How about this then:  Whatever special biome your Eve chooses to settle in is what the family is allowed to interact in and if she chooses one of the more generic ones, you are out of luck for the desert, arctic & jungle.

The system as it exists is inherently racist.  The removal of it isn't politically correct, it is just the right thing to do if you believe all races can perform the same basic tasks as depicted in the game.  Anyone who argues otherwise is a racist in my book.  Skin tones should be so that everyone feels included in the game, not used as stereotypes of race x is good at y.

The_Anabaptist

And what if no Eve's chooses desert for example then you cant get sulfur, bad idea.

Black people dont get as easily sunburnt as gingers or other white people, does that mean that biology is racist?

It's not really about performing tasks since everyone can make latex if they have the ingredients, it's about evolution and adaptation to a particular environment.

Black people dont get heatstroke in the desert that's accurate to real life (to a certain degree) nothing racist with that.

Main issue imo is in the fact that it's a pure restriction instead of an advantage in adaptation over others.

Well for one, we could have more Eves than we do now, that could mitigate the problem you propose.  And it makes more sense for scaling the game upward, assuming we ever have a net player base gain again.  OR  Smart Eves would evolve with the meta and learn not to all plop their camps on the grasslands.  My bet is on the Smart Eves.  If it proves too much of a problem to overcome, an Eve could be given a notice of the filled ecological niches when they are created in order to encourage them to find the right Biomes.

Nah, you don't get it, we really didn't want rubber to begin with.  All those posts by players about ending racial stereotyping were actually us not knowing that racism is good for us and society as a whole.  Trust in the (gas)light of the divine developer to show you the way to your actual heart's desire.  And don't forget to wear your 'ghost' costume while you waiting around for fun.

I've started filling backpacks with 4 different food stuffs when possible.  At the very least moms can equip it to babies and tell them to eat the items within it and hopefully it will help show them the value of eating different things.

I think we should all try and breed as many animals as possible before Jason gets back.  Let's see how many moving animals the game engine can handle!

Ram plates for cars.  Cause the griefers need a way to smash buildings and kill people while joyriding around the countryside.  And it will encourage the use of property fences.

#57 Re: Main Forum » Since gene score is now so important some thoughts to it » 2020-05-18 20:36:22

I think the two biggest challenges are that 1) a mother gets zero warning that they are about to have a kid. and 2) SIDS babies.

1) Zero warning.  How do you family plan?  If you dare go out of town, then you can pretty much count on returning to town with a baby and not what you went to fetch.
2) SIDS babies.  I can be in a beautiful town, but the kid refuses to stick around, sometimes not even taking enough time to even evaluate the situation.  They are essentially a miscarriage.  Nothing you can do about that.

Honestly, I would prefer a system where a blessing or a curse just counted as a + or a - to your overall score.  Let a player who reaches elder age bestow a bless / curse to each family member once.  It would probably encourage "respecting your elders".

Put a paper with a message into a marked box labeled "suggestions", then hit with a hammer.

Sort thru the scraps of wood to discover countless pieces of paper, all of which have gone unread.

I for one hate both the posse and leadership systems.  I would put up with more solo killing rather than see more time wasted on both of these pointless systems.  I want real updates, not more of this garbage.

No, No, I'm pretty sure the only way to acquire iron is to stab somebody, collect the buckets of blood, pour it into ingot shaped molds and then put them into the furnace until all the impurities of the blood boil away.  And it also helps if they were carrying a basket or backpack full of iron when you stabbed them.

#63 Re: Main Forum » Jason, what's OUR motivation » 2020-04-28 02:59:47

I for one enjoy not taking for granted that I'll live to 60 every life now.  The starvation rate feels more like it did when I first bought the game.  It actually feels like the yum chain is important for once.

That being said, I stick to the basic tasks:  Hunt rabbits, feed sheep, build roads, collect branches and firewood, fill buckets of water from ponds.  I don't bother working the smith anymore, only make the most basic of foodstuffs, haven't built a well, constructed a building or dug for iron in ages.  I've basically given up on progressing up the tech tree.  Too much to relearn, and who knows how long it will last before its re-tooled again?  Or the racial restriction get in my way of doing a project that I used to be fully capable of doing before.  I know, progress, right?

I do feel that there could be more families out there to spread the babies around.  Of course, if more babies would grow up into productive adults, then maybe they wouldn't feel like such a burden either.  Can't believe how many kids will sit by a berry bush and pick it clean in seconds.

