#176 Re: Main Forum » A way to punish trolls » 2018-03-12 21:17:33

A big problem with this idea (although I applaud the suggestion) is that it could be used to flag new players who simply do not know what they are doing yet and need mentoring, not punishment. We can't afford to scare away new players, or come this time next year there will be only a handful of us playing the game.

I tried to search the game files, but I don't really know where I am looking.

What is the benefit of reed skirts when it comes to staying warm, is there any? I ask this because I often will make reed skirts for my kids and I as a newly spawned Eve, so that we hopefully consume slightly less in the way of food while we are establishing camp. Am I just wasting resources? Or is this an ok short term strategy?

Without it I can't snare rabbit, I can't sew clothes... Its gg.

Also - the need for milkweed is horendous. You need 8 milkweeds just to start fire. 4 more to snare a rabbit. and 2 more for each clothinng piece. Oh, and Did I mention people making water pouches instead of clothes already?

This. Another problem with the carrot farming frenzy is that milkweed becomes an afterthought. If you are a large village on an established server, you need to have a milkweed plot...and for the love of all that is good and decent, please do not plant the milkweed intermingled with the carrots. I cannot tell you how many times I have accidentally picked non-fruiting milkweed by accident while trying to harvest carrots.

Awesome story, these are the kind of moments that make this game so special.

Unfortunately, most civs end in an overpopulated disaster, but the journey from conception to collapse is still a fun one.

#180 Re: Main Forum » Continuity of Life » 2018-03-12 08:19:56

Often enough, you will end up spawning back into the civ that you were in before. You can increase your odds by force closing the game until you respawn where you want to.

#181 Re: Main Forum » What we need is a leader! » 2018-03-12 07:46:59

Honestly, this is a major problem...with the composting system I do not have much time to mentor new players. I am busy frantically running to get reeds or find a bush with 4 berries, when I could be explaining the basics of things to newbies. Most people I have met still don't know how to compost, so I get stuck with the job in most villages. I try to teach others, but since it is multistep process that often involves scavenging for essentials, it is not an easy thing to teach.

I feel that each mother, or a mother of a mother should be able to assign a role to a child through some kind of formal method. Or at the very least, a well oiled village should have one person be the designated mentor as their sole job.

#182 Re: Main Forum » THE **NEW** OPTIMAL CARROT PLANTING (spoilers: it's 4 to 1) » 2018-03-12 05:01:57

True story. We had a nice setup with berries between each of our rows of carrots, composting was quick and convenient. I leave to fill up my water pouches, and in that one minute a woman had dug up all of the bushes. She claimed they were taking up space for more carrot production *facepalm*

#183 Re: Main Forum » Baby spawns » 2018-03-12 02:24:19

Yup, this happened to me tonight. My sisters and I inherited a nice working farm, but collectively we kept popping out kids and we overpopulated our area and most of us died. Myself and two others lived and reared the next generation, but I warned them they might have to migrate since the land was so decimated from overpopulation and a lack of resources.

#184 Re: Main Forum » Idea - Spirit Marker to find your way back in another life » 2018-03-12 02:20:35

I wonder if you were my kid, I played a game last night where I had two boys who survived and helped to build a nice camp. Unfortunately I got too old and never produced a viable girl.

At one point someone wheeled over a cart to us, but then they too died. Does this sound like the same situation you were in? smile

Btw... i like the idea of a spirit stick, especially if you are the last of your line.

I completely agree. I make it a thing to communicate in an RP way with my family members and give every baby a task. This makes everything run smoothly and lowers the amount of babies that run off or fuck things up.

Yes that is a huge problem. I hate when the only baby girl waddles away at camp and gets herself killed. If somebody named her, and showed her the ropes, hopefully she would be guilted into helping. I know I would have a hard time disobeying a mother who named me, nursed me and confided her trust into me.

Aside from eating, I am convinced that the most important thing in this game is family.

In order to grow a sustainable multi-generational village, it is absolutely vital to establish social connections with your children and camp members ASAP. I have noticed that in many of the camps that I have spawned in, nobody seems to talk to each other and everyone seems to be running around doing random things. Half the time people are working on the same task (ie. building a fire, when one of them should actually be trapping rabbits for instance). This causes long term sustainability issues that are difficult to overcome. Even when tasks are given, half the time people don't know how to do them and end up dying (wasting precious resources and time).

Every successful village/camp I have spawned into has a well established social hierarchy. You are given a name at birth, and everyone in these villages talks to one another by name. If you need help, your family is there to help you. This type of family environment also helps encourage people to conduct their roles with pride and to feel as though they are part of something special. I will never forget my Uncle Winston and Aunt Annie and how they taught me how to compost for the first time, when I was struggling to get the steps right. Neither will I forget the mother who put her wolf pelt on me and named me Wolfie, she taught me the ways of the smith, and I was able to eventually pass these ways onto another little girl who would become the new Wolfie jr.

I am sure that many of you who have logged a decent number of hours also have stories like this. The greatest experiences in this game come from being part of something that is bigger than just yourself. It is not about the composting, the water way-finding or the carrot farming...it is about the journey and working on these tasks with other great people.

