I don't know how many families are running at any given time, I assume you have that data.

You could just store the recent decedents for each living family and update it on every birth/death
to minimize the queries?

I assume once the lines are extinguished you just dump it anyways.

#1002 Re: Main Forum » milkweed watering » 2018-05-14 22:54:54

Would be nice if by watering them they would regrow faster too though.
I guess removing them is good enough if you have to sometimes.

If people really wanted to waste water they can still water the adobe..

Hello!

I purchased this game less than 24 hours ago, and have put in quite a bit of gameplay time in already.

After seeing the game pop-up in a few places (particularly Youtube), it looked super interesting and I thought I'd give it a try.  I wanted to give you some feedback as a brand-new player, as I think it is in the first few days of gameplay that users decide if they are really into it or not.

So...

As a new player, I have found this game to be *extremely* difficult and not as enjoyable as I had hoped.  In fact, from what I've read on the forums, old players also find the game difficult.  It seems, from what I have been reading, that the developer of the game (Jason) has been worried about 'bored players', and has therefore instituted a bunch of barriers to make it harder to progress/survive in the game.  Unfortunately, the major downfall to this is that it seems nearly impossible for new players to figure out how to survive/thrive, and elder players are stretched too thin to actually teach or guide.  Personally, I think the developer's focus may be misguided, but I am neither a developer nor a long-time player... so what do I know?  That said, a game is supposed to be fun... not stressful and hard.  There needs to be a balance of challenge and enjoyment, IMO.

Anyway, the vast majority of my experiences so far have been me getting spawned into the middle of nowhere, often by myself as an 'Eve' or as a baby to an 'Eve' (who often lets me die, which I understand because it's fricken hard to have a baby).  Right out of the gate, I am not enjoying this. I crave the social aspect of the game, so being plopped into the game by myself has been incredibly frustrating.  I can't learn anything from anyone, I don't have the breathing room to explore/practice/experiment with the environment (because I am literally just running around trying to find berries or onions to stay alive), and I know that I am not a strong enough player to keep a baby and myself alive while learning... I just have to hope that I stay alive long enough, and my baby sticks around and knows what they are doing.  Out of probably hundreds of respawns, this has happened maybe twice.

The times I have actually enjoyed the game are when I am spawned into a thriving community.  I am able to wander around and learn what's going on, and sometimes someone is able to spare time to tell me something useful.  I also love the chance to communicate with others, roleplay the family dynamics, and see the drama of little villages play out.  Out of the many hours I have played, this has really only happened once.  I was a part of some smaller communities that were ok, but not as fun.

The game seems like a lot of work for a new player.  You have to find a place to live, find the things you need, figure out how to do it all.  Then you inevitably die and have to restart from scratch.  Alone.  With nothing.  It's just annoying. I crave the social gameplay so badly.  I want to spawn into pre-existing families.  I want to be part of a community.  I want to be taught by the elders.  And I do not want to be so stressed about grinding and surviving that it's impossible to enjoy the social aspect.

Maybe this is happening because I am starting at a time when the game is at the beginning of a lifecycle or something, and maybe there aren't communities for me to spawn into.  However, from what I gathered from Jason's posts, this is by design.  He has intentionally made it so that we spawn 7000 tiles away from the last place, and that we aren't "supposed to stumble upon old towns".

Despite my gripes, the times I was spawned into pre-existing villages have been awesome and I *really* enjoyed the game.  Everytime I respawn, I hope to get that experience again.  Perhaps something can be done so that players can choose to spawn as Eve?  Or maybe have it so that you spawn as Eve or a baby of Eve only a certain number of times in a row?

At first you will die horribly whenever you spawn in a place that is NOT a thriving village. Then you will be able to help a village stay alive and you will start to live longer and longer as Eve and be able to be helpful. Before you know it you will be a desert shaman seeding your babies all across the lands..

#1004 Re: Main Forum » Pinging the Well » 2018-05-11 13:59:29

The point isn't to guard the one well. In my dream there is a room with like 15-20 wells and someone
is well-master, you bring empty water cart to well master and he fills it for you or tells you to look for
wild water.

If you are on guard mode over the water supplies you can, have it set up with a perfect tile to wait on
and you can use full wells to do multi leveled pings on your other wells.

Obviously this isn't worth it for just one well, but if multiple wells can be run well ;.. then it can be
pretty nice in the end for increased carry capacity.

Knife can cut wheat and tons of other stuff you already asking for

It does almost all the things that either sharp rocks or flints can do..

#1007 Re: Main Forum » Where did the coordinates go? » 2018-05-10 17:32:39

IF people want coordinates, there are stickied guides on
how to set up your own server...

Afaik server side mods do not require changing your clients,
so you can set it up so you always spawn at your death site
or 0,0 or whatever the fuck you want. Expecting the main server
to be set up the way you want instead of how the person in
charge of them wants is silly people <3.