As a kid, I remember having a fascination with foods that my ancestors ate as homesteaders.  Some of these foods simply aren't made by us more civilized folk, unless we have a strong desire to recreate the past.  Others I only tried because my grandmothers still had a hankering for them from time to time.  As a kid I remember trying chicken's feet and thought that they were a bland and rubbery mess.  I remember once having the equivalent of "pig's brain in a dough pocket" because my grandma considered it a delicacy.  I found them to be a gritty mess and vowed to never have another again.  I wanted to try pickled watermelon, but never got a chance because nobody made them anymore.  I know my ancestors ate dandelions and made dandelion wine, but now we spray them as weeds.

There should be a category of wild or early generation recopies that can only be eaten or made by them.  This would hopefully ease the current suffering of spawning as an Eve and finding everything gone already, without having to reintroduce infinite spawning berry bushes.  The burdock is probably the closest thing we have to this right now.  Most advanced civs pick them to be fed to rabbits, but they are edible.  Would it be that hard to make them inedible directly past "x" generation?  Maybe start doing that with wild onions and wild carrots as well?  Maybe add a few other new wild varieties of plants too?

Just finished as an Applewhite.  There were large stacks of corn around.  Don't think many were using them to feed pigs or cows.  Was still a good town for food diversity, but it looked like it was starting to go downhill in the end.  Did see some black visitors, so maybe not all is lost?  Was building a road northward, hopefully people from the north can use it to find the town easier.

I'm on the complete opposite side. I think this game is at its worst when all you do is grind for an hour in the vain hope of keeping things going. The lives where I'm just a workhorse for an hour are the lives where I quit afterwards because I'm neither playing for fun or enjoyment which is what you should be doing when playing a game.

I am by no means a roleplayer but the lives where you connect and work with people are the best imo. Teaching people how to fish and watching a group come together to survive in a small hut area together? That's some good stuff. Killing and feeding sheep for an hour to produce sheep skin bodies, mutton, and straw hats for 40 people? I'll thankfully forget about it like the other dull lives. Lives grinding oil? Absolutely fuck that. The few lives where I taught someone how to do oil and make kerosene? Now those were good times.

I really feel the game would be better if Jason would let up the grip and stop forcing everyone into his specific vision for the game as some sort of starvation simulator.

I'm kinda with you fug.  Grinding for an hour stinks.  Especially tasks that don't stand the test of time.  Typically farming and cooking fit those bills for me.  Everything created is eaten by locusts in a generation.  I'm most fulfilled building something in a town that I stand a chance of recognizing in a future life.  A building.  A fast road.  Sometimes even just a series of horse hitches by clusters of resources.

I'm not as big on interacting with other players.  Probably because too many of them act in ways that absolutely baffle me, even when I try to explain things to them.  "No.  Taking a full set of clothes & backpack from town as a kid and announcing that you are travelling to the bell, 28k away, is a terrible and frankly selfish idea..."

Choosing a family's size is most definitely the act of parenting, arguably good parenting even, and even civilization building.  Ignoring the historical reasons during times of stress, I will focus on modern times.

Republicans:  What are they against? Planned Parenthood and abortion.  Have you heard the term "welfare mothers"?  Its a derogatory slur that Republicans have used to paint mothers who can't afford to raise all the kids they have born as low class and stupid.  While OHOL doesn't have birth control, it definitely has the ability to limit family size.  Some people use it to consolidate their meager resources to ensure one or two kids live to sixty, vs a dozen all dying in their teens.  Why should one philosophy be shamed over the other?

China:  One child policy.  While the rule has cause many unintended side effects, without it, China would not be the country it is today.  There simply would have been starvation of billions.

Spoonwood, this the most spurious complaint against the game I've seen in ages.

Got to play an Eve for the first time in like forever.  Just as I remembered the good old days.  Leaving a trail of babies to die on the cold hard ground, all the while trying to raise one daughter to self sufficiency.  Hope you had some luck Flower.  I died of starvation shortly after we parted.

Goodbye genetics score...

To me the bigger question is: "If all this artwork has existed for what, 2 years now?  Then why haven't the mechanics to build any of the images been developed yet?"

Picture 1:  Is the monorail that fundamentally different from the railroad?
Picture 2:  A car with a modern skin, a road with a modern skin, and yet they don't exist.
Picture 3:  High tech walls, but walls none the less.  A robot.  Ok, I'm willing to give a pass on that robot...

Big towns aren't fun.  Why aren't they fun?  Because they produce at a faster rate than what came before them.  The game engine needs to be smart enough to realize that in this area, there is too much "x", and do something about it:

Too many berry bushes, send in the blackbirds to eat some of them clean.
Too many carrot plots, send in the wild sheep.
Too many domesticated animals, send in a hungry pack of wolves.
Too many buildings, send in a tornado.
etc.

Towns need a greater variety of disasters than merely running out of stuff.
