How to make a livestock pen 3

With the nerfs to the pits, we got new strategies to make pens

the two fastest are: adobe and bell tower base
other options are fences, rose, stone walls, half adobe walls, adobe walls(later plastered), boxes, chests, locked chests, kiln, oven, cistern, grave, marked grave
natural blocking tiles: rabbit hole, pond(well later), cactus, tree and reed stump(decays in one hour)
the only permanent blocking solution which doesn't allow people removing it accidentally or intentionally: ancient wall, locked chest(very long time), the rest can be destroyed/removed so yu are down to the good intention of people, so you might as well use cheap/fast methodes
SZNu0cj.png
each free tile counts as a starting point for animals such as sheep, cow, pigs, etc.
animals can move in any direction straight, they choose one randomly
wild animals stay in their default biome (so you can just trap horses in a tiny desert)
they cannot change direction so a wall blocks them
they can skip trough 5 items, but not more than 5
so you can block them with plants producing hardened row(corn, squash, beans, potato, cabbage) or berry bushes
T8w1IbY.png
or you can even use rails
the first 2 diagonals need to be blocked in this case
5l9dBaJ.png

types of entrances:
1 corner entrance
take out the corner adobe one diagonally and put a bush, advantage is that is cheap, fast
disadvantage is easy to block from inside and looks bad, the pen outer edge takes up 1x1 more space
2 front entrance
looks and functions better, especially with 4 chest and an oven, a berry bush, looks better and makes it easy to expand on other sides, bit harder to block it easpecially with 2 bushes
it's more expensive with 3 walls
3 half corner entrance(shuriken entrance-as it looks like a shuriken when you got 4 of it): you take out the one before corner, put a bush, block the corner and the next one and provide one exit in inner side- you use this when the corner entrance would be more inconvenient near a kiln or building
4. berry diagonal entrance: has no corners and uses same amount of walls, its smaller than it looks like, provides some food inside and looks good
5. berry grid, open pen. uses the same principle, as sheep cannot step on berry bushes, you block lines with them and block every second with a wall, better as a cow pen, if you lure the cow inside
6. use the berry field as a blockage, 5 from each starting point (5x15 blocks sheep and you can remove one side of the walls)
7. rails entrance. minimum length 5, same as front entrance but cheaper on walls, carts allow food in, meat out, bones out

entrances: you need 2 entrances at least, so if someone shears the sheep in the wrong spot, can still exit, or one extra bush in that one entrance, the reason we had multiple was that dead sheep also blocked movement
for convenience, you need one exit to the berry field/oven/carrot/wheat
and one to dump the bones

corner tiles, as sheep cannot stand on the items, and cannot change direction, but players can, the items act as a corner tile, where people can exit, this can be any item, a plate, a seed, but of course someone will take it away, so you need items that are harder to remove unintentionally, best looking/most functional is a berry bush, especially unwatered, with soil on it, it takes a water, 8 minutes, picking off, extra 2 minutes, stakes, shovel, water to remove, this is 10 minutes plus to remove it, so if they do it, they will be more frustrated than you, same goes for berry seed in tilled row, that takes 12+ minutes to remove, or a mango, any other tree which 1.5 hours to remove (technically half hour if no one waters it)
but you can use corn, cabbage, squash, beans, stack of wood, home marker, stakes in ground, anything that needs to be removed with an item or tool, or takes more time to move it but allows walking over it
wDWZ2zR.png

when to do it?
it cant be early enough, if you got some food going on, you need to gather material for pen, latest is when you run out of natural soil
the eve makes one or more baskets, you will have to make shovel under one hour and dig those stumps out or they get lost
lSjLWSB.png
if you make a basket from reed, you get 2 adobe
if you make 4 baskets, you will have 8 adobe
if you make 4 reed with clay and dig out the 4 stumps you get 8 more adobe
you need shovel to use up the reed stumps, you can do it with clay and straw but takes longer, making 16 with clay and reed just wasting the stumps if you don't dig out
you can use stakes to make half adobe walls instead of adobe bases in hopes of people gathering more and making proper walls later, this can also be made more permanent, using plaster on them

other option is to dig out 8 stone, cut in half with chisel and mallet, and cut each half again with chisel, this results in 16 bell bases for a 3x3 pen

you need carrot, or wild carrot for sheep food, bowl of berry
10 milkweed, 4 for bow, 2 for arrow and extra rope to carry sheep home

