excellent! i'll work more on this later, thanks so much for your help! after the linux guide seemed broken, I followed [as best as i can] palisades's guide to compiling in windows, and i got stuck on the step:
In gameSource/Makefile find COMPILE_FLAGS and append (with a preceding space): -I/usr/include -L/usr/lib

My problem is, it's unclear where gameSource/Makefile is (or what to use to find it), and how do i append it?

I am. This makes sense, but all the linux options for setting up the virtual machine are 32 bit, and there is no option for 64 bit. for operating system i choose linux, but then for version everything is 32 bit. now i'm noticing the top one just says linux2[point]2 . all the others say 32 bit. should i be using that one?

I quoted the wrong person, i thought he was the guy that posted the guide. i was on this step

Set up Ubuntu in VirtualBox on Windows

Step 1.5 This way you should have your machine ready to boot. Start it up!
You should be welcomed with Ubuntu instalation process. Choose instalation (not trial).
------------------------------------------------------------
at this point the oracle VM virtualbox just crashes. i had selected a language, selected install, then black screen and crash window.

Well in my case, I don't use a VM image. It is just a few tools and the checked out source code. There's no point in me providing you a ready to go bundled "system" because it would have to be reconfigured each time something changes (tools update, libraries change, even jason's OHOL changes). It is better that you set up your own development environment and learn to compile. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime. As long as you follow the instructions, it will compile.

BUT when i select install ubuntu, my virtual box crashes and i can't fix it. did every step, started over several times, even changed a few things to try different stuff. everytime the meditation guru holds me back sad

official client. is there an alternative client i could use just for connecting to my server?

They function properly, but wolves look like hatchets too. the server is running on a Virtual linux box. I'm connecting to the server with windows on the same computer, but using the instanced linux to run the server.  i suppose i'll delete the cache for the server and the client and just restart both.

I can't find the Cache files to delete to keep the gooseberry bushes from turning into other things when u pick them. These are on the server's  files, right? do you know which folder you can find them in? i don't see where the data folders are (or which data folder you mean).

THANKS!!! You guys are doing great work, this is my first time doing a virtual box, and i got everything working with minimal hiccups.
