Just been with twins now and they're working hard I'm astounded to say. They weren't mine mind you or they'd have starved ![]()
Just had two kids, both completely new, they're off and running on some basics now like shepherding, farming etc. Others were helping them out too, nature of most of the community is to work together on the whole ![]()
Never had a good result with them so let them starve now and if there's a chance someone else will feed them I'll try and make sure they die swiftly in other ways. The only time I found them not to be deliberate griefers or complete clueless noobs they were RP'ers who just ran around with crowns spouting BS and not contributing. Shame, but there you go. Kill 'em on sight
Ask, ask, ask! I've rarely time to stop for attention seekers but someone who wants to learn anything gets my patience np!
TBH your behaviour was suspect. Your salt on here makes me think even moreso that the kill was definitely a smart move. I killed one earlier who was shouting that he was the guy we'd just had trying to grief and had returned. I was killed by another soon after but I was just happy he'd been removed again ![]()
Your attitude in game will determine how you are treated there. Some people don't tolerate anyone acting weird (like why take the file, leave at the smithy, otherwise legitimate questions will pop up) and will solve a problem before it gets a chance to exist.
gave us a family name of Alon, the family name was Alon.
I hope you didn't miss the opporunity to name one Muff.. Muff Alon ![]()
If you're typing it out 1 letter at a time you'll get F first obviously. Not a leap of faith to see that become the norm imo
I think to get the most out of OHOL we need to all strive for that perfect work life balance. I’ve tried in the past but I always get carried away with work or just end up doing nothing while saying dumb stuff to my fellow villagers. There has to be a good inbetween where you can develop relationships and get the most out of the social aspect of the game while still doing what it takes to keep the town running smoothly. Have any of you found this balance?
I have a pretty much set i stone early life where I make sure farming and composting is at least ticking over then I do whatever the mood takes me for the last 30 minutes or so. I think it's very much down to personal preference and mood at the time.. I'll alwys make sure I've put more into a settlement than I've taken out, at least in my opinion ![]()
I raised a kid who should die, but she did want to live so she follow me while I'm holding my other kid.
I accidentally named she "lucky".She talk to me and worked in farm, so I think I can trust her.
When she grew older I hand the knife to her, because I have my mission. She stabbed me immediately, then kill others after I die.
That is what happened yesterday.
Griefing is so easy in a game like this, far easier than being productive/a benefit to the settlement. Had one who grabbed a bow and picked up arrows very early in my last game. Said they wanted the bow for 'hunting' which is always a big clue a it is usually bollocks. Tried to take my knife as it was handed over also.. So wandered off, found bits i needed and made my own bow then shot her. Others agreed she was a disaster waiting to happen so no problems! Checked her lineage, 3 daughters before she dies, all left to starve..
Gut instinct can be wrong but when you've seen the various grief styles it's usually right.
Yours was unforseen and must have driven them crazy being productive until they could get hold of knife!
So many times I have a knife (or more because I haven't yet decided who to trust with the ones I just picked up) and someone will come along and try to give me another. It's kind of funny, and I don't mind being the town's knife dealer, but maybe, just maybe, if one person already has three knives in their bag, at least try to give it to someone else first. Also don't keep three knives in your bag if there are other hard working adults around!
If you accidentally give one of the four knives to a griefer, it's not the end of the world. Spread em around folks. Murder cooldown is a thing for a reason!
This. Find the hard workers, arm them. Many weapons will be in the hands of people trying to play the long game and see how far their lineage can go/ their settlement last. 5 with knives, maybe 1 griefs but that still leaves 3 - 4 to fight back ![]()
I wonder if this guide will mean less people chasing down the last remaining scraps of food and instead preparing the way for the future by composting and ensuring famines are left to noob camps. First priority is make sure the place can survive, then move on to making crowns and pretending you're something special in a game ![]()
Can we talk about twins/triplets/quads who went on to be productive members of society? All I ever see are horror stories, but if you manage to raise them, I personally haven't had too much trouble with multiples being griefers. I think the issue is them all standing on the same tile and not knowing which ones you've fed. One starves cause you missed picking it up, and they all peace out.
That's fine. I get it. But tell me your stories of multiples who made it through infancy and went on to help the town.
