Wow, that's genuinely pretty cool.

#103 Re: Main Forum » The game trailer is misleading/outdated » 2019-08-12 20:28:40

He needs to update it with information about the rift and apocalypse at least. These are huge changes the the game that can't be overlooked.

#104 Re: Main Forum » Change my mind » 2019-08-08 19:31:52

I disagree. You don't know what that person is like irl, but when it's your family line vs theirs because your villages are nearby its better to make the first move to ensuring your survival. If you don't your town will eventually be the one dominated. I've never participated in one, but I understand why someone might.

My name was Edwina Williams, a male in the Williams village. Our village was located next to the top of the rift. We were a mixing pot of people, brown and white.

Yet somehow being so crowded we were still rich and had lots of unique foods and clothing. I think that was our downfall, being too complacent and proud of our riches to realize when things were going wrong.

In my young years I felt suffocated. The city was disorderly and crowded, skeletons old an new littered the ground. We had limited space inside the town's walls, so I took it upon myself to make change. Donned in my white sweater and trousers, my heavy wolf hat covering my scalp and worn rabbit fur shoes planted into the rocky Earth I began my life's work, carting bones outside the gate.

As my work continued and I grew older, I began to scavenge trinkets from the dead. I soon had myself a knife secured in my backpack and an ominous key I kept in the pocket of my trousers.  I never did find what the key was for, but I did find a lock blank that might've been related. Later, I passed on both of these treasures to those I deemed trustworthy (or people I thought would be the most interesting running around with a knife).

When I wasn't clearing away graves I repaired the fences, fed, and clothed abandoned children.

In my old age, my trusty cart breaking, I came across a young boy. I fed him nearby food and gave him clothes from the closet before dropping him off at the fire. He was very insistent on getting the medical apron, though I didn't think much of it.

Later, I saw the boy running around screaming at a woman I later learned was my sister. The woman had stolen the medical apron off of him, and he was livid. I chased after her and ordered her to give it back. The woman ignored our pleas, and so I grabbed the shaft of my knife and stabbed through her abdomen. Others gathered around, ready to take action against me. But with the boy's help, we explained the situation and the lad recovered his medical apron.

In my last days I found a woman who I had conversation with before. I gave her the key, and when asked what it was for, could not answer. I just told her to keep it close as one day it may be useful should she stumble upon a lock. To the boy I gave my knife, and told him if anyone tried to steal from him again to make good use of it. I knew it wouldn't end well, I just thought it was funny.

It was in these final moments that villagers started to crowd around me, the eldest in the village, asking me to say peace. I stood in front of a foreign woman and proudly declared "PEACE." As the official notification appeared on the screen, I took my last breath. Surrounded by friends, family, and one kid with anger issues and a knife.

I may not have done much, but my life remained fun and memorable nevertheless. A mediocre story made for an interesting life. Such is the beauty of OHOL.

I'm seeing tons of 2018 posts on my front page for some reason. Just wondering if they're like, mega-broken right now.

#108 Re: Main Forum » Just an amusing picture. » 2019-08-05 14:46:37

I was there! Back when it wasn't so... dead. Ye, we had tons of bearskins. Good times.

#109 Re: Main Forum » Fruit trees » 2019-08-05 14:45:22

God yes, so many new fruit recipes. Pies, cider, juice... this opens up so many possibilities. Maybe even a fruit salad. I hope Jason adds more fruit

#110 Re: Main Forum » I'm new to the forums :P » 2019-08-04 23:25:39

Tarr was a veteran player who was a big part of the community and quit recently. Jason added a monument to the game for Tarr that people can find, and currently players have added onto it and created a (sort-of?) garden in memory of Tarr

#111 Re: Main Forum » HEY PARTY PPL! » 2019-08-04 20:53:27

Cool idea, though I doubt anyone will care enough to do this. The most I can imagine is a piece of paper saying they don't accept strangers. Villages now all have their own great walls, its just not worth the risk to allow anyone but a baby into your city. Most people kill anyone even relatively close by and loot them, it's way easier than having to trust them.

#112 Re: Main Forum » Found Tarr Monument » 2019-08-04 20:44:01

I was there in my last life. Some people added red flowers, and there were two bears running around on either side. It was southwest of our gated village, and we has tons of bear skins from hunting down there. There were always bearskins because bears just kept showing up down there. We literally had a whole room full of bearskin rugs because it was so damn profitable. We also carted a lot of clothes back up north from there.

Yes, I see that the rift ends up with one family only.

The question:  WHY.

And if I removed the rift, but kept everything else, what would happen?

2-hour Eve window in an infinite wilderness.

Do you really think that 24 hours from now, we'd have more than one family?  I suspect that we'd get down to only one family, rift or no rift.

I will run that experiment soon.

And this is a huge problem that I've never heard any good answers to.

Just keep spawning more Eves is the way it has been solved for 15 months.  New families start all the time, so that's good, but there are no families that last more than 24 hours, almost ever, so that's bad.

