Born as Applewhite.
Early ginger town, Deep well running low.
Had pig and cow but no milk or carnitas.
21 berry bushes. No berries on them, all 21 Vigorous, cooldowns ticking to produce more though.
We had enough food, stews and pies.

A man Starts soiling the area over the berries. Guess what he would plant...MORE Berries of course cause all the others are in cooldown and there is no berry for the berry munchers to eat. I Quickly grab a corn, make Kernels and as the man tiles the 12-row of soil, I spam all the rows with corn!
12 planted corn Tiles! food for ages!
He was mad, and I was happy!
Milk, butter, popcorn and carnitas will feed this village and the berry munchers will evolve or die.

In which way we could force the berry munchers to stop eating berries? I don't care about efficiency just force them to change their habit and efficiency will come later.
The Goal is for the berry munchers to Evolve or Die.

It is hard to resist the dark side. You are right: from one perspective you are a griefer, from another he is the griefer. Mission accomplished for Jason, drama ensues.

You mean that the whole village cursed someone with zero evidence or facts? Even then, said person doesn´t have any power other than convincing others to curse someone else. The ones that hold the power are the ones that curse not the one that convinced them.

Meh at this point there is a lot both parties are just not sharing and tbh I don´t really care.

I do hate 2 things:

1) The stupid idea that property fences with ownership gates are bad on itself, "property is theft" as the picture claims is just silly. Lack of property and control over goods is why the game fails to begin with, we could literally have towns alive for weeks resource wise if we used them in a smart way. But no fug it, we get to be lemmings moving constantly west because some idiot keeps making berry patches and watering them. And if you try to stop them or take down the berries you become a griefer. Same goes with carrots. Property fences are badly designed, but property is not bad. I hope some day it works.

2) This is more of a personal thing, but I hate the friend advocate role. In this case it is clear the the person involved is not Slinky in first instance, so she hardly has the full picture. I hate this. If you are going to get into an argument, grow some balls and get yourself in or let it go. Don´t send your bbf to make some drama while you stay quiet on the corner. Nothing against you Slinky, I just find distasteful the lack of commitment with the situation. Thats like preteen kind of drama.

Coconut is right, yum is op. Just top making 4 3x3 berry patches everywhere, thats literally griefing.

Even with low tier/complexity foods (berry, berry bowl, carrot, green beans, corn, popcorn, stew, potato, onion, bread, milk, skim milk, butter bread, rabbit, turkey, broth, carrot pie, rabbit pie, carrot rabbit pie, mutton, mutton pie, carnitas, burrito, omelette, goose) you get over 20 yum. With a knife and buckets. If you use a pouch you get x2 from liquids.

There is enough time to get to file anyways, and if you add 3 wild foods (onion, root and carrot) you can pass 30 yum. Just keep carrot and berry restricted to one bite per life.

If you nerf every food down to 1 pip per bite you still get an average of +8 for each at 16 yum.

What could have happened....

- Hey I don´t like your fence why are you hoarding all that stuff?
- I´m trying to make tacos for everyone.
- Welp I guess it´s ok then.

What I read that happened:

- This asshole is hoarding stuff in a fence PROPERTY IS THEFT HUMPA LUMPA!!! give me that cart!!! Slinky you are a pro tell everyone to curse and kill him!!!
- Dude stop stealing my stuff i´m trying to make something for everyone, you are an idiot *curse*
- NOO everything is FOR THE TOWN, I´ve been making food all this time, nothing is yours (everything´s mine? lol) I decide you are a griefer because you play with property fences!!! let´s kill him. *mass curses everywhere*

Is that an accurate description?

#109 Re: Main Forum » Eve Butts » 2020-04-24 05:31:33

Eve Cheater and Eve Revenaugh got horses fairly quick. They started running around, Revenaugh just counted his babies while they died, Tarr went north east with some tools I guess, using a ghost costume. On the south west side Eve Crappel was randomly raising some of her babies while refusing others, she rejected me once then for some reason 5 minutes later tried to raise me (she was super noob and died from a wolf after she picked me up). I run east to get feed by my brother and sister. We had no well site no tools no nothing, my brother Crash started doing some gathering. I figured we were dead unless we managed to a)get food and b)make a well. I decided against my own preference and run north east inmediatly to one of the old towns (about 500 tiles). I got back around 20 or so with a horsecart full of tools, a few backpacks and a stew. My brother had already made the well site so I just picked the loose iron and made another couple of runs for everything that seemed interesting from the empty towns. I tried to raise a few kids but I wasn´t the best mom.

According to OneMap, the tutorial cells start at (5400000, 0) and go north to (5400000, 10400). Each tutorial cell is 40 tiles north or south of another one, along the y-axis.

10400/40 = 260, so there are 260 tutorial cells, which makes sense because the capacity of bigserver2 is 260 players. http://onehouronelife.com/reflector/ser … ion=report
I guess there are enough tutorial cells in case the server reaches max capacity from everyone playing the tutorial.

Just to clarify, new cells spawn on top of old unused cells, right? (the game doesn't generate new cells above the existing block) I assume this because there are exactly 260 cells. I hope so, because it would be very hard to make a bell tower if new tutorial cells kept spawning north. You would spawn further and further away from the bell tower camp.

That makes sense. Maybe the algorithm changed but I think at some point the whole column gets moved east.

I will try this. Seems like a good idea. Thank you!

