Or maybe it shouldn't be usernames, but a counter. It will simply count how many people a player killed during his whole game experience, then show numbers, when you click on person. That will greatly help, if a griefer spawns as baby, and mother can just abandon him, but if a griefers spawns eve, then more probably other players are still doomed.

Make a sacrifice at the temple to be granted protection from reprisal before you go on your murder spree.

That would be more than often in the beginning, of course. But this is the reason the protection should cease as soon as a person kills someone. As soon as he loses it, any other person can kill him. This lessens harm murderer can do. Not to mention that in advanced villages at some point it would become more than normal to obtain protection asap, preventing any chances to be killed, because even if a person with protection tries to kill smb with protection, logically nothing will hapen.

Where are those griefiers coming from? If two weeks ago, I assume, it was just people intentionally having their "fun", now when it skyrocketed, I'm pretty much sure those are the people who got greatly disatisfied by game unfairness (be that children abandoning, griefing or carrot grinding in villages where, as it sometimes feels, noone knows to talk) and now are having "fun" the way they do, because non other way contents them no more.

I like this idea, quite a bit.

Probably the best solution for mass murder griefing I have seen. I suspect however, that there are many who would argue that adding a "magic" element to the game would go against the purpose and spirit of what Jason has created. Still, I think it needs to be considered.

Actually, I did not considered it to be "magic", hmm... I guess, you right, that some would argue. As for me, this whole idol thing is a beginning of religion among us, primitive tribes. It's just evolution. One small step forward.

as for the magic thing, it is just an addition, solution, salvation! that came to my mind.

It is high time we savages learn to make idols and to worship them so that High Queen of Carrots, Lady of Farming and First Mother could descend upon us to give us a protection against mean griefiers and prevent mass murder!

The ideas is to add altars in the game, which would grant protection from being murdered.
How I imagine it working:
one builds the altar
sacrifices something
gets the blessing
and that blessing don't allow other players to kill this particular person.

The blessing can be life-long. However once the blessed player murders somebody, he or she loses the blessing at once. That would let advanced civs to get protection for all its members and stop mass murder of the whole village.

though, i doubt  that the altars should be easy to obtain. Maybe one will need a gold crown to build one, like dug big rock+gold crown, for example.