Now at least we have a family lasting.... but it's only one family.  That's not good either.

Try playing your own game. If right after a reset you joined and played and hour or two and recorded it you'd have first-hand experience. And as long as you glance at discord or the forums every once in a while you'd get a pretty big picture. Have a friend play in another family and record that too.

I don't know WHY things aren't working, I'm not nearly invested enough. And a big portion of the playerbase are casual, they don't have the big picture. But I'm sure if I really put effort into it and participated in conversations and asked about things WHILE they were happening I'd be able to figure out why family A didn't survive but family B did.

Maybe use an alias on discord so you don't get swamped and can just chat like an average player about why town A doesn't have any iron anymore. But I feel like if you just played OHOL you'd start to see what we're talking about.

How mods can give unfair advantages
how griefing becomes annoying to deal with
how villages are doomed due to lack of resources.

And you wouldn't have to complain that the players aren't telling you all about problems when you can find them yourself.

#115 Re: Main Forum » Idea Suggestion: Stoning » 2019-07-30 17:11:05

Maybe it would take 5-20 stones. That way a group of quads can't stone someone, but villagers can.

Jason has said that he would not be adding babies in backpacks. But I refuse to give up, dammit.

Basically, the reasoning was that we should choose between the baby and the cart. This was supposed to be realistic or something...? Either way it completely fails because it tries to create a real world problem that doesn't exist.

I get that for a naked Eve running around in the jungle they should not be able to shove the baby in a basket and continue braving the wild world. But why should a woman, dressed in fancy clothing and living in the city be forced to leave her baby to waddle behind her because she's carrying a basket of [important material x]?

If I were to be walking home with a grocery bag and happened to stumble upon an infant, is my only option to drop my bag and leave the baby on the floor in order to call the police?

God, Jason. We have cars and planes and french fries. Do you honestly believe that at this point in the tech tree, where people are rich and food is plentiful, the only option is to choose to let your newborn baby walk behind you as you try to carry the cart back to camp?

You want us to migrate towards resources but give us no good way to carry children. Maybe even make it a baby carrier, a new back item that requires high tech. I do not care. Just give us someway to carry babies.Even the  ̶i̶n̶j̶u̶n̶s̶  Native Americans had ways to carry their children as they work. Having kids should not permanently take you out of the workforce! Right now OHOL mothers have to sit by the fire and constantly feed and watch their babies. With babies in backpacks they could work and carry the child without worrying.

Just throw us this bone. You get your rift, your 42 starving babies, mass graves and murder fests. Just give us this one thing. One thing the brave the rift with. Just. One.

And fix the vegetables already.

You have pretty bad people judgement. One was a killer, one was a troll.

#118 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion: Observation mode » 2019-07-29 15:44:41

I don't think that's possible. People would start observing families and playing God. Telling people through discord who the bad apples are and where to find the hidden knives. Though this sounds like a good thing, it's technically abusing mechanics and will majorly change the game. It'll be too easy when you know where all the resources are and who's bad and who's good. It's asking for trouble, and I don't think Jason is ready to deal with the gameplay completely changing like that..

#119 Re: Main Forum » Slave cages are the new griefing, personal property taking a sick turn » 2019-07-29 15:29:47

I feel (sort of?) guilty because last night I was on discord planning this with a few others. Didn't know they would actually do it lmao.

I'm going to take advantage of Jason actually responding to posts recently and throw some of my questions in

It's been a few rather calm weeks of bug fixes, new skins and sometimes no update at all (these are not complaints)

...and then the tsunami that is this recent update.

And up until now we haven't had much new content. Sure we got genetic fitness (another controversial update) but I've been waiting for something new for a bit. Some new tech to pretend I t͟o͟t͟a͟l͟l͟y͟ know how to build and spend way too long scouring for crafting references to finally get that feeling of accomplishment when I complete it.

Or maybe just a new mini-game type thing, like creating a dress feels like. Fill the bowl, add the carrot, feed the sheep, shear the sheep, rinse and repeat. It may be repetitive, but in boring towns it was always fun.

But where do we go from here? We have cars and planes and french fries but really... what's next? In my head I'm thinking that you'd come up with someway to make cities less tribal and more urban-like, but I can never really know what's going on in your head. Even if they're just random concepts, I'd really like some hints to get my imagination running.

And good luck with that rift thing, even when people despise the updates they end up mellowing out and start getting used to it (The apocalypse,  genetic fitness, temp overhaul..) . So I'm sure this'll blow over with some tweaks

Btw fix the salsa ingredients reeeee

So I took a few days off to do absolutely nothing, then I come back to OHOL and for some reason everyone's screeching. I checked the news but there's no update there so I'm in the dark. Someone catch me up on what  ̶t̶e̶r̶r̶i̶b̶l̶e̶   holy update lord Jason has bestowed on us that has the forums in such a mess
