeat, or count and calculate the beats per minute. Of course, dogs would need to adapt to their environment, so a dog in a snowy ginger town would need to be fatter, their heart would have to beat slower, and they'd need a better sense of smell, and generally have to be specialized to their targeted environment. Wolves would vary in how they've grown up, but generally be the same, as they've lived in the rocky area their entire lives. Dogs would have set lifespans based on their genetics and such, and would breed with what's around them unless they're so wildly different they'd need to be artificially inseminated. This would cause a need for pens in the breeding process.

Same with the other animals! Don't want your cows breeding with random cows? Pen them up, get them a vet visit, and see which cow their genetics are suited to breeding with. There'd also be general diets that increase different things. Feeding your dogs mutton from a sheep bred to be fat? Your dog's gonna get fatter, and thus their children will generally be slightly fatter (and warmer!) than their ancestors.

TL;DR:
I want animals to be flexible. No set breeds, just something mold-able, trainable, with stats and spreadable diseases. This opens up a whole new world of late-game activities that further trade and mold each town's individuality. Bio-warfare can also be an option with wildly diseased and misbred animals. I want something that players have to do themselves that changes every time it's done, and is shaped by personal preference.

First, the pen design.

~Description~
-------------------
A small, regular fence pen with berry bushes on the corners (to allow easier food collection) is laid down by the carrot farm, then is surrounded by a wooden fence, corners covered. The top and bottom ends are turned to gates with short shafts, allowing easy access. The middle fence layer has two boxes drawn to it, which are placed at the bottom and top middle areas and secured. The wooden fence on the outside of the bottom box is turned to a gate and a layer of pits are dug on the outer border, not blocking the box's access. The lower box is filled with baskets, where dead sheep will be left to decay, or moved and buried via fence. The upper box stores four sheep-caring materials: Shears, spindle, knitting needles, and a stack of bowls to allow easier food collection. Sheep & whatever other animals needing securing are moved to the pen & require minimal work to continue upkeep.

Story time!

Darkness, then light. I was born, and it was terrible. No sheep, dead bushes all around. "You are Sofia Mills." I was confused; what's a sofia? I later discovered that that's me. As a young child, my mother ran, leaving me and my sister to fend for ourselves. I found the sheep pen, full of carcasses and made of nothing but a shaky fence. From then on, I decided to dedicate my life to that one task- remodeling. As time went on, I bore no children but one, who died as soon as I had her. My sister, on the other hand, had plentiful amounts and spent her time raising them. To begin my work at age three, I fixed up the current fences and cleaned out the old pen. I went out and collected branches and twigs, making a new, sturdier fence surrounding the one that'd broken down years prior. My sister was generous enough to find a small sheep and bring it to us, which was spoiled rotten, later getting slaughtered for the meat our family hadn't had in forever. After tinkering with more factors to improve my family's lives, I made gates. More gates. More points of access. I dug pits and put the fallen lambs to rest. Soon, I grew old and hardly had hair, but had a plentiful legacy. I never talked much, but I helped restore our sheep and rescue babies. My sister and I laid side by side by the town's nursery and reflected on our childhood. She took care of me, so in turn I took care of her children and her children's children, dressing them for generations to come.

The light's what startled me awake, what let me see my mother's face. Dull, dead. My mother was nothing more than a braindead vegetable. Crying, I looked around and found nobody over here, nobody over there. There's no point in crying now, I thought. Nobody will hear. I lay down next to my mother, going into what I thought was my eternal slumber.

I jumped as I felt something touch me. A wasp? A bear? My vision was still fuzzy. I looked up and could see only white. Wait- t'was a face! I felt around for anything to eat, and found a clump of something. Yum, this tastes nice? Once full, I looked up once more to see a beautiful, pale woman. She set me down and picked up her own boy, paler than she. "Let's find a good name for you, shall we?" Her voice was gentle and soothing. Being grabbed again, I heard "Your name is Fernando." That sounded nice.

Waddling with my new ma and my two pale brothers, I boasted my apron with the funny red mark and my soft fur loincloth. I gave my bag to my brother Alex, though. He needed it more than I. I asked my ma what I should become, and she told me being a nurse would fit me just right. She commended me for giving away my bag, which was a scarce article of clothing, and handed me hers. Off I go.

Nothing to do, nothing to see, I ran around, now as a young man nearing his eighteenth birthday. I'd had no nursing to do, so I'd began making a graveyard. Mother helped me every so often, pointing me to the skeletons laying around. Rows of 10 x 2 are what I organized them as- it made for a neat look. After years of this, there were no skeletons left to bury; everyone was young except for my mama and my biological aunties. I had to bury my second brother, and I hadn't seen my first, Alex, anywhere around. I began burying the bodies I found, and as I used the shovel more and more, my hand became steady. I learned how to keep my hand steady while using a knife to extract arrowheads from my beloved family. I learned how soft a touch should be when cleaning a wound. I learned the precise movements needed to sew a wound closed. As an expert, I was ready to face anything.