I don´t know the full pattern, but I do know the tutorial cells are currently going north (they used to go north or south I never figured out why). I also know they start overlapping with the old ones (those with cracked walls). They whole column also used to shift east and west by a sizable distance 100k maybe. I used to play tutorial runs exclusively in this game, going from cell to cell teaching noobs. I never rode the full column north south though.

#112 Re: Main Forum » Tutorial (not suggestion about how to change it) » 2020-04-23 07:38:03

bonus track:

- Nowways you only need a pickaxe to break the adobe wall, no more stinky axe/shovel combo.

- If you know about the game you can get a horse in one life, move north to the end of the tutorial cells and get it back once you come back in a second tutorial run (don´t leave it close to the old cells or inside, tutorial cells set a layout over the map and delete everything inside. You can´t leave yourself anything inside a cell once it renews but you can leave anything outside on the map).

- Tutorial cells are created over the map before the player joins, always on an existing place (those cracked tutorial cells are old cells). If you run towards the last active cell and go into the next cracked cell at the begining and break with a pickaxe you can literally see the next player pop out of nowhere in his starting spot.

- Each server has its separated tutorial zone, made exactly under the same layout.

- You don´t need a froe while plying tutorial runs, just use the boxes inside or make an adze and break the floor close to the snow area (you can get gold there and make a crown too)

- You can get to horse with your 6 iron: hammer/axe/shovel to get out, get goose, chisel, adze, file and recycle chisel to get blade and knife. Get goose and sheep from the outside, make fence get carrot lasso and ride. You can recycle the knife for saw.

Something that keeps the hot coals working permanently. Using hot coals requires you to wait for 60 seconds and then it expires in 2 minutes.
It means it is annoying to use repeteadly.

I tried making a carnitas station 10 minutes ago because my family was starving. The idea was to make a medium size pen for pig only and set up a cooking place outside, with a row of corn inside. The two problems I faced were:

Because pregnancy is not just assigning a player to another.

A problem is forced reproduction.  Another problem is the high rate of players starting as babies. Players having the ability to choose to become parents would enhance their responsibility to take care of their children.

Spoon, you do realize before modern technology irl, you couldn't really.. choose to become pregnant? You could choose to have sex with the intention of pregnancy, but whether you get pregnant or not wasn't up to you.

In the same sense a woman could not want a child, have it anyway, and not be able to provide for it. Then she has to decide whether or not she can risk raising this child.

This struggle of having to choose bc you can't support all your kids is reflected in game, and I think it's a nice touch of realism that makes the chosen child so much more important.
Similarly, the "You are Hope" situation is another derivative from not being able to force or prevent pregnancy, and has become a big part of the OHOL community.

It's not a problem, it's a part of the game.

This is not very accurate as you couldn´t choose your pregnancy but child mortality rate was also very high.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infant_mortality

We are not talking about SID nor death by starvation here, but babies that died mainly because the sanitary condition was not as good as today. Poverty conditions have always been a limiting factor but they have rarely been a condition for deciding if a child was or not viable.

Spoonwood is right in many regards: the game does not describe accurately the parenting nor pregnancy process (and the Eve throwing babies left and right is a laughable example). Do you really think it is normal for a female to get pregnant over 30 times from 14-40 years old? Are you not seeing a problem here?

I am not against starving a child to ensure another´s survival. I am against the game forcing you to do so as a normal way to develop an early town. Child abandonment happens only because player assignation to mothers and childhood are poorly designed, not because realism and omg rich dynamics drama so good.

#120 Re: Main Forum » A Game of Child Abandonment » 2020-04-19 12:14:39

Spoonwood and Pein are right imo, the game is poorly designed in the tech tree and population control. The model for how players are assigned to mothers seems to work the same for Eves, starting camps, middle villages and big cities.

That makes absolutely no sense in regards to reality, mothers are forced to leave their kids because the chance of surviving is the same as long as they have food (either there is food and all survive or there is not and all die).

For the Eve and early camps that translates in fast predation of wild food thus making it harder for generations 4/5. Sanitation and tech have no impact on natality (except fire). In our brains we are used to everyone being able to survive but we forget about the full shot of vaccines that makes that possible.

Family size at server level should never be the same for all tech levels for starters. Tech levels should not be force rushed at all (you can survive with a middle sized 4/6 population with 0 iron and water from ponds).

Number of families is poorly related to player numbers. On paper looks fine, in practice is terrible: a linear system assignment of players for an exponential grow model of population its just nonsense.

In the end child abandonment is the result of poor design and lack of understanding on how the game goes at a players level.

#122 Re: Main Forum » As some of you noticed » 2020-04-19 07:38:55

Yeah, that would be so cool, a little knife to make small wounds. And a little bow and arrow to shoot people in a playful way, like a shot in the eye or something. And a little baby car! It could run slowly at adult speed... And the little plane could teleport babies a very short distance like 20 tiles.

Crumpaloo wrote:

Could you describe the picture? Is this something about how people cant get iron if you put a well down?

Yeah, wells dry off every other surrounding well up to 160 tiles on each direction

Iron comes from the same well locations but in badlands locations. (Springs, Iron and Oil are all fixed in a 40x40 grid on the map). Muddy Iron only changes into a vein if it is east or west of the first well location of a family.

By covering the map completely with well placed wells I dried all the other existing wells, thus making impossible to the new Eves to change the muddy veins and get iron.

You had to run past the colored area to set a well location. The Black dot at north is an Eve that did it. Yesterday Eve Search went 1k north and they were one of the two big families. The other Eve that made it was the Snowdy Brown family. The went about 1700 south (you can´t see it on the map).

At some point I was thinking of triggering the apoc too (green dots are the Nosaj locations).
