Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

Yesterday, after reading this, I thought "I think I'll go off the rails like Futurebird."  So I logged in with the intent of being a griefer.  Was born into an established town with remarkably few private areas.  There should have had a lot of players for the time of the day I was playing in, but I found myself one of the few kids.  By the time I was independent, I could tell the town was already in significant decline.  Carrots that had been left to go to seed.  Lots of decayed or abandoned buildings.  Huge areas of random clutter.

In the end I came to the conclusion that by simply not doing all the typical things that I would normally do: make the compost, prep the meals, fetch the kindling, etc.  Would make me more of a griefer than killing the last sheep, depleting the wheat, or some random killings.

I can say that I honestly don't get how some players prefer to wreck a town rather than renew it.

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

The logic of this forum is:

Eliminate the murder! we want our families to live many generations !!!
but then they use the / die command continuously when they do not like a city or early settlement ....
the same ones who are scandalized by griefers and murderers, use the / die command and justify it !!

I'm with Jason ... people do not know what he wants

I don't see what's wrong with this logic.
The underlying philosophy can be boiled down to "join me in helping build and sustain this civilization, or don't".
/die is part of that while griefing is not.

They're obviously two very different things.
With /die you simply choose not to contribute to the town, but when you grief it however, you completely go against what everyone stands for and oppose the town.
That's very different if you ask me.

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

Empty spaces, what are we living for?
Demolished places, I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are playing for?
Another griefer, another mindless crime
Behind the keyboard, in the OHOL land
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore?

We must game on...

You should analyze why lineages are extinguished in OHOL ...
The murders are not the culprits of exterminating entire lineages ...

have you been born lately as EVE? ... have you been born lately in an early camp?
Try it and you will notice that the / die are exaggeratedly high!
In the big cities, the same thing happens, but it is not as noticeable as there are more people and it always gives the feeling that this problem does not exist ... but there it is.

look at the family tree of any family ... do the favor ...
and consider the amount of / die ... count them and make the proportion of people who are born and people who decide to stay in that family

I still don't think using the /die command is comparable to griefing.

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

to a murderer, he can arrest him on a property fence, he can curse him and he can kill him ...
with a griefer you can do the same ...

if all the babies of his lineage use the / die ... he can not do anything
do not even curse them ...

he's right ... it's not comparable ... it's much worse because his lineage will be extinguished whatever he does ...
fustracion ?? ... can not do anything ...
just learn to play with this ...

I agree with Léonard here.

People use /die to get a say in what town to spend the next hour.
It is an expression of wanting to have a free choice.

It sucks, but it could be fixed by implementing some sort of choice system in the login menu. Perhaps it would be enough to choose generation (0-5 or above).

Griefing on the other hand is an expression of malicious intent.
If we take away murder, they will lure in bears. If we take away killer bears, they will hide all the food. Where does one even begin to find a solution to that problem..?
Griefing can't be 'fixed' the way /die-babies can be fixed, but maybe it can be limited.

I don't /die, and I don't grief, but I can respect /die-babies.
I can't respect griefers.

/die does NOT put a mom on womb cooldown.  In fact, it resets it.  So, as soon as the child uses /die, she can have another child.  Additionally, I have seen murders as the culprits of entire lineages.  Saw a Milk family die out in generation 5 after a small handful of women, and a girl, got murdered.

I agree with Leonard.  Additionally, if people joined and didn't want to play that spot, they could just stand there and do nothing.

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

I know the operation of / die the problem is that it is used as a method to travel to another city more to the player's liking, and it is abused to such an extent that the cities and camps must survive with 1 or 2 women at the most! It does not matter if you have many children if they all end up committing suicide ... You only need to see the family tree ...

Also, I don't think you quite understand my point here.

Reality is about the balance between chaos and order.  Maintaining order is something to strive for, and gives life meaning.

Without the threat of at least some chaos, ....

great

so, where is the ORDER in OHOL again ?

all i see is chaos

if i try to bring in some order, then more often than not players don't even know why i am removing a berry bush & they just put soil on every brown, no matter what ...

where are the options to create order in oHOL ????

that one stack of carrots ???

? ? ? W H E R E ? ? ?

Good point

"The second law of thermodynamics can be stated in terms of entropy. If a reversible process occurs, there is no net change in entropy. In an irreversible process, entropy always increases, so the change in entropy is positive." (According to Google anyways)

So as long as there are irreversible processes in OHOL, meaning there's something that can't be undone, then there will always be more chaos created. No griefers necessary.

(But don't take my word for it, I'm not a student of physics :-o )

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

@futurebird

you go girl !

i would have long started griefing if it was only remotely fun for me personally
it isn't
i am a creative person, i like to create, i like structure, not destruction

all i ever said about griefing in OHOL is
that it is more fun to grief in OHOL than it is to be constructive
constructivity in OHOL ends up inevitably in frustration
because the game lacks any !!! appreciation for being constructive

even if i admire Jason for taking up on that task to make & manage a multiplayer game alone
i still see the glaring flaws in that game

costructivity is fucked in OHOL
destruction rules
that's why griefers thrive best
constructive people are the idiots in OHOL

i support griefing in OHOL not because i think that order needs chaos
but to bring the game down, to where it belongs
to the realisation that there has to be order in the first place to allow some chaos afterwards, to not get stuck & stale
but OHOL has no order
only chaos rules, griefers rule

What kind of appreciation for being constructive could be built into the game?

Re: Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one

From Op's and jason's posts....

im pissed...I hate greifing in this game, havoc and chaos for me here isn't fun for me (honestly im just still trying to get the damn basics down)  first off it's because of troll'y ass people that are popping up in every life I've had past 4 hours and most of them i have lived hour lives here.... it's just annoying as fuck seeing everyone get systematically wiped that barely knew how to play, in these last playthoughs its been me and new players and me teaching them on top of an entire village of people struggling to farm and cook and just barely getting smithing going just to be killed is super annoying and feels like the more fitness I get the more i'm experiencing these greifers.... like I just want to be isolated with a village of like minded people that just want to advance in this dam game. is that at all possible?

Try playing on a low population server. Its a lot like that. Most people are working on their towns solo but im sure they would welcome the help and could teach you a lot of stuff. You can also work on your own town and work your way through the tech tree. Its really nice and zen compared to the main server. No biome restrictions and no tool slot limits when the population is less than 15.

what?? I came here expecting a Spoony necro /shock
Unfortunately griefers are in a big comeback since we are forced to play togheter because of the *specialization* thing (note that there is nothing really special about it). In a low pop server you can pretty much learn all the game without interruption and if you get some help it can be quite enjoyable.

That's a dumb as fuck argument. You're just continuing a circle of hate. Rise above and be a better person.

Plus griefers have small pps

So you know Johtolink, the original poster hasn't posted on the forums since the beginning of July.  So, I wouldn't feel surprised if she never reads this.  But, you do you.

I like griefers if there aren’t too many,
adds an aspect to the game and it’s fun to execute them and adds a few jobs.

Uh, do we know that's why futurebird stopped playing?  Might be right, but how do we know?