Old & crippled, my mama was just barely making it. She couldn't have had two years left. I was met by her smiling face while tending to the graveyard. "Son, my death song is playing. May I stay with you?" I let her know, of course, and decided to keep her company. We reminisced on our youth and laughed about the good times as she seemed to practically decay away. She stayed with me for less than two years, before gasping her final breath. "Goodbye, and thank you." I wished I had heard her say more. I buried her separate from the rest, and chiseled "Mother" onto it. I went miles to retrieve flowers for her. Her grave was much more than the rest, and I thought her worthy of it. I grabbed her clothes and gave it to the baby boys; the girls were spoiled enough.

Then came the great massacre. A bear wandered into town, hungry for flesh and craving our meat. I was bitten thrice but saved at least three young girls and a boy, no older than five. My biological nephew helped save the lives of many, and saved me all three times I was gravely wounded. I learned to use a bow, and though my hand was unsteady, I put an arrow into the bear. An old skilled archer, the blackest of skin tones, shot the third arrow into the bear with amazing accuracy and speed. After the harrowing ten years were over, I re-met my brother, Alex. We were both old, looking no better than shriveled grapes. We gathered a crowd and told them of our reunion, of our mother and our past. Their hardworking ancestors, how they lived in peace and built the grand town for us, how they fed their mothers and fathers so they could live on. Then, in front of the crowd, I, Fernando Merrrow, declared peace with my long-lost brother, Alex Rohrer. We made our way to the side of our mother's grave, and reminisced on our youth, and our family. Before long, I could see only what I'd seen once before; the light. The light I was born out of, and the light I'd go back to once my life left. As my brother took his last breath, so did I.

'Tis a thread to post suggestions and ideas for the game; Visualize what it could become and how it could improve. I'll start.

~ Family mechanics! I feel like the game isn't very family-oriented and too focused on the girls. Maybe there should be something added where males are vital to stick around too. Perhaps, five or so generations into a family, females have to be within a certain proximity of a male to have babies. At the moment people don't hesitate to throw away males and it might change that. Along with this, maybe some sort of marriage/relationship system would help enhance a player's experience. Here's what I was thinking:

~ Partnerships! If two people of any gender from any family get together and say something such as "Be my spouse" to one another, they'll be considered a couple. Once the game registers them as a couple, they can change their last name if both of them, when near one another, say something like "We are ___". This would change both of their last names and start a new family, or maybe just add the name they said onto both of their current last names and create a sub-family. Their children would also inherit their last name from whichever parent names them, and their kids will inherit the names too, unless the child gets married and gets a new name. If it's a lesbian relationship, both of their kids will have two mothers. Both of the duo will display as both of their kids' mother, or "stepmother"- something of the such. With gay relations, it'd be the same but with nieces and nephews. However, with a hetero relationship, being near each other gives some sort of a 'baby buff' where the woman has more babies, or a higher chance to, than usual when around the man. For the baby, the man will also be displayed as "Your Father" and affect his genetic score. The child would receive a player model of either of the parent's skin color, OR any color in-between. So a really white woman and a hella black man can have a brown, white, or black baby. A black woman and a brown man can't have a white baby. Things such as that.

(Partners can break up and cancel the current buffs, revert both of their names, etc. by saying something like "You are not my spouse.")

~ Arranged partnerships! Same as above, but as babies, parents can hold their children close to each other and say something like "This is your spouse", having the same effects as stated above once they're older. Their last names mix, and they're on both sides if a war starts. The children can't break up, but rather an elder has to break them up. This could help create a whole nother level of inter-family relations and serve as a community-recognized peace treaty.

~ The ability to adopt kids. There's always kids who run up to you after being abandoned. You could grab a straggler, and say "I adopt you". If the child says "Y" as in yes, you've adopted the kid. If it doesn't have a name and you name it, it becomes part of your, last name, affects gene score, the whole bundle.

I'm super into family stuff when it comes to games, it's hard to find one where raising em is meaningful. I love the game and would love it more if you could interact with players in a more meaningful way.

I fell in love with the town's daschund, Jerry, as a young girl. He was small, brown, and oh-so round. I talked to the elder of the humble town and learned how to get pups, just like my beloved Jerry, who was due to die soon. I thanked him, and at the age of five, made my way to the mountains with nothing but the clothing on my back and a single chunk of mutton and a berry in my bag. Six hundred north, three hundred east. Still no wolf- but behold! A wolf; well, four. I struggled for years to get a wolf isolated, then fed. At that point, I had a lovely baby boy waiting with me- my first child. He snatched a german shepherd puppy and we made our way to the nearest bell; an isolated town that anyone could tell was once rich with culture. We stayed there and I taught my four sons how to breed dogs, eventually ending up with beagles and german shepherds running all over. I proposed an idea to my only remaining son when I was nearing forty-five: What if we went back to my hometown? His name was German, and he agreed. He snatched up one of 12-ish german shepherd pups, and we were on our way. Upon arriving back in my late fifties, the puppy whom we named Sav died, and so had most of the townsfolk. There were only around 10 people left. I made my way to my siblings, said my goodbyes, and told my son my final wish: I wanted him to bring pigs and dogs to my beloved home town. I told him to continue my legacy, to keep my name- Annorah Troller- alive.

