#653 Re: Main Forum » Village Defense - Civilian Militia » 2019-05-29 09:14:05

Just revert back cursing to anyone. Killing a griefer does nothing, they already accomplished his goal by the time he gets killed. Cursing was actually useful and forced them at least to be sneaky. War was a massive failure, because what we got in return were terror suicidal strikes. Did you ever see an army vs army engagement? A gang fight at least? I didn´t. The closest I saw were a few 2/3 people massacres on a starting village and a ton of suicidal strikes. Genocide and war are way different things.

Have you ever wondered around your village using a horse in deep desert/jungle/tundra? Yes? Then you know what is there. A ton of useful stuff and clothing, horses and carts with pies, a bp with a knife and a dead corpse. A bow with a BP full of steel. They just don´t care. This is not real life mechanics. In real life you have enough time to get to know who you are living with, and the other person has to keep living his life. Here you have absolute anonymity and infinite lives. Stop the rationale that the game "has to be balanced" to allow griefing. Even with open cursing there was a lot of destruction and sabotage, what did we expect after a shield like this one?

But 100/100 is just too big for that. It is also very hard not to find a collapsed mine if you are actively looking for an iron vein. For lasts: roaming the map to prevent respawn will be the next big thing among griefers smile

Really well said. Now we have people coordinating greifing in the forum as well it's really discouraging. I don't really care to battle greifers. I'm not here for that.

In all honesty, the biggest mistake here is to reply to griefers threads. For once you are giving them visibility, and for seconds you are giving them your attention. There is nothing more sweet for a griefer to know that he made someone sad or angry. I could go a little deeper on the psychological reasons, but I rather not. The truth is, each reply to one of their threads is for a griefer a candy, a sweet reminder that he has the power to piss you off. Just don´t reply to griefer threads. Don´t reply to them because you are not going to change their view or make them feel bad. Don´t reply. Ever.

Crap, won't a character just die if the player loses connection? I had a crap internet routed by a potato couple weeks ago. Did I leave behind invalids?

Nope, you leave behind a braindead body that continues to exist until you starve to death.   This allows you to reconnect if your internet drops you.   But it also creates the weird situation where you can keep a child alive even though their "soul" is gone.

People tend to do this with daughters, especially if you are running low on fertile females.    Ideally, you want the potato to be on or near a fire and well clothed.   It reduces their hunger drain immensely.   Then you just need to check back regularly to keep them fed.    Whole cow milk is ideal.   But if you don't have that, meat pies work too.    If I have time, I like to make a crock of stew next to the poor thing, so I know there is a fixed food supply close by.

You can also play around with yum chaining, but that gets pretty complicated since you can't see their multiplier and someone else might feed yhem while you are away.  Not really worth it, imo.

If your last female is braindead yumming her over a fire is a pretty good option. Don´t bother to care about efficiency, she will only live to forty and could save a village.

This is why it is so dangerous to think of "griefer" as an accepatable part of the game on the same level as "farmer" or "baker".  It might be inevitable due to human nature that some people will grief, but you do not want to provide SUPPORT to the griefer playstyle.   Don't make them feel welcome and encouraged to keep griefing.  Because they will happily screw over your game and the rest of the community, if you let them.

It is not that hard, you have the power to grief but it´s not cool to others. If you have the power to grief (And that is way to much power right now) the people should have the power to socially retaliate. Removing curse outside family was the worst thing ever, even worst than sword and mass eves coming togheter. It just killed the *one* thing that we know for sure the griefer cares.

jasonrohrer wrote:

I don't think pine walls were ever used by anyone, ever, milkweed or not!

The thing is, I've made those pine panels in real life, and it's a ton of work.

There's an aspect of this game that is a "real maker aesthetic," and I've kept that going for most things.  Track kits are a recent exception, along with property fences.

Obviously, the real maker aesthetic is cool and unique (no other game has 25 steps to make a fire, and the same steps translate exactly to real-world fire-making).

But just as obviously, a realistic making aesthetic is long-term tedious when you want to get down to business and play the damn game.

So I'm torn on stuff like this.  Would be nice to make a stack of pine panels after making one, and set up structures throughout the village quickly.

Also, the "adobify" suggestion is a great one.

Maybe they could be very easy to move to make ad-hoc, temporary structures?

But in real life the material cost is in reality what dictates what is made and what is not. Pine walls are not obsolete becuase they are tedious or require a lot of time and work, they are obsolete because you need 5 ropes and 4 shafts to make ONE panel, wich is ludicrous compared to the stone alternative or even compared to no building at all.

I predict that even at (1 rope+ 1 shaft) per panel we would still see no Pine walls, because the smallest room at 3x3 inside would need  16!!! ropes or 8 lassos, 64 milkweed.... you get the idea. To make them viable we need to get to 4 panels/rope at least. Think that the same room outside is less than 1 iron and labor (half a shovel and a quarter of a chisel). At 1 rope/ panel you still need more than 1 full iron (hoe), alot of work to farm and collect shafts plus a whole lot of soil + water.