3x3 is enough, don't make 4 corner entrances, make 2 on the side of city, and just keep other two facing some empty space normal corner so others can expand it later, an optimal size would be 5x5 inner size (24 walls) or 7x7(32 walls) two front entrances (extra 2 wall each)
rather get sheep than build a huge pen, its confusing later on that if someone plans to get sheep or not and people might make multiple bows

take bow,  arrow, rope in pen, and a food
shoot a wild muflon, carry home the lamb, and feed it
make shears, spindle and knitting needles

plant wheat and start composting

later on you can replace walls with chests, its better to hold meat, lambs and bones, a front entrance made from 4 chest and one oven is also pretty good to cook excess mutton
don't convert corners to oven it just makes it hard to expand, build a new one close by,  with free space around it the time saved on taking mutton pays off fast, no problem having second oven

you can plant extra berry plantation just for sheep feeding and some compost to keep it up
wheat field can be near pen, but carry straw where you want the soil, aka near berry field, don't just make all soil in one place and expect people use baskets and take faraway to other corner of city, put on each side of the berry field a compost
don't leave straw on the open, use up if you take apart from threshed wheat
extra baskets are always useful, and with the backlog on the soil, you will have a lot of extra wheat, also pretty cheap to make hats for everyone, this makes bread an ideal food to clean up all those wheat with lower plate usage

other animals: works with other animals too
goose pen: if you make a new pen you can use old one for breeding goose, you need to put eggs in dung to get a goose, you can store goose in box and carts, and behead them using 2 stumps and axe (animation takes long, you can kill the next in meantime)
eventually stumps decay and disappear so plant trees for firewood and stumps (pine to signal the purpose)

pigs: pigs are kind of useless in current state, hard to clean up pig meat, leads to dog domestication, generally doesn't worth to make it, but if you want to try out, make a pen far away from city, don't mix with sheep
also the first piglet is still deadly when grown up, other than using as a medical pig (the last injury matters so if bit by snake and you run into boar, you can be cured with pads and needle) or easy suicide for babies, so if its not your goal, feed the small boar where you shoot it and only take the pink pig home

cow: you don't need 10 cows, or cow pen as you can not eat beef, so make 1x2 pen for bison and cow, or feed bison in a tiny biome (tried on an 1x2 desert and the bison never left it
once you lure a cow into 1x2 pen it cannot produce calfs so wont overrun city with cows, still gives milk
you can shoot bison and poison other cows with a mango leaf

bear, wold puppies? bad idea mostly roleplay

dogs, would make sense to keep them locked, but people will take puppies around and its just a mess

pens keep animals out not just in, so you are safe inside during bear attack
actually you can build rooms in pen style with front entrance so it can be open and blocks animals

grave pens:
with high child mortality and nearby badland/desert its often fastest to build a pen using graves
to make it more sturdy use U letters to fix it down, Uncle pens can be destroyed by shovels but destroys shovel too so they cannot take all down

for consistency use one type of material and fix it with that material if its broken
and dotn take away resources, someone spent a life to make it viable, honor their efforts
try to use different styles for pens, makes it more memorable for people, is one of the most important structures in any city, put your style to it, the 5 min you save on corner entrance isnt worth in long term, be creative with berries and walls

now with the jungle, the warmth is very good, with clothes especially close to balanced

mosquitos arent that bad, but you can make rooms to keep them out, with pen entrance instead of doors, or one directional door which allows baby machines locked out from kiln area

Sugar pen!