Here's mine: Tonight we had a set of quads who were born to a dying mother after a string of stabbings. I may or may not have been the last one to stab someone, so I was on murder cooldown feeling bad for these kids who had no mother to raise them. Luckily my cousin stepped up, and once I could interact with things again, I helped her feed them and brought her food so she could focus on picking each baby up one by one.
The quads, miraculously, survived that horrible ordeal. I gave one of them the only spare hat in town and called him the chosen one.
Now I'll admit that I don't have any amazing story about these boys, but they went on to be very productive. Helped the farms, brought seeds, didn't all quit when one died as a child. One of them helped me stop a griefer by nabbing her arrows and putting them in his backpack. I stabbed her. I don't normally stab that much in one life, but sometimes the stars just line up that way, you know?
Anyway, I gave chosen one my blue hat when I was old. He got killed by a boar as I was dying of old age. I saw him run past with red text: "Chosen one down!" he cried.
My last words? "Chosen one down, lol."
I'm glad we raised those boys. It was a fun life and they were fun to play with.
I just wanted to bring this up because so many people won't raise twins. I've quaded with streamers, and I like to think we know what we're doing when we spawn in. Just give us a chance if you have the resources to spare. I totally get it if you're an Eve though, really.
triplets today. Griefer trio 3 times seen. Just kill them and save aggro later
I'm very new to the game, joined late, maybe 15 hours in. I do not know what the game was like before the curse system was in place, but reading these forums it sounds like griefers used to be a much bigger problem than they are now. For me it is people with the attitude supported by I am Pharo in this thread that ruin the game, I probably will not continue to play it.
I have been killed without explanation several times for being new and clueless, or tasked with something so menial that I remain new and clueless ("your job is putting berries in bowls") I have learnt far more reading forums and watching let's play videos on youtube than anyone ever showed me in game.
It is because of people like I am Pharoah that I will feed cursed kids if the town I'm in is even a little bit draconian.
I learnt far more 'out of game' or just watching people in game too but then the comms system if you're not on voice is extremely limiting.. it is a very tough game because you are not just fighting the game for survival.. you're also fighting other people in many senses. Players in these environments tend to always react this way: you kill anything that could make survival any tougher. Seen it half a dozen times evolve this exact same way such as in Felucca in Ultima Online 20 years ago and again in shadowbane/darkfall communities. I actually prefer this type of game but it isn't for everyone. You complained you were tasked with putting berries in bowls, assumably for compost makers.. You could also be watering and reviving berry bushes, establishing and maintaining water sources, assisting on other farms such as stew (which will be nearby). I start every life the same as this, make sure the food base is strong, expand it as necessary, ensure it all ticks over smoothly. If you want to do something a bit different, learn how from videos or even the tutorial, for smithing, then just look for the weak point in the chains such as iron supply, hunting, farming, building - and get on it.
Oh and if you feed cursed babies you're marked too ![]()
Until that day comes and ppl learn that having weps around is good thing ima go on rampage.
Or just bake pies like i always do.
I always establish where there is at least a knife I can make or get hold of and tuck it in my backpack (also a first priority). I won't use it unless it is needed but I'll also make sure sheep excess are killed off and bread cut etc so it is not some prized possession, just a tool to do what is needed in the settlement or against those who earn it ![]()
I'm a big fan of having at least 4 or 5 armed productive people in every settlement

He's been pretty clear that he intends it remaining 'as is' so yes this is the game. My advice is plan to have a weapon of your own in your backpack or hidden behind a wall/tree etc as one of the first things you aim for and kill problem players as they occur without getting into an in depth discussion about why they do what they do.
I just paid for the game and downloaded the Windows file, but it won't start. My computer will extract the files from the download, but then nothing happens.
You need to launch it from the onehouronelife executable in the folder you extract it to
Born into Gen 8 you'd expect a flourishing settlement but this one was far from it. Thankfully had lots of smart kids who got milkweed up and running, wheat, milk and obviously soon butter. I located an Iron deposit NNE not far and passed the news on a few times before i died but just wanted to thank those who came as my kids for being sharp thinking and capable. Was looking like a good gen 6 camp instead of a gen 2 when I left
Do well kids!
hmrka wrote:Today I met two griefers. They were pretty typical, just the usual "haha new record killed all girls!!! xD u mad??" kind of stupid, But I though I'd make an account just to leave a message to them.