There must be a bug with your game, since I am able to get on a server no problem.

Reach out to Jason,  and he can offer you tech support.

#188 Re: Main Forum » How do i join a game? » 2018-03-11 16:53:18

Usually servers 5, 6 or 7 are pretty open.

#189 Re: Main Forum » How do i join a game? » 2018-03-11 16:52:10

Copied from older discussions.

You can join new servers by changing 2 files in the settings folder:  useCustomServer - change the 0 to a 1

customServerAddress - change localhost to server#.onehouronelife.com # = the mainserver you want (with this map its 3 so server3.onehouronelife.com) if you want to play normally again just change the 1 back to a 0

#190 Re: Main Forum » Servers full » 2018-03-11 15:31:36

Hello insane hamster, I have not yet had this problem.

Do you have your server setting set to "localhost"? You can always try forcefully connecting to one of the higher numbered servers if need be, or try one of the private servers on this forum.

It use to be fun being a female before the patch, now its such a burden.
I mean before the patch I would literally raise all ten kids, and often when food was thin,
go live in the wild near bushes to raise the kids without hurting the town's supply.

But now, you literally get to pick one or two kids to let live, and the rest die.

Sucks from a game play aspect as the mom and as the new baby now.

The fun of being a mom has been sapped out of the game, as you can't raise you kids,
you have to constantly be working as they sit by the fire.

One big problem of this, is that often you spend all that time raising a child to adolescence, only to have them randomly die.

The worst is when you are nearing old age, and your last kid dies of hunger when there are plenty of carrots to be had.

#192 Re: Main Forum » Female/Male Imbalance » 2018-03-11 02:57:53

I see your point Baron, not many people do choose to save boys over girls, but I respectfully disagree. Women are valued more than men, but men have their worth.

My last spawn was a male, and I tended the farm, built fires and kilns, and sewed clothing together. I was able to do all of this because I had more free time available, and did not have to breastfeed children or stay near the fire constantly. I taught a younger boy to do the same before I self-exiled to conserve our food at age 56. Males do have value, it is up to villages and eves to utilize them to their fullest potential.

The only time a male is a very bad thing, is if he is the only surviving child of a village of eve. Even in this situation, the male can still work hard to build a camp for the next generation of eves.

#193 Re: Main Forum » Female/Male Imbalance » 2018-03-11 01:38:06

I am not sure that males are as big of a hindrance as people seem to think. They can be used as the workhorse class of a society, since you do not have to worry about nursing children or moving far away from camp as a male. Males make good trappers and hunters and they also are good gatherers of seed, water and soil for the farm. If a society has too many females, then it will also overpopulate much quicker.

The problem is that when a village starts to spawn tons of kids in short succession, some kids will inevitably be neglected and die. If the females are neglected, then this is not good at all for the village. There needs to be at least one female baby that is taken care of in each village to insure survival.

#195 Re: Main Forum » How often does your wild eve mother nurse you to adulthood? » 2018-03-10 22:37:59

I survived as a boy with my first feral eve mother, I helped her setup a camp and things were looking up for us.

Unfortunately, all of my sisters and brothers died randomly and left me stranded. I built the camp into a decent farm for future eves who might stumble through, I wish that I had been able to pass it to someone in my lifetime.

#196 Re: Main Forum » what happend to the server 3 map post? » 2018-03-10 22:33:52

My guess is that a feral eve ran way off the map, and started spawning children in a new area with a new camp.

Successive eves likely spawned in this same vicinity and ran even further into the wild unwittingly.

I read that some villages have guards for that kind of behavior, but i have never lived in such an organised utopia.

This reminds me of an idea I had last night. I think weapons should have some sort of animation. The reason  knives are crazy OP is because it's INSTANT. There needs to be a walk up-knife stab animation you have time to avoid. I'll add it to my suggestions list.

Indeed, if anything it should take multiple hits to kill...the first couple hits can take a few health bars, and the third could be fatal.

#198 Re: Main Forum » Server locations / show ping command » 2018-03-10 18:32:00

My guess is that they are all located in the same vicinity, since it is an indie game with a single dev.

With that being said, if you force spawn yourself on one of the higher numbered servers that generally have less people on them, you should not have too much lag. You could also try one of the private servers, I would imagine that at least one of them is setup by someone in Europe.

#199 Re: Main Forum » Chill out server » 2018-03-10 18:21:48

The server is a bit laggy this morning, my player got stuck when he was trying to cut down reeds in the marshy area to the left of town. Somebody might want to look for my body to recover the clothing and wheelbarrow.

#200 Re: Main Forum » [Suggestion] new forums » 2018-03-10 18:19:51

I love the idea, but when the time comes that this game might not have quite as strong of a player base, the forums might become a pretty desolate place if we have too many subforums.

The nice thing about having everything in one place is that it promotes a look of activity to people just joining the game and it fosters a sense community, if we spread it out too much then the forum might not have that same feel anymore. I have seen this happen with many forums that I have been a member of. With that being said, it couldn't hurt to spread out a little bit more and add a few new subforums, just no too many smile
