They supposedly have 20 uses, but there were a few code changes recently to handle preserving the number of uses of objects when they change into other objects, e.g. chisel being used on a rock to become big rock with chisel. It's possible there is a bug somewhere preventing the shears from being created with the full 20 uses.
We will need others to verify this, then I can raise an issue on github for it.
It won't be. I already asked Jason something like that. If if was going to be, I would stop working on the mod.
Ha, well yeah, TFC is my favourite Minecraft mod, and I drew inspiration from it heavily.
Update:
I have finished adding forged materials to the game. At this stage still just copper and bronze, but even just those materials have taken almost 800 new objects and thousands of transitions. Just think how much work it will be to add iron!
In the meantime, the new forged tools require a new item: the anvil! Get a load of this bad boy:

Next step will be bringing the mod up to date with Jason's latest content changes. That won't be a trivial thing. Then after that, adding iron.
one mom of mine found karltown once
yesterday my mom found a small patch of carrots, nobody there , basic tools, so kinda saved of all the eve setup, also was in a good spot
reborn there much later when all i had left is 3 brothers, but was good to see it againother than that, some small villages badly placed with 3 soil, no water, i think is fine
Karltown? Who named it that?
I like the idea of your "body" staying alive on disconnect. As a bonus it would prevent death by loss of connection too.
I'm also fine with detaining individuals as long as it takes multiple people to do it.
Edit: the one body thing should be global, otherwise trolls will just disconnect and join a different server to grief there.
Another problem with guards: you train up the next generation of guards only to have one of them be the griefer. You can't actually keep people out of your village because the birth system is random.
powa gets it. This is what I was saying weeks ago until I got tired of wasting my (virtual) breath.
The basic natural advantage a town should have over an outsider is numbers. But an organized group should be capable of overrunning a town. So the solution should focus on the power of numbers.
My suggestion was to have a system for detaining an individual that is only effective when used by more than one person. How many times have you seen more than one griefer at a time?
If there was a readily available action, like hitting someone with a long straight shaft that did nothing by itself but knocked them out when TWO people did it, that would be enough to stop every lone troll. Unless they straight up kill you first, but if they do, fair game to them.
I did a fresh install on my Windows PC and everything worked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can get on with more updates now.
Hey Babsy, I'm decommissioning gusminecraft.cloudapp.net to be replaced by unclegus.cloudapp.net
All other instructions remain the same.
I pulled Jason's latest code changes, rebuilt the client (on Linux) and logged in expecting it to crash, but it didn't and I spawned as a baby. My mother was powa, so we played a bit. You seem to have got the hang of it, powa!
Anyway, if it's not crashing for everyone on Windows, I guess there's nothing to debug. If anyone else tries to join and gets a crash, please let me know.
Yeah, it's a new server, so I'm going to shut that one down.
My daughter was just now trying to join, but she upgraded the client to the latest version first, and it crashed on connect to my server. So I tried rolling it back to the official installer version which still crashed. Most people are on Windows, so this will be a big problem. I will try to debug it in a few hours' time.
The installer backs up your asset folders and settings files, then swaps in the mod ones. If you want to go back to playing on whatever server you were using before, run the uninstall script and it will swap everything back.
The server is unclegus.cloudapp.net but that's all taken care of for you in the installer. You need to run the installer because it swaps out all the necessary asset folders. If you try to join the server without running the script, you'll get a version mismatch.
Good question! The underlying mechanic change of this mod is that things have a chance to break. The tools of different metals serve the same purpose, but bronze is better than copper, then iron is better again, then steel is top quality.
At this stage, only copper and bronze are implemented, but my next change will introduce iron working. Having just completed this massive overhaul in one "big bang", I'm hoping from here on I can implement things much more incrementally.
I've set up a new server; faster, better, more productive, fitter, happier and healthier. It's also running the latest version of UncleGusMod, with Copper and Bronze overhauled!
The mod now features casting of Copper and Bronze:

The forge now has two tiers to unlock by use of the new material, leather!
You'll need to travel further to find the ores since they don't spawn in the same areas.

And tools wear down and need maintenance, sometimes breaking altogether.
So how do I play this awesome mod?
1. Download this installer: UncleGusMod installer
2. Extract it into your game folder. (It should prompt a warning about merging the settings folder, which you should do). *
3. Run the installUncleGusMod script (.bat for Windows, .sh for Linux/Mac).
4. Run the game.
5. When you're ready to revert, run the uninstall script. The scripts take care of setting your custom server address and back up all the base game content.
* On Ubuntu, it likes to extract the contents of the .zip file into a folder with the same name as the .zip file. If it does this, move the contents of the new folder back out into your game directory.
I also think decay would be more interesting than a total wipe, but considering that a total wipe was necessary, the apocalypse was a much more interesting way to do it than just "the servers are down for maintenance".
Minor update: I finally got my image import process working properly, so I've updated the visuals of the copper and bronze tools and also added a new rocky biome for cassiterite to spawn in, so that you can't find copper and tin in the same place.
Coming up: New sprites for broken crockery and metal chunks, then a complete overhaul of metalworking introducing casting!
Okay, I have created a .zip file with the necessary changes to run this mod and I have tested that it works by using it on a different computer with the standard client installed on it.
I've tried to make it as simple as possible to install and uninstall, so I have included script and batch files to do these actions for you.
1. Download the pack here
2. Extract it into your OHOL game folder.
3. Run installUncleGusMod.sh on linux/mac or installUncleGusMod.bat on Windows.
4. Run the game and login.
When you want to swap back to whatever server you were joining before, run uninstallUncleGusMod.sh or uninstallUncleGusMod.bat and it will reverse the process.
A version mismatch will tell you that there's a new version of the pack to download. I'll just replace the zip file, so it should always have the same link. Make sure to uninstall the mod before extracting the new version, so that it overwrites the mod files.
With the latest update, there is now a version check between server and client, so I will need to put together a proper client distributable in order to let people join the server. I'll be getting on to that later today.
I was watching Steve Dutzy play on launch day, and TWICE he had his mother say "HI STEVE" to him. It freaked him out.
I think it would make sense to be able to name yourself if you reach a certain age without being named.
It seems that connecting to the server with the official client crashes on connect. My theory is that it is because the object and transition data is out of sync. I'll test this theory later and provide a download and instructions for how to get the data in the right state.