Joke's on them, the family still lives on. I was descended from that family but my mother was lost in the wilderness when she gave birth to me. She explained she was left in the wild by her mom, who'd died before they could get back to a larger town. She raised me old enough to grab things, then told me to find the town or to just settle at a good spot if I couldn't.
Found a nice spot on some desert, with a bunch of ponds near and a massive grassland. Set up a farm and had some kids, told them the story, let them decide whether to stay or journey in search of town. A couple stayed and survived.
They're on gen 18 now, I was gen 6. I think there's still some alive as well- they're part of the Bob Army atm haha. I think they had trouble with a killer but seem to have taken care of it. I hope they continue to thrive there.
Adapt and overcome, nice ![]()
Ifeanyichukwu, that would be my doing.
I was born to the Goda line, I forgot who I was but I was female.
It was terrible. There were so many people in the village all crowded around the berry farm talking while a few hard workers made compost and hauled water from afar.
Was in one of these last night. They would rather roleplay and be useless sponges than do anything constructive as they talk about being kings and queens lol. They will stay in the berries tens of minutes np and not lift a finger even as the bushes are dying around them as long as one still has berries! Always discernible by their 'crowns' and drama they are a true burden on any civ and even if they die from old age they manage to turn that into a problem doing so in the middle of high object areas causing more clutter.
I was told I was a 'princess' and that one of my Aunts had stolen my crown as it was dropped on the floor for me. I couldn't give a shit if you want me to wear a crown, I have zero interest in self appointed lords of the manor and if I do end up with a crown against my wishes it's going in the swamp
People who make the place succeed interest me and they'll get my backpack before I die as well as anything else including knives. Don't give a baby a backpack or it too might stash a knife in it in a few years and go on to cause real problems in a settlement's chances of success.
I get we all get a little sick of 'virtually working' at times but in a productive colony it doesn't feel like a chore at all and you can even take on roles that cover multiple bases like slaughtering sheep and being an 'on-call medic' at the same time, not to mention removing problem players from the gene pool and their crowns ![]()

This
When I was born, I thought my town was bustling with activity; so when my elderly mother told me we were the last ones in the village, I was pretty shook. It was down to the four of us: my mother; I; my little brother, Smith; and Ole, our second cousin. We all bonded over the fact that we were doomed to live childless lives and be the very last of our family. A bit grim, but it was something we all had in common.
Smith and Ole traveled east and west in search of viable women; I stayed by my berries, tending to them as I constantly prayed an Eve would spawn nearby. My brothers did not have any luck, unfortunately.
I passed away in the midst of a nice conversation between three brothers. Was definitely the most poetic life I've ever lived in this game. Hey brothers, where you at?
Had an almost identical life about a week back but we all stayed at the colony and prepped it for if and when someone else found it and just before we each died of old age an eve showed up with a daughter! One of my brother's at the very end said "we are blessed" and I know all three of us enjoyed setting the place up as heaven for the new eve even though our own line died out with us.
Ahh I was born as grandson to Abby and she made sure I was fed when mom turned out to be a little scatter brained. I had intended killing Abby when she was older as she was a typical attention seeking teen and they die the best with lots of screaming and swearing and she was kind of just fucking up the colony for a giggle after all, but it was late in my timezone and I didn't have the patience at that time of night so instead I left you to it. Black text is always a death sentence in my eyes anyway ![]()
Sounds like fun as the husband in that scenario though, your 'now dear that's enough' made me chuckle
Yum is a huge playability boost. Not having to continually be rushing for food (as evidenced above by Alleria) means you can just get on playing the other parts of the game or going on long treks into the wilderness to find lost settlements/new resources.
A town with lots of food variety is a joy to base out of.
Ok. Now I understand the whole story. During your farewell with my mother, one of my fleeing children was born. So I have not heard almost anything from your history. I considered you a griefer who murders everyone.
In spite of everything, I am worried about state of mind of more experienced players. It seems to me that they murder others without good reason - "because he does not do anything", "because there were too many people", "because he upset me".
In my opinion, only murder justifies the elimination of the evil unit from the game.
Anyways, I'm sorry for killing you. It looks like you wanted to protect others
It's fine, if I had lived there much longer there would be a hell of a lot of my former kids coming to cause trouble and wanting revenge, with me gone and everything ticking over nice in the village you had the best chance ![]()
