Are you really saying gingers should be even more overpowered?..
They already have snowcastles, total control of oil, salt(read kraut/tattoo/icecream/roses/candles), sealskins and gold...
Going to be honest all the shit that you said gingers have is irrelevant as fuck and has not even gotten to because everyone is in deep well tech. No one uses Snowcastles except for fishing, No one has gotten to Oil, Kraut is a yum food doesn't need to be made, ice cream might as well be deleted because its not even made at all, tatoo's still haven't seen it widespread or WANTED by everyone, roses what? only for fishing which not that many people do way better food alternatives, candles no one even gets to that tech or cares to make it. Sealskin is the only thing that's is "worth" in the biome and its still not worth as much as rubber which controls water/tech. Gold..... No ones cares about gold unless for bell towers which haven't been constructed.
So yes, I did manage to trade even with a language barrier it was sulfur for latex and palm. But after about two generations of it, My ENTIRE VILLAGE MIGRATED TO THE ONEIL TOWN. Its funny how i built way stones, maps to each of the villages tell them to trade come back to my home village, see that its empty go to the foreign village and suddenly realized that my whole town shifted to one spot. This was between Oneail and Suomela family names. This shows the ineffieciency with trade; No matter how much effort is put into trade Laziness will overcome families WILL merge if they know where each other are over a period of time. Also Ginger is completely useless early game and bring nothing to the table. Givee them something the other two Need! Pale and Ginger should be the same race to somewhat put them in equivalence with black or brown family. If Gingers/Pale could get oil and Speak ALL languages they would Actually have a bit more value than they have right now which is nothing.
Currently sitting at ten families with 75 people. Really? Some of these families are literally two people and theyre causing towns to spread farther and farther apart. eves need to spawn closer to each other and the eve churn rate needs to be reduced to allow families to develop and find each other.
I see with most of your changes you push for player led interactions i.e trade but I swear, I have never seen trade in this game that happened in my play time. I even TRIED to trade, the thing with ohol is its generational!! What happens after I die and im the trade dealer? It will just get lost, no one will do it and the village will die, I even tried to pass it on but it doesn't even last a generation after I die. Players will just maneuver around whatever your trying to force the meta to be. This change will just make eves try to find each other to stand a chance, there will be no trade, but multicultural towns. Your updates only make the game harder and more challenging, it never really encourages trade. Also in your proposal you think that two separate towns will "come" together and trade while staying in those two towns, that Will not happen, theyre just going to be multiracial their not going to trade when its more easier/ just to be in the same town.
In all my lives, our town couldn't even pass a population of 10. The problem is there's WAAAY to many families so in turn, it makes towns feel empty, like their no purpose. This also puts a dampening on productivity and scarcity because if there's only five people in a village nothing gets used for decades. Nothing gets done either just bots wandering around aimlessly because everythign seems pointless if its just them and their mom and sister.

Even when Jason was adding content after content number where still droping, guess Spoonwood isn't that right after all...
Your analysis is not correct. See that low point in the middle of December? See the middle of February also? Player count increased during that time period, with two rises (and one period of decline). Updates slightly before and during that time period were Black Gold (oil), Internal Combustion (cars), Yuletime (Christmas trees), two radio updates, and The Miracle of Flight (planes). See here for reference on the updates: https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Version_history
If you believed that Jason told you such, well, there wasn't reason to trust him, because increasing numbers has happened post steam release after and when Jason has released serious content updates.
OMG are you still talking about those ridiculously tiny spikes in players?
Are you blind or can you not see that the numbers are going down over time no matter what was done.
Doesn't matter if there is some tiny spikes every now and then, the numbers are going DOWN!!!
A 2 year old could see that the graph looks like mountains and not like waves from an ocean
See there is the original release mountain and the steam release mountain
Do you want me to draw it for you? Maybe il add a rainbow and a sun with a smile if you are nice
\
March he stopped adding content player base dropped significantly, he added rift, the drop was dramatic, the life limit, fence, and language all controversial updates mashed into one huge drop aswell. All of these were from changes not actual content lol
Thanks!