Star Freedman; A disastrous life

As a young girl, I was the unnoticed out of my siblings; I was always in the background. I spent my early life dying clothes for the citizens of the city, along with my twin. Amber and I were constantly glued at the hip; wherever I went, she went. One day, while we were making red and blue dresses after going on a long material trip, our cart was stolen by a man. My uncle, in fact. I ran after him to get my cart back, and watched him put it in a pen. Amber, my twin, shoved me into the pen, urging me to get our mordant back. Reluctantly, I took a step in, only to see the gate shut behind me. At this point, I was nearing twenty years of age, and was terrified. My uncle, Oluwadunmininu Freedman, declared me as his wife and tried to starve me. I ate without him noticing, as I had pies in my bag. Over the ten years following my kidnapping, I had three boys in the pen- two of which was a pair of twins. They all died of unknown disease. Amber stayed by the pen, keeping me in high spirits the entire time. On the twelfth year of my kidnapping, a crowd formed. I had had another boy, this time a survivor. As food ran low, so did my morale. I was talking to my son, when the gate opened briefly. I ran out and hid behind a wall of people with Free, my son, in tow. Amber was ready and took the opportunity. She lunged at him but missed with her knife. She passed it on to me, and I went for him. I missed and rather hit Thomas, someone who had stayed there with Amber for years while I was imprisoned. He died shortly after. My uncle grabbed a knife of his own and mistook my twin for me, and stabbed my beloved Amber. I watched as my sister died, reassuring her everything would be okay. He starved the moment he killed her. Three people dead, I dragged my son away and showed him around. It was hard to cope, I was paranoid about everything. I eventually took a basket when I was about 45 years, grabbed my uncle's corpse, and ran. I ran to a town far away and dumped him there. The people, luckily, took the old hag, me, in. I tended to their bushes, until I couldn't take it anymore at age 55. I ran to be with the wilderness; to explore what the world had to offer. I died a few years later, at a ripe old age.

"I was once young, and, boy, was I beautiful. I started out as a royal, being tended to day and night. I was dressed in the finest clothing available and fed every food possible. My mother, a poor woman, gave up everything she could to care for me- even going so far as letting me go. I was given pies and a knife to journey to the bell city, just 500-600 miles north-eastern of our humble village. As soon as I got there, the diversity was visible. There were at least twelve families there, all growing evermore.
As my 16th birthday approached, I had gotten familiar with my environment. I was a chef- and quite a good one. My sister, approaching 10 years, found our large city, that of which's population was decreasing. I taught her how to make pies and assigned her that lifelong task, which she excelled at. Though, she seemed to enjoy taking care of our children much more. I gave birth to three boys while in my thirties, one of which died near 4 years. Poor Chef. I'm not sure where my other two are now, but I can only hope they're safe. I baked pies and bread until I was nearing 45 years old, after which I decided the rest of my life would be dedicated to making fries, chips, and salsa. My last wish to my dear sister, Tina, is just to be buried by the kitchen which I spent my life in. I passed my clothing down to my son who decided to take my place as chef, and I gave my indigo dress to a young girl who seemed excited to have one of two in town. I hope she's doing well. I write this at the age of fifty-seven, to tell my tale; The tale of Tiana Dyke."

Rock- Papa, who kept me warm, fed me, and made me feel loved throughout my youth-filled years; I'm eternally grateful, and I'm glad you got to go out in a blaze of glory and laughter. Thank you for your guidance. I'll wear your clothing with pride.
And Mary, my baby. My youngest girl. My pride and joy, the only one who stayed in our home village. I loved you more than anything, but sadly you outlived your great papa by only five years. I wasn't able to help you when you were dying, and I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry for all the things I did wrong. I wish I was there more often. Thank you for everything.
To my other two children, Lamb and Skull. I hope you're doing okay. You left me, I wish you had stayed. I'm old now, on the brink of death, yet you're not here. I wish you'd come back for me. Your face would have lit up at the sight of your younger sister. I didn't get to see your entire lives, but I hope they were long and meaningful. I love you.
To my mother. You left me as a baby, but luckily my Papa took me in. I forgive you, and Papa taught me how to do that. Thank you for giving me a chance at life. I've lived such a good one, I hope you're proud.
I'm sending a picture of me with Mary and Papa's graves. I dug them myself. Please, write back. I'm tired."