The only way I see Pine walls working and flourishing is under a heavy buff in the cost side, something like: 4 ropes and 4 shafts give you a very complicated to craft workstation that produces 1 panel/ 1shaft alone, or maybe with a high top limit (with a chance of use like steel tools).

#664 Re: Main Forum » Newer Player, 30hrs+2weeks, Quitting » 2019-05-27 10:32:11

I agree there is toxicity in the game and the player base. I can share a similar story: new camp around gen3, trying to set up early farm, gma had chosen a place a little far to the south of green biomass wich had mass soil. Me starting with almost no clothing to care the berries -all good- (this is pre Loom clothing update btw). I realize theres no soil and start bringing soil from about 40 tiles north, one basket. Two kids stay right in the middle of the berry farm, full gear, and start talking between them eating berries doing nothing for ten minutes. I ask for help and for a bp to speed up soil (they both have) or to help me get soil. Get completely insulted and called names - lazy ass go get your own, work for it- and similar speech when it was clear they had it gifted from adults. I´d almost say it is the same person. Ended up angry enough to kill one of them and getting killed by my own mom... and called griefer lel.

They are these little kids that IRL won´t dare to look you in the eye if you crossed them on the street, but get a full ego boost on the Internet. Anonymity is the only thing that keeps them in the game (same as griefers).

However, there is also solidarity and kindness in the player base. Several times I have recieved gifts from players (not elders dying) and several other times I´ve given my own stuff to others. Several times I´ve asked for trust and recieved trust in return while asking for a lent cart, horse, BP or knife. Several times I´ve trusted and several times I´ve done what another player asks me to, in their less than polite message, because I understand sometimes there is no time to waste (last game I just said "palm oil" to a kid in the kitchen where the kernels were, while I was running in my last two minutes to get the latex). Smart enough, the kid had it ready when I came back just in time to get the newcomen ready  before I died.

So, my best advice is, don´t take it too seriously if they start insulting you. Worst case scenario just kill the annoying lil kid, or take a break and leave that family. Everytime I get annoyed and leave I just say to myself, whatever, it´s their loss if I don´t play with them. Also most veterans know when someone is being a dick to others, so you may even get praised for killing the toxic players.

Taking a horescart away from your family like that is rude and basically stealing.  Also, a child can pop out when you're on horse and getting born to a woman on a horse who never picks you up on bs2 isn't a fun experience for that player.  It also takes time for a player to get to 14, and that isn't time where the player is doing what they would like to do.  Being an Eve out in the wild who can raise children also makes more fun possible for more people, in addition to allowing people to start with their projects when they start playing.

I would call it stealing if I didn´t make it. Provided that you are in a town with a) Basic steel tools b) Enough water, I believe it is totally possible to make a cart and get a horse at 14 ~ 16 and I will add that most of the times players don´t like to use horses and end up being griefed. Being an Eve from start may be more challenging and closer to what you are expecting, but getting a new settlement by yourself is not really harder (I mean, you get to start with some stuff if you want). I am just posting because the Eve problem and making a new town and starting new projets are completely different things. You can even ditch the horse at this point, move out at five with a basket and some clothing, pretty sure you can survive in the wild and get 1k away at least at 14. Just don´t tell the only choice is to Eve because it is not.

Even though players like being Eve, there's simply no room in the game for "more Eves" than there need to be.  If we have 10 Eves, and only one makes a viable village, the other ones who played Eve might as well have played solo on a higher-number server, right?  The only difference is that they had babies along the way, and roped them into what would inevitably be a failed project.

The original idea for the game was that Eve would be extremely rare.  She was player1 on the server, but that's it.

"Well, what happens when everyone dies out?"

Okay, well in that case, a new Eve is spawned to get things started again.

"What happens if there's only one available mother, and 10 people joining.  Will she get 10 babies?  That's insane"

Okay, in that case, we'll spawn more Eves to spread the load.

But you can see that even with these concessions to the original "one Eve" concept, we still really only want Eves in the game when they're really needed.

Also, if you like to Eve, just get born in a town and run away.  Anyone can play the starting-from-scratch game whenever they want (assuming that the land isn't stripped bare around town, which is another problem....)

If you're determined to quite literally never, EVER let players be able to eve, despite it being a popular playstyle that many people enjoy, then you need to give us the fucking ability to properly branch off of a family. We need more space.

I like being eve because it's a challenge, moreso than sitting in a functioning village adding to the already-large food stores and munching on pies. I like being able to start from scratch, build the first kiln, plant the first berries, and being completely on my own, with only my children to continue my legacy. I like seeing the foundations of something great, and coming on later to find that my family is still going! That the tiny eve camp bloomed into a city!

You just don't get the same effect anymore. Having to run for half my fertility just to find wild lands again is not enjoyable. Getting stuck with a surname that means nothing to me is not enjoyable. Being forced into already settled lands no matter how I spawn in, is not enjoyable.

Things stagnated very quickly. I'm already burnt out on being forced together in one small area when the map has easily the space and resources for hundreds, if not thousands, of settlements. I'm tired of seeing a town everywhere I look on bs2. I'm tired of being forced to play with strangers that just end up slaughtering my family a generation later.