Here's a quote on this subject from a lost post:
If you believe that "the customer is always right" in this context, you are sorely mistaken. Which "customer"? There are 80,000 of them, with 80,000 preferences and opinions. There's only one game. This isn't a restaurant, where I can make a custom dish for each patron if I really want to. This isn't a service business. I mean, yeah, if the game's not working for someone, and I can't help them get it working, I give them a quick refund. In that sense, they are "always right."
But "customer service" doesn't mean changing the design to appease one customer. How could it? That's utter lunacy, no more tenable than changing a movie to appease one disgruntled audience member. Majority rule would be just as nonsensical. Audience, what color should Yoda be? A. Blue. B. Red. C. Green. D. Purple. No, Yoda is Green because Mr. Lucas wanted him to be green. If you don't like his color, well, good luck with that.
The only way forward is to keep audience feedback in mind as I decide what to do with the game. In the end, I must decide. That's the only sensible way for this to work. And feedback is just that: feedback. Not angry demands.
With that quote in mind, how did we get to this point?
And by "we," I don't mean the OHOL community, but the entire game industry and fanbase?
Many game developers are TERRIFIED of their own audience, and bend over backwards in a hopeless attempt to appease them. But of course, you can't please everyone. You change the game in a desperate attempt to keep one vocal minority happy, and another vocal minority pops up to take its place. The game gets worse as a result. Almost always.
You are all EXTREMELY lucky that I'm not scared of you. At all.
I know how this works. That is why OHOL gets better and better instead of worse and worse. I'm not running around trying to appease the next angry mob. There are times when the mob is right, obviously, but just as many times when they are dead wrong. It takes time to figure out which is which. Just because they are angry, that isn't a sure sign that something is horribly wrong with the game. They were angry when I removed infinite carrots back in March 2018....
But when did the audience acquire the terrible delusion that they were masters and the game developers slaves? Do you really believe that's the way that great games are made? Or great art in any medium? Which great game was made that way? I don't know of any.
Even with all of the experience that I have as a designer, when I give other designers advice about their games, my advice is ignored 75% of the time. I'm their lifelong friend and trusted, respected colleague, and even then, they usually don't listen to me. And very often, they are right not to listen to me, because I don't understand their game as well as they do, I don't share their vision, and so on.
So if the advice of a trusted, respected colleague and friend is ignored generally, where on earth did you get the idea that the demands of a random angry stranger on the internet must be obeyed?
Its funny because this is the EXACT REASON the poll system was implemented, to gain an opinion of what the players want. When i told you to use it in a previous thread, you said that you already know what people want. What??? Doesn't your hypocrisy show evident? The poll system is to find out what the players want and you havent been using it at all because you think you got things figured out. If you actually used the poll system to know what ALL the players want, we wouldn't have this content problem because it would be one of the highest requests for people who play regularly. A great game is made of of the opinions of many, not the opinion of one.
Lava wrote:The game was great when content was added, now its in the gutter and im out until something changes.
If a game needs constant content updates to keep being interesting, then it's not a good game...
Recent updates are here to achieve this change from "needing constant content" to being an interesting game full of possibilities wether content is added or not.
Right now the game is very linear, yes there's small variations between each life but mostly it resumes to "craft stuff to survive" you dont need communication, you dont need to make tough decisions, you dont need to care about others etc.
Any game that has not got any content for the past four months will be boring no matter what dodge, you wouldn't know this because your probably got on three or four times the past four months. All you do is suck Jasons dick and can not think freely at all. If you played the game you would know its boring rn. And wdym constant content updates are boring? who in the right mind told you that? The best games are the ones that have things constantly added to it such as Minecraft. This game is still VERY linear, probably more so than before. You ALWAYS spawn in a high tech village no matter what, everything is the same very linear. Atleast before their was variation in what period you spawned in on now everything is the same. You cant have a game with "full of possibilities" if their is nothing interesting to do content-wise everything is the same regardless. Content is needed desperately.
There were 23 developed wells in the last arc. That is clearly too many.
The whole point of this is to see what happens when water running out forces you to oil, and then what happens when oil runs out. Only 4 of those 23 had been upgraded to diesel, which means that there was LOADS of low-tech water still waiting to be harvested. And oil wasn't even close to running out. This was after something like 2-3 days.