cost: 1 sugar cane per 4 walls, 2 soil per wall plus 2 per entrance, axe ,skewers/hoe. location: soil and water, 2 ponds and 2 soil pits, closeby jungle
3x3: needs 16 walls- 4 sugar canes, 2-3 skewers, 16+4 water, 32+8 bowls of soil (14 basket)
4x4: needs 20 walls- 5 sugar canes, 3-4 skewers, 20+4 water, 40+8 bowls of soil (16 basket)
5x5: needs 24 walls- 6 sugar canes, 4-5 skewers, 24+4 water, 48+8 bowls of soil (19 basket)

it's quite fast, faster than getting adobe, grows in 4 minutes
you can make only one entrance, just keep some space on all sides
then build around it with stone/fence/adobe/plant trees
that's why corner enrances are bad, building around corner entrances will block the entrance
i suggest a front entrance top and boxes on bottom (you can move boxes by converting to sledge, move, then cut down shaft with adze

very griefeable, all they need is a sharp stone and cut multiple
medium accident proof, generally no reason to bring flint or sharp stone inside, maybe killing sheep and misclicking cuts it

4 minute to fix it back to original state, planting back one of the stalks, 3 adobe to temporarily block all exits

i would advise making boxes around it or adobe walls starting from the entrance
the entrance should be facing the city, possibly plant it on top side of town

conclusion: it's a cheap pen which uses the axe and hoe rather then the shovel, and it's faster if you got bucket already
it's quite fancy and it works
i would suggest replacing it then making pig, dog pens or rooms
even wolf pens

if you water one you get back 4 stalks, then you can replant them to make it even faster, so generally you can do it with one single sugar cane

I like this a lot.
Might be a good endaveor to kickstart wolf pens.
I used to slave them out with roses.

Re: How to make a livestock pen 3

yeah, a lot more simple than roses
i had the problem with roses that you need to water them, pick them off, stratify again, all those roses take up tiles and time, then you get 1 more rose seed for all the efforts, 2 snow banks and 12 seeds then you can make the rest of 4 to make a 3x3 pen, but it's a lot of hassle

meanwhile sugarcane just plant some and if you cut it you get 4 seeds for it
if people want to ruin a bell base or adobe pen they can do it, sure this can be cut down entirely fast, but then again you can dig up a pen or use a bucket or pond to water adobe

and it's certainly faster than stone pens

one thing: plant corn on corners, it sticks out a bit, not like berry, it leaves hardened row which is good enough
and it can be dug up when extending it

Re: How to make a livestock pen 3

A little after 6:25:00 on here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/403109058 you can see another livestock pen design.  The pens come as a tree and box design.  My more refined idea lay in using boxes for the bottoms and corners, poplars for the sides, and maples for the top of the pen, since poplars leave more side to side visibility than maples.  Yes, it takes a while for the trees to grow.  But I like it, and branches in good spots have their uses.  And so do boxes on the bottom of pens, if you more often than not walk upwards towards them.

Re: How to make a livestock pen 3

I think simply the 'bush' aesthetic is enough for me. Even though rose pens are absolutely gorgeous i had to employ my daughter Rose to finish one small one beside the kitchen because I decided to make it too late in my life.

You betcha I was happy when I saw my daughter's last words were "This is Rose, our milk cow."

Next time I'm trying this and turning it into a pooch pen.

Re: How to make a livestock pen 3

yeah i suggested long ago to plant pines as a pen, then even you can extend it by planting around it and top stumps function as goose decap
just the bottom should be stonebase or boxes or fences, not really viable in public server

someone planted 3 trees in radish town, i cut two for fast goose beheading, and someone cut the third for no reason, that was good to restart a fire, maybe they did it for firewood
you might plant it before 29 so you can water it at 59, but then still 1 hour to grow, sure the stumps are there 1 more hour if they cut it

it was quite effective to keep up fire in s12 as i was coming back for hours so i just planted pine and cut the old ones, and cart making was near it

people not really managing  the newcommen wells, they rather upgrade other wells than to gather kindling
in first radish town i went out to south forest with a cart and baskets, i cut tons of branches into kindling and took back like 15 of them
now with pack apron and pie, upgraded cart and a hatchet you can get 21 kindling which is quite good for smiting and water production
every time people cut firewood to kindling it breaks my heart