Give us options that aren't /die /die /die.

The only accurate part about your post is getting stuck with the surname. I can take a horse at fourteen in most towns and be like 2k away in a few minutes. #668 Re: Main Forum » In your opinion, what is the weakest aspect of the game? » 2019-05-25 22:13:13

Complete lack of tech tree design:

- Too short of a tech tree: good players climb up the tech tree fast enough to make it boring and harder to learn for the less experienced players, wich in return increases griefing and boredom because at engine pump you have little to do. With decent people gathering iron and making food gen 5/6 engine is more than doable.

- Lack of diversity in the tech tree: every town has the same needs and resources to use.

- Decresed attachment to each life, since every town and family are the same in terms of needs and crafting.

- Decreased importance of roles in each tech step, anyone can farm-smith-bake-make clothing with the same efficiency ingame.

- Lack of social components in the tech tree. Material advances are not the only way civilization evolved and social constructs are lacking severily: property, institutions, religion are a big hole in the game (and if you pay attention players are willing to use crowns, make shrines and hoard stuff, its just that the game mechanics dont allow them to play the way civilization evolved)

- Lack of diversity inside each step in the tech tree (so far the developing team seems to be dictating the town levels by the water availability, every step has the same activities to perform as long as you make water work)

I am not trying to bash the developing teams work, I honesly don´t see a design in progress.

Testo I think correct in that such a change wouldn't help food diversity.

testo is also incorrect in saying fucking beans and raw corn are viable. it takes 6 people at high yums for it to be worth it, which is bloody unlikely. Math hasnt changed, raw food is awful and will always be, as it should. I've shown you this a hundred times spoon, even with yum, the benefits of raw foods are selfish.

carrots are the only viable option and only pre sheep since they're better as carrot pies/animal feed than eaten raw.

I never said green beans and raw corn were viable (you may say they are suboptimal, even when they are around the same efficiency of berries, the same 80% of players eat not from the wild but from the farm).

I am not getting in the "this food is bad" or "this food is good" argument. Food consumption for the average player has horrible efficiency anyways.

What I said was: giving everyone a yum chain even if you don´t devote to it like yummers do, will be too good in the long run, thus forcing a food nerf in the future.

Just to be clear about the topic:
I sometimes yum a little, sometimes don´t yum at all and sometimes I play the yum addict version. I can guarantee each one has its benefits if you know what you are doing. (That includes when you are eating sub food like beans and raw corn). I would never debate the number efficiency thou, corn and beans are not good in efficiency.

I don´t know how but free Eveing for anyone is just not fun for the people that has to "deal with it". Today I played 3 lives. First town two Eves spawn out of nowhere, grab clothing take horse bow and start picking stuff. We managed to kill one fast the second took some time. Second town same story, lost 2 girls in the process. Last life got at least 4 Eves running around at different times, first one stayed naked grabbed bow I managed to take her fast, second two I was out of town just came to see a three corpes on the ground, two eves. Five minutes later a naked girl stays in our farm giving me hearts, at that point should I really let her stay??

Griefers are just having the time of their life, no curse, no nothing. I regularly do scavenger runs around town. I always see: several bears running around, pick at least two or three full clothing/iron tools, bps, baskets with steel and bows all around. They just dont care. If you want war is ok, just give me something to fight back or they care at least, this is not PvP.

3.  If there's a situation where there's no mother for you, and you have no Eve token, your request to join the server is denied.

(Or maybe there's some way to earn Eve tokens more than once per 24 hours).

So what happens if there are no suitable mothers left, and every active player has no Eve tokens?  The whole world would die out.

Pretty sure that would make every life precious and each /die painful wouldn´t it? But also world wouldn´t die, just BS2 would be on halt from gettting players that used theyr /die and Eve token.

Joke aside maybe I´m just looking at it from my narrow perspective becuase I actually try not to use /die and I didn´t Eve in the past 2 months.

Call me an elitist but I like the idea more now, because it rewards players for playing theyr best with what they get and punishes players that want to choose the life that fits them.

#672 Re: Main Forum » how dare you (Jason says: "this is the other Eve thread") » 2019-05-24 03:25:32

I think it is pretty obvious griefers are actively abusing the Eve mechanic. Keeping curse inside family was a huge mistake, as you are basically free to do as you please against others. On a side note just keep an eve token on BS2 every 24 hrs, if you get lineage banned and use your token you are forced to play on a different server.

This is actually bad news for old players, anyone can kill with 100% efficiency now. Goodbye duels, goodbye asking for help and showing to others that you are actually being attacked for no reason, while the little kid on the other side just decided you gotta die becuase you didn´t let him put a building where he wanted. Also goodbye to friendly encounters in the wild, I just aim you and you never get to dodge my bow/knife. This will fix Eve griefers, but needs a balance on pads, they are just too easy to get dirty while nobody is watching. This will also highlight the benefits of zoom mod btw.

As an afterthough I think clean pads should never be allowed to be put on the ground on first place, griefing them is way easier than making them.
This is a mayor change in village dynamics btw. I don´t like it but it could *just* turn to be good.