After 2-3 days, you should definitely be depending on oil in order to get any water at all, and oil should be just starting to run out.
As for "delusional," wow, though, right? I mean, the game is so much better now than it was last year. Pretty weird that a delusional guy can pull it off...
Here's a post about this issue from way back in 2017, about a year before JK had ever even hear of OHOL:
http://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=63
It's a hard problem to solve in a persistent-world multiplayer context, which is why it has never been solved in a satisfying way in any persistent multiplayer game that I've seen. I'm trying to solve it, though. I've been thinking about it and working on this particular problem since 2017. Not giving up just yet.
Jason, no the game has become stagnant and in decline for these past four months. A concept you keep missing to understand about creating "the greatest game of all time" is that this criteria is judged by the actual players; not you. You can never admit to an error and your ego takes up the "16 years of game development." When your playerbase is not liking the way the games going, thats not a chance to keep doing your own things, your supposed to listen to them. You clearly havent and are going through this nihilistic phase ignoring any backlash scarcity has. I stopped playing the game 4-5 weeks ago because you lack a livid connection to your players. You totally disregard them and follow your own desires which will lead to your downfall. Hell why did you waste a week of content on a poll system if you already have everything figured out? You dont use it at all, You obviously don't care what we have to say, cause we're not game developers. IGN and other gaming companies don't develop games but still can rate games, Jason. you don't need to be a developer to knows what's wrong with the game. The only issue people had was that everything they worked on was gone in an instant; all you had to do was increase the time it took to cull but you decided a rift was the right decision for the game even though +20% of the (steam) player base left because of it. The game was great when content was added, now its in the gutter and im out until something changes.
Never understood wick burners as they never get used, they are a middle tech between the newcomer wells and engine wells but it's so inconsistent and flawed, that nobody makes oil before well engine, so they never get used.
Making engines is a lifetime work, but at least you can plan on iron cost.
Getting oil is random, so is more likely that multiple people got to try it, sometimes it needs 2 pips, sometimes it needs 5 or 7, even 9 pipes.
Now so many things can go wrong. Nobody helps on charcoal, kindling, nobody makes cisterns, it's a lot of stress to even start the process. If you don't finish the oil before you die, you might not find a kid who understands the process, the location of the tarry spot can get forgotten, the information about the started oil pump jack can get lost.I did the same thing as getting water usually means upgrading wells.
Engine well without oil is useless, and a sitting engine won't do anything, just creates an iron shortage. As you changed that we can get more iron, it makes sense that the first engine always goes to the iron mine. And experience shows that no engine will stay there. People steal it and install it on wells, often in other cities, random locations. On the 8 day arc there were 2 cities with multiple engine wells, without access to oil and road to tarry spot. People troll the few engine makers by ruining their work. Interacting with stuff you don't understand shouldn't be so easy. This is clearly a "don't do this" thing which was removed from game for most part. Also, the sheep shearing got changed so newbies won't ruin compost cycle. This can get people killed. It's already stressful when you try to make high tech with no help, no resources, no perquisites like kindling, cisterns, a whole life of focused work, and the success isn't guaranteed so it's very stressful, stuff like people making swords from the prepared rods, walking around with decoration knives and swords can annoy engine and oil makers to no end. I was often threatened by idiots to make them knives from limited iron, got rods stolen, got useless tools made from my steel bars. It's totally understandable if you just stab them to don't have to argue about things that should be clear as day. If you got no water, the least of your worry is to have a decoration sword on babies. Most often i recycle swords into pipes to get oil.
So yeah, requiring oil before installing engines, it's a clear logical step, and as no one does it right now, it should be enforced.
That would help on iron usage, as people could make kerosene then plan for a new engine and some shovels and hoes.Btw no building under 7x7 is decent enough to make work easier. So player FOV changes are needed for any room plans.