I have run into plenty of friendly people who would probably help
you set up your own servers if you asked around in the discord etc.

Desert is good, but it DOES seem like a weird ingame bug that there are areas that are just as good as perfect fire..
I don't think the desert will be a permanent thing.

I DESPISE subscription based games like that, never buy anything like that. Also imagine how pissed off people would be when starved as a baby..

I think karma is DOA mostly for those reasons, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It was a long thread but it got off the karma topic pretty damn quickly, it seems to have ended in https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1517 .

p.s. As more and more time goes by this forum needs a search function more and more.

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/ … fePage.cpp

You can see all the game files https://github.com/jasonrohrer most of
the goodies are in the OneLife section, the LivingLifePage.cpp seems to
have the fun parts of the game client like zoom, how much you can
say, etc. I don't know if it controls your hunger or just reads it, hopefully
the more important things like that are server side.

#1014 Re: Main Forum » The glitch that costed me my life » 2018-05-10 02:07:04

It might be changed in the Mod but in normal game after a certain age you loose the hunger sound. My guess is that that age might not be changed in 2hol mod.

My other guess is that the number to change is in livinglife.cpp

  else if( ourLiveObject->foodStore <= 3 &&
                             computeCurrentAge( ourLiveObject ) < 57 ) {

// don't play hunger sounds at end of life
// because it interrupts our end-of-life song
                        // currently it's 2:37 long

This starts at line 11833. I think sammoh is the one who runs the 2hol server. If the bug is the one I think it is it should be easy to fix, just change 57 to 114 or multiply it by the constant he uses to change the lifespan (how I would've done it for lazyness's sake).

#1015 Re: Main Forum » how to take Screenshot » 2018-05-10 00:24:05

Print screen worked for me, it put it onto my "clipboard" and I pasted it into paint just fine.
We probably are not talking about the same thing I am guessing.

#1017 Re: Main Forum » how to take Screenshot » 2018-05-09 22:41:46

It is "print screen" key. If you don't have that I don't know how to help, I know some keyboards are different.

Ctrl g while searching will get you to the next result.

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife

Is the game data, you can look at it all through the website like normal files search the whole shebang.

If you want to edit the files you gotta make a free account and "fork" the stuff over. I think it just copies it from jason's but I am github newbie.

#1019 Re: Main Forum » Are locked doors essentially useless now? » 2018-05-09 22:29:57

I think they reset with each update too if I read one of the git thingies correctly. Supposedly
after each update/reset all the keys and locks get set to their parent object. I guess if the whole
village is killed every update (which it is) then it makes sense that people wouldn't have
everything just be locked forever.

I think being able to pick locks somehow is necessary if we are gonna have locks.
Otherwise shit just gets locked forever and no one can use that tile again..

What bothers me, is some of them people say they are not new and don't even know how to pick stuff up, eat food, or put on clothing.

I bet they are afraid we are just gonna starve em if they admit it.

I ask them if they want to live, if they don't say anything or run away I let em die.
Otherwise I TRY to live, don't always succeed but makes a nice challenge.

they often say, and i do believe they not new, but they still starve near the farm holding a basket, usually 1 out of 9 kids is a good number, one daughter never enough, two is often too much.

I carry them to a berry bush, leaving all behind, explaining stay here, pick off branches, get some milkweed, return in 5 minutes. Okay. they dont pick off a berry they just run back where we came from, knowing that there is no food there, often they starve. Sometimes i get like 3 out of 7 who doesnt forget to eat. But they expect someone to farm all life and they die on first time a watering cycle begins. Teaching is pointless, i ask them if they want a hard eve run, or hard run in general they mostly do. But if i run with one kid and work, they dont make things happen for us.

today i shoved a guy how to make pies and some nifty tricks, in between making blade and shear tool, getting extra wood for him
but food wasnt an issue, and havent had other goals really.

other guy was also new, he wanted to compost, we barely had babies, like 3, and one girl died early, so i hope the civ lasted, also the two guys looked the same so was hard to know which is which. he also followed me and watched me do it, so it was kinda sympathetic so i just showed a few tricks with sheep, mutton pie, kindling and stuff. i went out as a kid with a fresh backpack and returned with 5 iron as a man. Had an abandoning mom and an aunt who called me oliver, the most nice lady who raised me up and called me oliver even if i had no name. she was old till i completed the shear tool, and was so nice hearing her congratulate me. Was a half  life of work to do without any iron and wood nearby but someone mentioned when i was a baby and i was determined to make one.

Having a dude who wants to learn from you is about as much as you can hope for, I figure he is on that compost kick like how you wanted to make the shears.

I love composting but I end up having a lot of trouble keeping the sheep fed, last time people KEPT shearing them and baking berry pies.
