I'm all for marriage being implemented as discussed above, however changing your last name should only be an option when marrying outside of your family.

Re: closely related incest perhaps a fizzle sound plays when you try marrying siblings or first cousins. Jason coded in a successful curse sound so checking coded variables associating a noise when they return a positive result has been done before.

It's really not the same thing as using a mod.
The same thing would be a mirror site or using the way back machine website that was delayed a week; not the main site delaying itself a week.

What kind of accomplishments do you want to personally achieve?
And what do you want to see others do?
What is that moment you hold your breath for when you spawn in?
I think it would be neat to discuss such a thing so we can work together to realize each others motivations and maybe help see them to fruition!

#105 Re: Main Forum » YES or NO: Crop diseases and nutrient deficenties » 2018-10-23 04:28:18

I think that could be neat, it would encourage more cisterns as farms cycle through areas not to close to wells.
In addition, I have to note that a fair few allergies and intolerances are somewhat caused by humans not walking barefoot across certain terrain any more. A branch of homeopathy has people use a small amount of parasitic worms that are found in abundance in natural land that our ancestors would've been subject to in excess; causing problems for them. However it came with the side effect of increase the immune system to resist certain things such as peanuts.
Perhaps in order to prevent early stage civilizations from having too many children who are allergic/intolerant they are exempt unless most of their life is spent with shoes on or on roads.

That would be kind of unrealistic though. Plants 'eat' nutrients from the soil. Planting a crop in a certain spot constantly without replenishing those nutrients would leave the land barren.

There are ways around this though. Some have planted in flood plains. Floods fertilize the soil every year. You can also intelligently alternate plants. Say plant #1 used nutrient A and releases nutrient B into the soil, and plant #2 uses nutrient B and releases nutrient A into the soil. Alternating between these two crops will allow you to go longer without adding some kind of fertilizer.

You're absolutely right. My thinking was more along the lines of, "how to gameify easier hoeing and thus growing for mass production" but if you were being realistic something you're talking about would be a neat way to give better yields.

#109 Re: Main Forum » handcuff idea » 2018-10-18 15:02:58

I dunno, I've been thrown into the brig on Space Station 13 enough times to know it's not horrible getting a time out in a multiplayer game, and so many other players can deal with >8 minutes punishment on that.

Could a compromise be a tether that allows you to move within a radius of 4 tiles while still having full actions within the 8tile^2 surrounding it?
That way, you can feed punished members by placing food down at the edge of their radius without getting stabbed, and they can surrender by putting their knife down before the timer ends. If they don't want to give up their knife, that opens them up for being cursed and killed.
As a bonus for disciplining them, anything they didn't make/harvest that isn't a clay bowl or food cannot be picked up for the following ten minutes. This in particular doesn't bother players who got griefed by someone putting them in time out, but for people who are problems it inhibits the damage they can do.

Hey Jason, I took the screen-shot after my brother died from starvation trying to empty a mine with me, dunno if I'm being sentimental or not but I think this image both tells a story that triggers immediate understanding while raising a few extra questions, and shows off the features of the game.
RIP
Dropbox seems to be pushing paying for using it these days, so here's a google drive link of the .tga if you want it.

#111 Re: Main Forum » Missed Connections » 2018-10-18 14:38:15

Hey, speaking of the Boops... One hour later I lead my brother, Momo Boop II to a mine I made, with a couple of horse and carts. If you see this, thanks for wanting to help, I'm sorry for whatever reason you got of your horse before you made it back to town... I found your horse before minutes before I found your remains, perhaps you died from starvation while you rode, perhaps you got off to chase a unicorn. I can't help but feel responsible. I rescued your horse, took your clothes back home and buried you. RIP brother.
RIP Momo

Had no idea that could happen, neat. If another family names you, does it list them as no relation or "adoptive mum"/"adoptive dad"?

Instead of trying to consolidate a fair bit of this feedback, I'll link back to the thread in the reddit post so if Jason looks at the suggestion on reddit he can consider all this - after all it's some pretty nice feedback, so thanks guys.

#119 Re: Main Forum » "Give me your knives I am protector" » 2018-10-16 00:15:48

I really dislike setting out on my interests for the round and then people telling me I seem to know what I'm doing and work hard followed by throwing a knife/crown down for me roll

Having said that, there is certainly a caliber that are worth handing over such things, and with only one hour to find them, you have to be a pretty decent judge of character and on top of that a lot of people who get crowns just continue with what they're doing anyway. I've been guilty of doing that before kind of ashamedly putting the crown down by the fire for someone to take over sometimes.