Domesticating, raising and gathering animals has some benefit, while some are necessary like sheep and horse to make your city viable, and some are optional like cow pig goose wolfs dogs

To make a pen, you need to use items that Block walking, these are referred as "walls"
These can be natural items or man made

The natural ones are:
any tree - blocks walking until cut, stumps also blcok walking but decay in 1 hour
pond- not upgradeable anymore, but they block walking even if empty, they don't look good, but it works if you see more in one line
hot spring- quite rare to use
monolith-rare o use, but looks good as a corner
cactus- can be common but would make a hot on desert, you can use them as a corner maybe
rabbit hole- it's quite weird to use them in a wall
iron vein, mine, colllapsed iron mine- quite rare
oil drilling tube in tarry spot-quite rare, also in ice or desert
nosaj- quite rare. also in jungle, once i had 2 diagonally serving as corners for a 4x4 pen
natural spring- upgrading into wells, makes no sense to make pen right near

Man made items:
adobe base, oven, kiln- adobe base cost 1 adobe, looks bad but wont decay
adobe half wall, full wall- contrary to popular belief, half wall wont decay and cost the same as an adobe base, can be upgraded to full wall, then it decays
stone wall-generally used for buildings not pens
bell tower base- can be a good option near desert/badlands, just count the big stones around you
fence- you need a lot of shafts for tools, for fences so probably only after you plant mapples
small and big sign- cost rope so is hard to use them as a pen, maybe a corner
cistern- undestroyable until has water in it, can be hard to gather so many to make a full pen
newcommen foundation- can be undone and blocks to right, cancels diagonal entrances
unpowered crude car- expensive, maybe for a corner
loom- expensive until you got planted trees (2 wire, 8 shafts, reed), if you already got one loom, then you can have some copper, and make a few
they cant be moved or destroyed so are as strong as ancient walls
distiller- moveable, but expensive, maybe for a corner
grave, marked grave- if not marked, they will steal the stones to make road or tortilla

some weird oens that block walking, at least for a while:

end tower base -it's same as newcommen, expensive and will get destroyed
springy door- doesn't close fast enough to keep the sheep in, same as airlocks, wont hold the mouflon in forever
ice hole- moves sometimes
skinned dead bear, clubbed seal- stays there for an hour
snake bit horse and tipped cart
bear cave- too weird to build around it
snowman- melts in a bit
thrash pit- after 5 minutes will allow movement, disappears when no stakes on it

the last change is property fences
advantages:
-cheap, only cost one straight branch
-can cover a lot of territory fast
-fast to build, after setting , 3 minutes can be made into a wall
-fast to get sheep and horse
-good to contain other animals which normally wont worth making a pen

disadvantages:
-lot of people got no skill and still making them
-decays in 2 hours
-people wont make a "proper one" as is harder to make a same size using resources
-needs to be fixed each hour and cant be removed until decays fully
-generally lets all animals out when people die out of a camp so the next eve/eplorer finds a mess and kids gonna suicide a lot
-they look bad and arent fully secure cause decay

First fences decayed in one hour and that allowed to use them as a temporary inner or outer wall and build around it or inside it
my idea was to build a small 2x3 with a front entrance, or a 3x3 with a diagonal stripe of berry bushes, build from real materials aroudn it then when i die, in a few minutes decays
now that is quite unviable as it will stay 2 hours there so i cant really communicate my intentions, and making it for a placeholder wont make sense
as it will be forgotten once im dead

big or small?
i would advise a small one, one entrance, out of town, and start a proper  bigger using normal fences, planting some mapples to do it over time
big ones can function well, but you don't rely on a huge production up until the population gets bigger, the berry fields get bigger, you got loom, shears and free time to make clothes
also is overall bad looking in the middle of the camp when your town grows into a massive city