There is no reason locking away the water. Human body is 65% water and cant survive without it for more than a few days. The game has no thirst mechanic but most food needs water to produce. There is a bit of disadvantage using water on less effective foods like berry bushes instead of pies, but limiting water access has no use. And a water boi job would be a boring task to do. Also, charging money for water is not something you see IRL, nestlee trying to get ownership of the water is idiotic. America banning rain collection is idiotic. Free and clean water should be reachable everywhere, in Europe is quite normal that every restaurant or pub gives water for free. Generally filtering, piping and packaging has a cost only. Also in Germany beer is cheaper than lot of other countries have their water cost
I can see limiting water usage, or portioning it for people but i don't see water as main trading resource.
If you are in a situation where the town makes water inaccessible, and you need to beg for water to do work, 80% of players wouldn't work, the rest would just leave the city and find one where water can be accessed freely.
Jason doesn't give a shit. He relies on his predictions rather than actual experienced player feed back that's saying that engines can be stolen so easily. He doesn't understand that engines are never guarded by a fence and even if they are, they are taken by family themselves and put into other towns wells for the troll. Instead of making one easy solution of making Engine mines permanent he dilly dallies around the problem ignoring the fact THEY CAN STILL BE STOLEN WITH A FENCE.
Its so funny seeing Jason making changes to a game he doesn't even play. You still haven't changed the fact that engines are permanently gone after putting them into a car. You probably haven't even played a full sixty minute life yet. Don't make changes to a game based off "speculations". Spend one day playing your game continuedly instead of thinking you know what's wrong with the game and shit. You think your all that and ignore the people who actually play the game and their solutions.
If your not going to make Iron engine mines permanent, atleast allow us to deassemble cars that sit around in our village while were struggling to get iron.
IF your quading you can basically get a person banned for seven days. Twins should not be able to curse someone now to keep the system just and fair.
Can we get an indicator on how many curses our kids have? If I have a baby that's evil I wont know until he/she does malevolent things or kills someone which can really ruin a village would love a curse indicator.
I don't give a single fuck, if im forging and im trying to yum to be efficient, im going to eat the corn and the beans so I don't berry munch k?
Getting very challenging to manage to keep my village alive when setting up oil is impossible without a horse that can actually work. Adding anything to the horses cart renders it immobile so its practically useless without a fix.
That's why we went with century because a) we are not the best in English and b) we didn't know what else to use ^^ Also since the Arcs are not passing the 1000 years, what do you use then ?
Can I apply to be a reporter I'd love to work with you guys!
Can we not? These arcs are becoming less and less memorable because they keep getting even shorter. Our village wasn't even able to use our diesal pump. Do something but the arcs are getting shorter and shorter and if your whole point on making the rift was so that things weren't forgotten and culled, a bit hypocritical don't you think?
The thing about new content is that is it usually upping the tech tree. More advanced objects like newcomen and engines, oil and such. These things take time, coordination and community efforts. That is now much harder to approach with the state of the game and playerbase.
People are throwing out top end player counts, but how many are playing positively and how many negatively. I'd take 50 people with a few I'll doers over 90 with 10 or so people killing and not working.
New advanced tech getting added every couple weeks is not going to fix any of the problems. The ones that get bored and start killing people for kicks, and eventually start working with the groups of griefers, are not going to suddenly change habits when a new complicated tech item is added.
Think about how many people even knew how to make an engine when well tech got added. Do you really think players that got tired of farming berries, that did not want to challenge themselves to learn, stopped stabbing people because cameras got added?
Jason wanted to make a game that everyone had a place. Didn't matter if being told "I love you mom" made your day or drama from murdering the last female got you going. This is the bed he made, that we have to sleep in. I found another bed, as so many have as well.
It just hits doubly hard because the whole game ceases to function without players working together. This is why multiplayer only games are fraught with danger of collapsing if player attrition is too high. No matter how good the game is, if no one is playing it, it holds little to no value.
I strongly disagree we haven't had top tech tree content in a while and its getting boring. I've been circulating the same top tech tree content for the past three months, imagine how repetitive that is. New content would actually add something interesting so that veteran players actually stay and are not replaced by new players who will leave after they realize how toxic some of the playerbase is. We need content that's upping the tech tree because we have been in the longest content drought ever and frankly its getting boring for many experienced players. I don't see adding more content wont solve the problem I see the opposite. This game is desperate for more content.