I just had a round where I turned down the crown my aunt tried to give me due to helping build a road out of the city to setup a well - and that would minimize my time ruling/protecting the city. However my mother also nominated me so I reluctantly delegated the task to another player. That was actually one of the best rounds I played as with a clear goal passed down by my elders I could tour the city to delegate workers so that the project could be facilitated easily. Walking up to people and asking, "Hey ____, are you busy?" was eye-opening as to how a crowned person can redirect the energies of the city to accomplish things on a big scale. It's kinda funny how you get nine rounds with no ruler effecting your life and then occasionally someone being the "protector" is worth both your and the city's time.

There is certainly an epidemic going around lately of mothers juggling babies rapidly, then crying out "I'm so fucking hungry!" before eating stored food.
I have tried many many times to try and explain why I run away as the mother reaches for me despite my 90% full hunger bar.

Many mothers insist that it's okay, there's a lot of stew/pies nearby. I understand that your society is thriving right now, I really do. But consider how much longer those great food items would last if you didn't eat just under half of them over the space of two minutes. In addition - consider if all mothers followed that rule of thumb. This takes a tonne of workload off of the bakers and chefs, which allows them to pursue a secondary passion project or help with your work!

The rest of the mothers I try to explain this to seem to be new mothers, panicking that their baby will starve as they type F, so they seem to want to be as preventative as possible. To be fair, when I tell some mums, "No don't pick up, I will say F when hungry" they reply that sometimes babies don't even say F. But this is the thing! If you always remind your baby to say F when hungry after you greet, name them and ask if they're new if they still die you did what you could. If we as a community are firm about the F practice then it'll cull the behaviour of expecting to be picked up four times over the next two minutes which causes people thinking they don't need to say F.

I find the best thing to do is to explain the F rule while holding the baby, and doing such while standing on a perfectly warm tile. You actually get a lot of time standing at perfect temperature, so an explanation is not a burden, and if you really need to dash off to get some food for yourself, your baby will last a long time after you leave. When you return, wait for it to say F so you, too have a full bully for longer, allowing for you to give the lay of the land as well if you wish, or allocate it a job and ask if it's new... Possiblities are endless if you don't rush around trying to feed your baby constantly while tending to your job.

Edit: I understand not everyone uses the forums, and in particular the second kind of mother may not have even made a forum account. But if the forum goers start communicating this, then the rest will follow. Lead by example and all that.

"Disgusting", "Ugly", "Trash" and other insults are also not in the name and that makes me sad. I understand why, but just imagine people trying to legitimately get your attention by saying "Hey Ugly!"
Trying to call my babies things like this only poisons them against me once they get assigned a friendlier name. I wonder why...

Some suggestions to make "accidentally starving" less common and frustrating:
- If you click to pick up food while holding something you will drop it on any free adjacent tile
- Grabbing berries from a bush should cause you to drop what you are holding, just as if you were picking it up from the ground

Dunno about these, in cluttered areas the item you're using could end up teleporting a fair distance, and the value of eating your food may be halved by the time you find your item again. In cities in particular, this could end up straight up deleting your item if people aren't being smart about where they keep their items.

Being able to "drop" an item on a berry bush tile is prone to making a slippery slope and I can imagine a lot of berry gobblers accidentally holding wheat seeds running off after they got their fix, followed by someone coming by (also nearly dying from starvation) clicking on the bush only to pick up a wheat seed. That'd perpetuate double clicking on berry bushes which wastes the resource twice as fast when there's nothing dropped on them.

#124 Re: Main Forum » Road Construction » 2018-10-15 18:35:17

Good perspective people, I spawned into a town where I laid down its more southern road, and applied the advice you guys dispensed to improve it and I am a lot happier adding a few stops, especially since I left gaps with no wooden floor which another player seemed to take as a lack of resources not intended design because they filled them in with more stone road.

A follow up question with all that in mind, I agree putting unnecessary roads in the middle is annoying and counter-intuitive. However, eventually the city limits will naturally expand a bit. Once that begins happening, would the best way to accommodate that be to essentially make concentric rings of road that never intersect rippling outwards, with a "main path" wooden floor connecting the outer rings to the middle circle?
Secondly, it's far more economic to leave notes than to make signs for your typical diversion road. Perhaps people interested in indicating notes are giving directions can "authenticate" themselves by putting down a rose bush, like a signature?
Finally, I did a test run of putting berry bushes on a highway to a mine someone made before I started this thread, but what ended up happening after I spawned back in that settlement is that of course, composting and watering them wasn't a worry for most as they were all dead. Should setting up a picnic area include setting up plants and bowls for making compost and a bucket of water alongside a courtesy note asking to maintain the plants when refueling your hunger?

#125 Re: Main Forum » Steam page is live » 2018-10-15 06:14:19

Fair enough. It's about as early access as Path of Exile for instance.
Big plus is you don't get cynics of games tagged as early access withholding their money for a few months waiting for it to come out, only for Jason to stop developing it at the end of the planned two years and marking it as "finished" and then the player base experiences entropy at an increased rate because of the updates ending.
